this is the clearest transfer from the 8mm footage i've ever seen. where did you get this? I have bought many copies of this footage and they are all remarkably poor quality, even worse than this.
the kwoon kuet of wing chun is being lost. now, instead of emphasizing on the use of body, new practitioners use brute strength which is NOT a principle of wing chun.
Timing is what wing chun is all about. You're right on this one. If you don't time your moves perfectly with your opponent and you get ahead of him/her they will see it coming and change moves before you can successfully counter their first move. Speed can only help you so much, timing is everything.
@DuykRuyk How am I a racist? I didn't say i have anything against Mexicans did I?? Besides, YOU made a stereotypical comment about lawnmowing i believe???
@paddotk I didn't say he was Mexican, you did. That assumption makes you a racist, you racist asshole. You seriously need to take some tolerance classes. I merely said that he sounds like the person who mowed my lawn last year.
@DuykRuyk =>which is using a stereotype. And again, i don't have anything against Mexicans, I'm just saying this Miguel Hernandez most likely is. So shut the hell up and don't post such dumb comments birdbrain.
@numberonepal ving tsun is somewhat different than the mainstream wing chun. It's wing chun with a few differences. So it's definately not americanized spelling.
if u look closely, siu lim tao has lots of wrist turning strokes. The purpose of this pattern is to free yourself in case your wrist is grappled. This is extremely practical in real fight. wing chun teaches anything but bullshit. It does not encompass high kicks because they are really ineffective in real fight.
funny thing just happened: this vid got stuck but i was listening to 'boom boom pow' and where will i am drops the beat the video started again and sped thru about 30 seconds in 3 secs and it lookd awesome
A tan sau from ip man or bruce lee (just look at the size difference) would NOT stop a head hook from Tyson. Tysons; ability to withstand a punch is so much better too. These kind of debates will go on and on and i think respect should be given to all martial arts.... watch Rio cage fighting..it's the real McCOY and you can see Martial arts for what they really are..none of this choreographed movie bullshite
i really dont see how people can compare cage fighting with self defense martial arts or mixed martial arts, there totally different, cage fighting, ufc, strikeforce pride etc, etc all have rules applied with them. it doesnt matter how minimal the rules are, there still rules that have to be abided too. wing chun or any self defence mma doesnt have these restrictions, hench mike tyson v any good self defense practioner becomes a no contest, tyson is in hospital having a tracioctomy
Rio Cage fighting IS MMA and doesn't have any rules - except don't kill, i think? tyson without gloves is as much likely to kill with a series of punches as a Martial artist. It's all about the power of the punch. And the 2 inch punch, i think, is a gimmick - its just pushing someone off balance from their centreline. Gauging eyes and twisting bones we can all do that. Respect
u r correct in that yiu think, and dead wrong that it's a gimmick, it for your information doesn't push you off balance: I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I'M TELLING YOU; THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS, TAKE A BOWL AND DROP IN A SMALL KIDNEY BEAN OR A PENNY/ AMD SEE HOW THE WATER PULSES OUTWARD INTO WAVES; THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR TORSO IN FULL'. ; rare i even say anything but u sound like you wanted an answer. enjoy.
In Wing Chun size doesn't matter Wing Chun is not about fighting forcevforce Its a wise art designed for smaller practitioners to beat larger foes See history of Wing Chun Real martial arts isnt choreographed and often looks ugly The concept of true power lies is speed Bruce Lee was mad fast Maximizing damage is in the equation of Pe(t,l,f)> E(sigma) (Pet +Pel+Pef) this says faster more accurate and frequent punches do more damage not the stronger you punch the more damage you do, this is TWC
UUUaaaaahahahahaaaa, don´t you know that this man has trained Bruce Lee and with 96 years he kicked him through each corner of the studio...think ...know and then talk
My lineage of sui nim tao is from ip chun, and one thing i have noticed about other w.c styles is when they go into fook sau, instead of pushing straight back out, they drop the forearm and raise it....why is this?
the difference between chinese martial arts and karate style is karate hits "at"the opponent chinese martial arts punches through the opponent.Win-Chun is based on the "rolling theory"and the extension of one"s first!!
sifu yip man would seriously injure mike tyson before he even knew what has happened. The fact that tyson throws punches with the shoulder and being very tense makes him an easy target even for a 79 yr old man
listen you naive plonka - the more weight + speed + accuracy (and tyson had them all) will cause more damage and will eventually penetrate any good defence. Kung fu helps and is good too know,( i do practice MMA), but please, remember that kung fu doesn't make you invincible like they show in the movies
no martial art of training makes you invincible they just give you an advantage.
I've practiced wing chun and other martial arts for alot of years.
As brilliant as yip man was there's a reason for weight categories in fighting...I think it would take a miracle for a 9st man to beat somebody in peak physical condition weighin in at near twice that.
ip man vs tyson in a boxing match would of course be no contest.
outside a ring tyson may get a shattered knee or loose an eye.

With all due respect... I wonder what would happen to this man if he was to face Mike Tyson? Will all these slow and clumsy moves be of any help? And even before somebody posts a comment in this man's defense, please remember that I am talking about MIKE TYSON. His reactions to punches were less than a quaeter of a second.
at yip mans old age in this video he wouldve been pummeled, but thats no suprise.
In yip man's prime, im not too sure...yip man wouldnt win hands alone. I reckon tyson would win, yip man wouldnt have come across such explosive, powerful punches. Although tyson wouldnt be prepared to take on kicks to the knee, inside of theigh, groin, finger to the throat, etc. so im not too sure. Yip wouldve been perhaps faster than mike tyson.
Perhaps it's about the style, not too much about the person. In Yip's world there's no rules but to damage the opponent, of course, Yip won't bite his opponent's ear off. Guess we should give Mike this round hand's off for being like a canine than a martial artist.
This is just a basic form taught primarily to establish the concept of the centerline. Wing Chun in actual practice is probably one of the fastest martial arts in existance. I've seen wing chun practicioners be able to get 4-5 punches in the same time as a boxer's punch. The secret is using the center as opposed to the shoulder to deliver the punch. Yip Man was a legend in Wing Chun and among other things Bruce Lee's primary teacher. In his heyday Yip was definately faster than Tyson.
@Seankwondo87 There is always something I didn't understand about wing chun. The centerline. I hear that if the opponent attacks you, and you dodge, it means your centerline is away from your opponents. < I don't understand what that means. Is the centerline a straight line that is running down the middle of your body or is it the distance between you and the opponents?
@Iraqendwar In the center of your body is where most of your fatal parts are. Also when they attack the center-line the impact is taken more directly, whereas if you hit one side, your body may shift due to the force and some of the impact will be lost. Yes, the center-line is the line running down in the center of your body which cuts your body in half symmetrically.
@Seankwondo87 And actually to add on to that. Siu Lim Tao is develops punching strength, speed, and accuracy. Although in this video Yip Man seems extremely relaxed, his muscles are working very hard to maintain his power level at a high degree. With that he is able to work against his own muscles with every movement, like visualizing he is pushing a block of unmovable concrete with every block. With this training we know Yip Man to be one powerful dude.

Pleas enlighten us on what fighting style it is exactally you know that is so above the other martial arts of the world that you keep sprouting shit out of your mouth. Too many people are adding bits to the form that doesnt need adding. Study the form correctly and you will find out so much more about it than the obvious moves you see.

Thankyou very much! GrandMaster Ip Man. Many thanks for your great contribution to the Martial Art's world. We will absorb all the basic concept and methods that you showed to us. I hope I can find my MArt's road and make contribution as what you had done. Salute!!!
let me just ask: Is there ANYONE doing wing chun out there watching this video that does NOT do it the Yip Man style? Give me a shout just wanna find you out there.
that isnt bruce, this was taken a couple of weeks before yip man died. he got the idea from bruce tho. lee wanted to film him so he could take it back to the usa to study. but yip man rufused. it wasnt till his near death he decided to record himself to demonstrate the proper technique so it would never be lost in the future generations
Do you know what a source is? I need a link or a name of a book or movie. I don't need further claims. "READ ALL 4 ARTICLES ITS IN THERE d00DS" What fucking articles are you talking about???
yea yip man is the best n everythin but it looks sped up when u see the guy walking back who cud be bruce going to get something to eat "
nonsense !! Bruce Lee was still filming Game Of Death on the few weeks before Yip Man is going to pass away . Sadly Bruce Lee died a year later ,,,,,,,,
Yup, 8mm was commonly shot in 17fps for amateur footage and 24 fps for "professional" (some cameras had settings for both). Either one of those settings played back at 30 fps for youtube (or the VHS transfer this looked to come from), would appear sped up.
You're right it does look sped up and you wouldn't see it if it wasn't for Bruce going to get a snack :-P Thing is there's no point in speeding it up because speed in SNT doesn't equal skill, it must be a glitch in the 8 mm film or something
im under the impresion its something to do with the fact its a film taken on and old digital camra of the original 8mm footage beeing projected? hence the lose of quality two. The cleaned up version Ip Chun and Ip Ching have is much slower.
I do this when I get up in the morning (its part of my workout) and once at night. This includes all the basic forms for Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do. I have JKD practice 4 times a week and every time we start the training with this. So so so important, yet so simple.
Yip Man passed away in 1972 but just a few weeks before he died, he made sure the various forms of Wing Chun were recorded on 8mm film in order to preserve the pure Wing Chun system. Yip man was very weak during the shooting and had to rest between shots. Ip Chun sold the one and only 8mm of his father to Leung Ting in 1980's for less than $10,000 US. Ip Ching received $0.00 from the sale of his father's 8mm. Today, Leung Ting is the copyright owner of Yip Man's only existing 8mm.
One time at Yip Man Hall in Fat Shan I asked Master Ip Chun why he gave the Hall all the Grandmaster's stuff. He said he gave them for free and he wanted all the WC followers in the world have the chance to share the collections of GM. That's why you can watch GM's video there and many precious things of Grandmaster IP MAN. I DON'T BELIEVE YOUR "STORY". And for Leung Ting, every WC follower (Grandmaster Ip Man's lineage) knows about him, I really have no comment on him !!
Just as flowing water will wear away a stone!True power is developed threw movement!

Wing Chun is an Americanized spelling of

passed it to his sons and several other
disciples, but the man with the entire knowledge
of the system today is Miguel Hernandez.

that isnt bruce, this was taken a couple of weeks before yip man died. he got the idea from bruce tho. lee wanted to film him so he could take it back to the usa to study. but yip man rufused. it wasnt till his near death he decided to record himself to demonstrate the proper technique so it would never be lost in the future generations

yea yip man is the best n everythin but it looks sped up when u see the guy walking back who cud be bruce going to get something to eat "
nonsense !! Bruce Lee was still filming Game Of Death on the few weeks before Yip Man is going to pass away . Sadly Bruce Lee died a year later ,,,,,,,,
tokyomusicdreamer 4 years ago
Old films are like that. Their timings are a little off. Its sped up a little bit.
shicack 4 years ago
Yup, 8mm was commonly shot in 17fps for amateur footage and 24 fps for "professional" (some cameras had settings for both). Either one of those settings played back at 30 fps for youtube (or the VHS transfer this looked to come from), would appear sped up.

hahaha... yeah, bruce was hungry...

You're right it does look sped up and you wouldn't see it if it wasn't for Bruce going to get a snack :-P Thing is there's no point in speeding it up because speed in SNT doesn't equal skill, it must be a glitch in the 8 mm film or something
schindlerax 4 years ago
It is sped up.
im under the impresion its something to do with the fact its a film taken on and old digital camra of the original 8mm footage beeing projected? hence the lose of quality two.

It would be a bit different if you're not GM IP MAN's lineage because there are quite a few different WC branches.
ac338 4 years ago
