Nalbandian is the only one who can force Federer to play this level. Djokovic and Nadal have beaten Federer a lot of times but Federer never looked that helpless against them as he does vs Nalbandian at some points. Nalbandian is the UNDERACHIEVER of this era. People will say whatever they want about the "best matches of the decade" but these people are normally the ones who only watch matches involving the top 5. Here's some matches not involving Federer with quality of the highest order: Sanguinetti vs Scrichaphan 2005 US Open, Santoro vs Blake 2007 US Open, Ferrero vs Gonzalez 2003 Roland Garros, Agassi Coria 2003 Roland Garros, Verkerk vs. Coria 2003 Roland Garros, Safin vs Kuerten Hamburg 2000, Henman vs Roddick 2003 Bercy...could go on and on.
This was one lucky tournament for Nalbandian. Didn't qualify. Hewitt, Safin, Agassi, Roddick and Nadal all out. If all of those guys were fit it would have been a TMC to remember.
I believe that Fed fans AND Fed himself sometimes had some serious stomacheissues before he had to enter the court with Nalbandian in the other end, this guy was sometimes a MONSTER against Fed especially! Btw, does anyone know what this "Meh" sound Nalbandian often says means? A little like Cmon i suppose!
@butterflycaught900 it only seems like they are his best matches cos other players have to play out of their skin to beat him if hes playing well so its always an amazing match if federer loses when he play good. federers actual best matches are where he eaily beats top players when they dont play bad;ly at all and they cant do anything about it becasue he is that good
best analbandian match ever, when he vas 30 0 with that service mi godd o tihouthe was goignt to leave....
tother think im argentino and i know nalbandians tenis life and he hot ana amzing talent but he dont try the encesary for been in the best 3 or 2 players in the world so sad about it
I'm nostalgic about the time when players like Nalbandian, Federer, Safin, Hewitt, Agassi... where at their best. They could play incredible matches.
For me this match and Federer/Safin at AO 05 where two of the greatest matches ever, (way above Federer/Nadal 's confrontations). At that time Federer was at his prime, so seing Federer lose was always a match in which both player played an unbelievable level
I don't remember which Tennis legend said it about Nalbandian but I believe the quote was something like "the greatest talent I've ever seen wasted in a player".
nope thats just the history of that match. federer needed to get it done quickly but the 1st 2 sets took too long so he had nothing left and faded bad for 2 sets. and at 4-0 down in the 5th he decided to fight just to make it hard for david. this inner strength got him 2 points from the match but as we know. federer has a bad habit of almost winning but not quite finishing it off
i'm sorry but it is just so hard to watch Federer in when his tennis outfit is so awful in this match. awesome match though!! and thanks for the upload!
In my opinion, in terms of shot quality, this was one of the best matches of all time. It was at least top 4 or 5 of the decade along with Wimbledon 08 final, Rome 06 final, and Wimbledon 09 final.
@SSky06 I think that the other not in top 5 but at least in top 10 is Federer vs Davydenko 2009 semi-final in O2 in london :) what do you think ? and again it invovled Federer :D
Yeah, that was a very good match as well. That was another one of those matches where Roger was in control late and just let it slip through his fingers, unfortunately. That running overhead smash off Davydenko's smash was incredible. I'll never forget that shot as long as I live.
@SSky06 true, their matches were similar in quality to fed vs agassi - clean hitting, taking the ball early causing fast rallies and tremendous winners
@SSky06 Add Safin vs Federer 2005 AO SF and Safin vs Agassi 2004 AO SF. Clean hitting doesn't get much better than that. And yes, this was a match of superb quality, even with Federer losing steam and playing kind of poorly in sets 3, 4, and the beginning of set 5. Nalbandian was fantastic though. He knows Roger's game inside out and vice versa. They've been playing against each other since they were juniors, so I guess one should expect fireworks!!!
David Nalbandian is a very good player. He did a great job at the Tennis Masters Cup by reaching the final, and then defeating Federer in a five set Epic Battle. Too bad he was injured for most of the year. I hope he gets a good result at the Australian Open next year. If he could reach the semifinal he'd probably be back in the top twenty.
hands up for nalbandian from a roger fun!this was Rog in his best years thats why i must say well done David!Today Federer can give you many games for free even matches on a day but not back then!So well done Nalbandian!

its a great record nonetheless, but I hope you dont think Federers lost a match in 2 n a half years.. hes simply had an unbeaten record in the masters cup for the past 2 n a half years i believe!
Well you cant blame m3v0t 's frustration, Federers competition has been less than impressive, youre only as good as your competition and your main arch-rival (no.2) and well that speaks for itself tbh
And that excuse of Fed's competition being less than impressive is ridiculous 'cause Roger had to pass over players who had knocked Agassi and Sampras out of tennis. Maybe the Fed's generation is not as good as Agassi and Sampras because Federer always managed to get his best tennis in the right moments to win everything he won!
Federer had to pass Hewitt, Safin, Agassi.. and these 3 players had stole Sampras a few Slams.
Not really... Agassi has all positive records against the so called 'players' Roger had to pass which is such a difficult obstacle right (sarcasm btw) ? Federer was the same age as Safin, Roddick and Hewitt just when Agassi and Sampras were fading and were far away from their prime years, unless you think 2002 was there best years? Fed has played great tennis in some of his GS finals, but its not rly difficult if your calibre of oppenents dont draw a light to him making it so easy for him 2 win.
So by ur point of view Federer wait for Pete and Agassi decline and Hewitt to reach the n.1 spot and then start playing tennis and beat all the records in tennis...
Maybe Federer didnt have the greatest rising in the ranks but he managed to keep regular when he reached the spot.
U cant really compare diferent ages because if u take that barrier out then we gotta say that Rod Laver is the greatest player ever because 2 Golden GS is something that Pete was'nt even close to do!
Are you retarded based on your first paragraph? Its not Federers fault he was a young-gun while Sampras and Agassi were much past their prime. And clearly you are mentally disabled if you cant comprehend any of my posts. Comparing different eras is important to assess the competition level and how the champions went about in achieving these records. I agree, there was a period where Laver was not allowed to play for 6 years, he could have passed both Fed and Pete; bt we all av different opinions
All the intelligence was invented only for you so I couldn't reach some so I'll make u favour and leave you talking alone! Not in the mood to take small shit from this!
Im not providing you any shit, Im belittling you however for not understanding the point of my previous post; its your own fault you are getting emotional about it and decide to walk away from the conversation
So u call some1 retard and u wait people to dont take it emotional!
I tell you something: go fuck yourself! If people do not understand ur point of view maybe u should understand that maybe is ur fault! U ain't any kind of god of the communication!
If u don't have the intelligence to explain something without starting calling names then i feel sorry for you!
There's a lot of better things to do than being part of the frustrated life ur showing to have!
I'm calling you a retard because you didnt understand my post, and whats the point in me arguing with someone who cant even understand what Im trying to analyse? How is it my fault, if my english is perfectly fine to construct basic/complex arguments regarding any kind of issue? Im no god in communication but I certainly can hold my on when it comes to written discussions/arguments. If i dont have the intelligence? Excuse me, who misconstrued my post? You did you asshole...
I can call you mentally disabled if you like, but the fact is based on your posts, english is not your first language so when you start making arguments and construing my posts differently than they are intended, whos fault is that? Frustrated life? Hahaha oh man thats rich, u gotta stop assumin so much, who r u tell me I av a frustrated life; I'm engagin an arguement with another person and you try and put me down by trying 2 refute my post; even though you dont even understand it? Shut up man
Your making it sound Hewitt and Safin were major obstacles for Federer, Safin whenever he was on and consistent, always beat Federer, and Hewitts game played into Feds strengths. They stole Sampras a few slams because Pete was in his reclining years as said before and was already on the verge of retirement. Agassi was 5-10 years younger when he contended for GS's v Sampras (his prime). Are you proud that Federer beat a 35 year old Agassi to win a Grandslam? If you wanna talk, read my description
well done nalbandian, especially after losing 5 games in a row and fed was serving for the match, really thought fed was gonna pull off the escape! what other times has federer lost from 2 sets up cos i cant remember any??
Back in the day they played to 5 sets in finals of ATP tour Master's Series and the Year End Finals. Nadal v. Federer's match at Rome which was probably the greatest match ever played before their Wimbledon match was 5 sets and that's not a slam.
the rome final and also the miami 05 final, these are probably their best 2 matches along with wimbledon 08. i really wish they would bring back 5-set finals its so much better.
I agree. Three set finals are stupid. It eliminates so much of the skill from the game, as well as excitement. It's so hard to beat good players in 5 set matches, but three set matches are simpler if they start slow.
i think nalbandian is one of the best players ever but the problem with him is he cant quite keep up that high level of play in best out of five matches. if all the grandslams were only best out of 3 sets , u would definitely see nalbandian in the finals, but theyre not.
seems like he has a habit of losing all his epics. AO 05, wimby 08, this one. he kicks ass when he thinks he has no chance then he gets in winning position and goes into his shell. happened again against Murray in the 08 masters cup
cause it's synthetic carpet. i don't think that surface is used anymore but it used to be used a lot more. McEnroe won like 50 titles on carpet back in the day.
Nalbandian is too fat and lazy to be consistent. He should have won the US Open in 2003 when the retard New York crowd called his balls out against Roddick in the semis. Roddick having a slam over Nalbandian is a joke.
you say it's a joke that roddick has a slam over nalbandian, but you just said yourself "he's to fat and lazy!" I agree with both tho. he is too fat and lazy but he should have won a slam by now.
@ihateuutube I do agree that it was unfair for the crowd to call the ball in that US Open moment, but there was a moment in this match with an overrule where nalbandian almost wanted to blame the umpire for an ace. Roddick having a slam over nalbandian is not a joke, the only reason why roddick possibly doesn't have five slams is because of federer...........
@Jamus182 I can't say that. I don't if roddick would of won. That's some silly excuses. Nadal has 6 in federer's era, and he is gonna have 7 after sunday. Roddick could of still have 5-6 if he wanted to. He is just a big choker in the finals. He collapse when he see fed and play a one dimensional game.
@Thutmosis7 I wouldnt call roddick an out and out choker, the 2nd set tie break at wimbledon was a bit of a choke. He panics at certain times and plays a silly game sometimes against fed. Nadal has 6 in feds era, mainly becasue of clay, as well as the slower grass courts. of the 03,04,05,06 slam matches he played against fed, only 04 was his real chance of winning, so personally I wouldnt call him an out and out choker, but I see your point...
@Thutmosis7 ....I was just a bit dissapointed in the guys reaction to 'roddick having a slam over nalbandian'. He works damn hard to be where he is at today, and if nalbandian had even a little of roddicks determination, which still is something that is difficult to teach, he would be consitantly in contention of the slams, but he doesn't, so isnt
That is so true...Roddick had a real string of 'bad luck' to consistently have to meet Fed in the finals. He would definitely have had more slams otherwise...
@ihateuutube .......... Nalbandian had all the talant in the world and simply didn't use it, so its not a joke for andy to get a slam as although he isnt as talanted as a federer, nalbandian or safin, he works dam hard to put himself in contention in every match that he plays, which is more deserving of a major than anything nalbandian could ever do...........
@Jamus182 i agree. Nalbandian could be a number 3 perhaps now, but he didn't worked as hard as Rodick's did. I think Andy deserves a second slam and David deserves it too. and i'm from Argentina. David is a legend here! He's better than Del Potro, Gaudio and Coria, but he has to improve his tennis so he can easily win a g. slam. IMO.
@ihateuutube ........I'm not dissing nalbandian, i love watching him play, but the comment 'Roddick having a slam over nalbandian is a joke' , is one of the most disrespectful comments iv read. Tennis over five sets rarely lies
Yeah it is. Federer and Nalbandian trading games and breaks back and forth first two sets, Federer then goes up 2 sets to love, then all of a sudden Nalbandian is 2 games away from the win, and then Federer comes back and has a chance to serve the match out and then ends up losing. Great match by both players however.
damn...I wish Nalby could still play like this. Still a beautiful player to watch but his days are over.

So by ur point of view Federer wait for Pete and Agassi decline and Hewitt to reach the n.1 spot and then start playing tennis and beat all the records in tennis...
Maybe Federer didnt have the greatest rising in the ranks but he managed to keep regular when he reached the spot.
U cant really compare diferent ages because if u take that barrier out then we gotta say that Rod Laver is the greatest player ever because 2 Golden GS is something that Pete was'nt even close to do!
fmvgomes 2 years ago
Are you retarded based on your first paragraph? Its not Federers fault he was a young-gun while Sampras and Agassi were much past their prime. And clearly you are mentally disabled if you cant comprehend any of my posts. Comparing different eras is important to assess the competition level and how the champions went about in achieving these records. I agree, there was a period where Laver was not allowed to play for 6 years, he could have passed both Fed and Pete; bt we all av different opinions

The easy way to spoil a conversation!
All the intelligence was invented only for you so I couldn't reach some so I'll make u favour and leave you talking alone! Not in the mood to take small shit from this!
fmvgomes 2 years ago
Im not providing you any shit, Im belittling you however for not understanding the point of my previous post; its your own fault you are getting emotional about it and decide to walk away from the conversation
pistolpete58 2 years ago
So u call some1 retard and u wait people to dont take it emotional!
I tell you something: go fuck yourself! If people do not understand ur point of view maybe u should understand that maybe is ur fault! U ain't any kind of god of the communication!
If u don't have the intelligence to explain something without starting calling names then i feel sorry for you!
There's a lot of better things to do than being part of the frustrated life ur showing to have!
fmvgomes 2 years ago
I'm calling you a retard because you didnt understand my post, and whats the point in me arguing with someone who cant even understand what Im trying to analyse? How is it my fault, if my english is perfectly fine to construct basic/complex arguments regarding any kind of issue? Im no god in communication but I certainly can hold my on when it comes to written discussions/arguments. If i dont have the intelligence? Excuse me, who misconstrued my post? You did you asshole...
pistolpete58 2 years ago
I can call you mentally disabled if you like, but the fact is based on your posts, english is not your first language so when you start making arguments and construing my posts differently than they are intended, whos fault is that? Frustrated life? Hahaha oh man thats rich, u gotta stop assumin so much, who r u tell me I av a frustrated life; I'm engagin an arguement with another person and you try and put me down by trying 2 refute my post; even though you dont even understand it? Shut up man
pistolpete58 2 years ago
Your making it sound Hewitt and Safin were major obstacles for Federer, Safin whenever he was on and consistent, always beat Federer, and Hewitts game played into Feds strengths. They stole Sampras a few slams because Pete was in his reclining years as said before and was already on the verge of retirement. Agassi was 5-10 years younger when he contended for GS's v Sampras (his prime). Are you proud that Federer beat a 35 year old Agassi to win a Grandslam? If you wanna talk, read my description

well done nalbandian, especially after losing 5 games in a row and fed was serving for the match, really thought fed was gonna pull off the escape! what other times has federer lost from 2 sets up cos i cant remember any??
forder07 2 years ago
no offense to anyone, but i don't think this court is good at all because u can hear the footsteps very loud... this is just my opinion.

If the chair ump didn't give Nalby such a hard time with that Ace Nalby might have just crumbled up and surrendered.
It gave him a little chip on his shoulder there at the end.

why did they play 5 sets? This is not a grandslam it's not only a masters cup.
sirasitpiaratisit 2 years ago
Some tournament finals are played at 5 sets, check out Federer-Nadal at Rome final!
WaldoJeffers25 2 years ago
Back in the day they played to 5 sets in finals of ATP tour Master's Series and the Year End Finals. Nadal v. Federer's match at Rome which was probably the greatest match ever played before their Wimbledon match was 5 sets and that's not a slam.
SSky06 2 years ago
the rome final and also the miami 05 final, these are probably their best 2 matches along with wimbledon 08. i really wish they would bring back 5-set finals its so much better.
forder07 2 years ago
I agree. Three set finals are stupid. It eliminates so much of the skill from the game, as well as excitement. It's so hard to beat good players in 5 set matches, but three set matches are simpler if they start slow.
SSky06 2 years ago
hell of a match
djsewell 2 years ago
i think nalbandian is one of the best players ever but the problem with him is he cant quite keep up that high level of play in best out of five matches. if all the grandslams were only best out of 3 sets , u would definitely see nalbandian in the finals, but theyre not.
cyrusgreg 2 years ago
true. i JUST WIsh he could perform even to his high level consistently now often, but he can;t.

Nalbandian's return of serve is INSANE!!!
EnixRPG 2 years ago
seems like he has a habit of losing all his epics. AO 05, wimby 08, this one. he kicks ass when he thinks he has no chance then he gets in winning position and goes into his shell. happened again against Murray in the 08 masters cup

he gots a winning record over him will hoo rah for nalbandian but guess what nalbandians grand slam tally is set at zero
butterflycaught900 3 years ago 2
10 -8 federer
but nalbandian wins finals of tennis master cups and master of paris , federer only wins him at stupid tournaments but both are very good players.
Federer have more head than nalbandian.
argentinodiegomarado 3 years ago
you must be blind or something but nalbandian beat federer because roger's ankle was badly injured mid way through the match, hence the 6-2 6-1. sets
butterflycaught900 3 years ago 4
excuses excuses excuses.
The fact is this.
Federer were not tired nalbandian break him is only that.
so ok i could say nalbandian was tired when he loss 10 times with federer
-.-

cause it's synthetic carpet. i don't think that surface is used anymore but it used to be used a lot more. McEnroe won like 50 titles on carpet back in the day.

Nalbandian is too fat and lazy to be consistent. He should have won the US Open in 2003 when the retard New York crowd called his balls out against Roddick in the semis. Roddick having a slam over Nalbandian is a joke.
ihateuutube 3 years ago 22
you say it's a joke that roddick has a slam over nalbandian, but you just said yourself "he's to fat and lazy!" I agree with both tho. he is too fat and lazy but he should have won a slam by now.
gaudiofan 3 years ago
@ihateuutube I do agree that it was unfair for the crowd to call the ball in that US Open moment, but there was a moment in this match with an overrule where nalbandian almost wanted to blame the umpire for an ace. Roddick having a slam over nalbandian is not a joke, the only reason why roddick possibly doesn't have five slams is because of federer...........
Jamus182 1 year ago 2
@Jamus182 I can't say that. I don't if roddick would of won. That's some silly excuses. Nadal has 6 in federer's era, and he is gonna have 7 after sunday. Roddick could of still have 5-6 if he wanted to. He is just a big choker in the finals. He collapse when he see fed and play a one dimensional game.
Thutmosis7 1 year ago
@Thutmosis7 I wouldnt call roddick an out and out choker, the 2nd set tie break at wimbledon was a bit of a choke. He panics at certain times and plays a silly game sometimes against fed. Nadal has 6 in feds era, mainly becasue of clay, as well as the slower grass courts. of the 03,04,05,06 slam matches he played against fed, only 04 was his real chance of winning, so personally I wouldnt call him an out and out choker, but I see your point...
Jamus182 1 year ago
@Thutmosis7 ....I was just a bit dissapointed in the guys reaction to 'roddick having a slam over nalbandian'. He works damn hard to be where he is at today, and if nalbandian had even a little of roddicks determination, which still is something that is difficult to teach, he would be consitantly in contention of the slams, but he doesn't, so isnt
Jamus182 1 year ago 4
@Jamus182
That is so true...Roddick had a real string of 'bad luck' to consistently have to meet Fed in the finals. He would definitely have had more slams otherwise...
azarel7 1 year ago
@ihateuutube .......... Nalbandian had all the talant in the world and simply didn't use it, so its not a joke for andy to get a slam as although he isnt as talanted as a federer, nalbandian or safin, he works dam hard to put himself in contention in every match that he plays, which is more deserving of a major than anything nalbandian could ever do...........
Jamus182 1 year ago
@Jamus182 i agree. Nalbandian could be a number 3 perhaps now, but he didn't worked as hard as Rodick's did. I think Andy deserves a second slam and David deserves it too. and i'm from Argentina. David is a legend here! He's better than Del Potro, Gaudio and Coria, but he has to improve his tennis so he can easily win a g. slam. IMO.
luxardo2001 1 year ago
@ihateuutube ........I'm not dissing nalbandian, i love watching him play, but the comment 'Roddick having a slam over nalbandian is a joke' , is one of the most disrespectful comments iv read. Tennis over five sets rarely lies

LoafOfPint 4 years ago 8
Yeah it is. Federer and Nalbandian trading games and breaks back and forth first two sets, Federer then goes up 2 sets to love, then all of a sudden Nalbandian is 2 games away from the win, and then Federer comes back and has a chance to serve the match out and then ends up losing. Great match by both players however.
