The Oiler coaches had a game plan, which, when the players followed it, gave the OIlers three wins. In other games, the players did not follow the game plan for defeating the Flames, and it cost them. The Flames were more determined to win than were the OIlers. After their great season and their ridiculously easy win over the Canucks in the first round, the OIlers did not take the Flames nearly as seriously as they should have.
Poor Steve Smith. i hope people remember him as a very good dman who helped the Oilers win 3 cups, and not as a guy who made one bad mistake as a rookie.
Everyone makes a mistake, but this one by Smith ultimately proved to be the game-breaker and series-breaker. We'll never know if the Oilers would have eventually went on to win the Stanley Cup, sandwiched in between 2 Stanley Cups won the 2 years prior and the 2 years after. The Oilers may have won 5 straight Stanley Cups if they had beaten Calgary in this Game 7, and won the Cup that year.
@canucklehead70 The score was 2-2 after smith scored the goal the score was 2-3 and i am almost positive that there was about 14:00 minutes left in the third period in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
@deannumber11 Good Point....I always say the same regarding Bill Buckner. Don't worry that the Sox were up by 2 and the relievers could't get a guy out.
A very difficult series to think about, even to this day if your an Oiler fan. Game 7 going nearly identical to game 6, Calgary rushes to a 2-0 lead only to see Edmonton tie it. I remember thinking it was only a matter of time before the Oilers took the lead and finally put Calgary away. Didn't exactly happen that way. Steve Smith really took the heart of his team although they desperatley rallied but couldn't score. Calgary played a magnificent series combining discipline and hard work.
You're heart couldn't help but go out to him. That mistake gave many the chance to pin the blame for the series defeat squarely on him, and that's unfair. The Oilers underestimated the Flames, lost Games 1 and 5 at home, and should never have found themselves in such a position, that is where Calgary could have pulled out the series. Even Gretzky said that blaming Smith was a total copout.
For the duration of his career in Edmonton, everytime Steve Smith touched the puck in Calgary the whole crowd would yell "shoot!". To his credit, Smith had a great career and eventually played in Calgary.
Haha, I love how Marcus Napoloen Vermilion is putting the same copy/paste text every year there is a video about Smith's goal. It hurts Marcus's feelings.
I say Marcus ''Fatal Blow'' Vermilion for president please.
Yes, a fatal blow to the Oilers in that playoff series. What did they do? They got back in the finals the next year & won an EPIC 7 games series against the Flyers. Gretzky gets the Cup and he then passes it to.......................Steve Smith who skates around the ice with Lord Stanley's Cup!
This still brings a smile to my face.

Anyone know if Smith played another shift after that? I think there was about 15 minutes left at that point.

I don't think any of us can truly know how Steve Smith felt at the moment he saw the puck go into the net.

I don't think I would've wanted to be Steve Smith in the dressing room after that game.
