Clearly the finest rendition of one of Verdi's most treacherous arias (if not the most longest). It requires extremely wide vocal range, rapid register changes, notorious arppegio-like flexibility at the top of the stave, and excruciating coloratura articulation. Only Caballe manages the written notes a tempo, without the elephantine rallentandi of certain other famous sopranos -- and maintains beautiful tonal quality at every instant. A stupendous example of the art of singing.
La Caballé degli anni sessanta era davvero brava e musicalmente a posto. Cosa che puertroppo non si può dire di quella successiva, che in pratica si riscriveva la parte dalla prima all'ultima nota!
What you say aren't truth. Sutherlan never sang Ernanion stage nor in no production.; only she recorded for Decca in 1985. Caballe recorded for RAI Ernani in 1968; only sang this opera onstage in one production: San Francisco 1984, five performances.
I don't agree, Caballe makes the best coloratura here, even than the Sutherland's recording on sixty.
Freni never could make coloraturas and generally all Verdi is outside his fach; in several interviews she herself declared that sung Ernani was one of his great errors.
Leontyne Price, of course, has the most suitable voice to sing all the score.
@lrmusica I like Miss Caballe; however, this aria is Miss Price's and no one could touch her in her prime. So, I agree with you the entire aria seems as though it were written specifically for her and she performs it magnificiently.
How this written aria could be sung? And so brilliantly!

You can sing Rosa Ponselle sing Ernani on youtube, too, and it's remarkable. Not to take away from Caballe, because I love Monserrat.

Very nice. The whole performance (with Christoff and Prevedi) was very good.

Interesting that she transposes this down at this early stage in her career... still, a brilliant recording.

That is interesting, I'm glad you mentioned it. I have no answer...let me know if you come up with something.

This is not transposed down - it's in the right key. I have LP and CD versions of this performance - the CD is 1/2 step high!

@lungdoc They are envious, fans of another singer who can not appreciate art as a whole
