That's exactly what's so great and funny about his character. He doesn't have a clue!!. He's an old school John Waynish kind of guy who gets caught in a bizarre world of chinese demons and wizards. He's not exactly the hero, but, still, he manages to save the day in the end. Kurt Russell is the most underated actor alive and this film is seminal.
