I had a breeding pair of dwarf hamsters,i sold them all but 1 baby hamster i favored,sadly i accidently killed it because of my habit of giving them free roam of my room,sucks.

Hi optimusmikey, baby hamsters usually open their eyes at around 10 days old and by that stage it should be ok to carefully try handling them, make sure mother is around to see what you are doing and avoid sudden sharp movements or removing them from her view.

I once had baby hamsters too. But one morning i came to check and all i found was dead little bodies cause the father ate them :( I didnt knew back then that you have to remove the dad from the cage.

Hamsters depending on what kind do live short lives...

Dwarf live up to 2-3 years

Siran's live up to 2-4 years

and Teddy's live up to 4-5 Years.

No hamsters actually do that if they are either frightened in the early stages of their babies or if they lack protein, so you should give yoh hamster plenty o protein

well, basically, don't touch them when they are really young and if your hamster just eats one without you doing anything, then she's probably eating the runt or the weakest of the litter and you can't do anything about it sadly. )=

Hi RockyBowen, Syrian hamsters have to be kept solo, but most dwarf types can be social and live in pairs or more.

Our hamster parents were wronlgly sexed which is why we ended up with baby hamsters. Ideally you would keep pairs and groups in same sex groups.

Hamsters only make good mothers if they are happy and well fed. If a mother is stressed or lacks protein, she will eat her babies. Same goes with gerbils.

Hey excitablechicken you may be surprised hamsters make great mothers especially dwarf hamsters, and the dads are very nice too until they are 2-3 weeks old anyway.

Thanks, she is a wonderful mother, and is extremely caring. We we are also lucky in that she allows us to share and touch her babies from a very early stage. She even resuscitated one of her babies who had got a bit squashed under the others and looked like it was breathing its last!
