that's a shitty planet...fuck they found way better planets in other galaxys, like an earth with no land just sea all over and its 4 times the size of earth but there maybe could be dinosaur-like giangantic creatures underwater plus in the bottom it would go as cold as ice 7 its crazy and if its water evrywhere that would be deep as FUCK !!...but its still to far to get there only have a satelite-telescope image of it...but thats asweome...soon humans will start traveling space like air or land
Yep you saw something..it was obama looking for hope and change while fucking the Space Industry right in the ass for acorn and his so called new goverment (Socialist) meanwhile the rest of the world waits while he hands out the moeny to shit programs, projects, groups, and his friends that will never produce anything for the benefit of mankind except food stamps, handouts, open borders, and insurance for those who sit on their ass all day while we contribute, build and progress humans as a whole.
ARE YOU A IDIOT? Read a book ninion...Venus has the surface temp of molten lead...where did you get cold? People like you ruin the "smart" for the rest of us. Do you know how to read?!?
You people miss the point. regardless if there is surface ice, they might find living organisms in below the surface. Plus it's a victory for us because it teaches us how to land a craft on it's own. There is a 20 minute delay in communication so the thing has to think for itself. I'm surprized we were able to do it in 1976 let alone today. You wouldn't have a home computer if it wasn't fort nasa research micro technology. NASA saves lives in the long run. Respect that.
closer to 8 minute delay. i agree with most of what you said, but this lander really is quite lame compared to the last few missions. the two rovers are of course amazing (even if they are starting to show their age), and the MRO in orbit is the best camera and radio ever to leave earth orbit. 55 Terabytes beamed back so far. pictures of the surface like those in google earth. And the geniuses flying it managed to snap a pic of this lander WHILE IT WAS STILL IN THE AIR! as well as on the ground.
Oh yeah, and every American is for the war right?!?! We are well aware that our government is ruining our country and killing many innocent people, but what exactly does one individual have to do with it? If I could I'd stop it in a instant. Learn to be kind to everyone, it's a lot more affective then the hate that you're putting out there.
The soil in the immediate foreground has a "fibrous" texture, and the distant features look "soft". Very different from the desert terrain the two rovers have found, probably due repetitive freeze/thaw cycles. Hope Phoenix makes some interesting discoveries before it freezes up. Really looking forward to further investigation of the "glass tubes", though.
Looks like Bakersfield, CA.

How is this a *video* shot by the lander?
Looks like it's just a scan across a static image.

@WideGauge
Yes, this is just a picture, the lander's first. Quite a picture, though!

Did I see something moving out there?
I think I did; there's definately something moving out there.
Did you see that, at about 48 seconds?

Venus has surface tempertures of 475 C (890 F) and pressures 90 times greater than Earth's, and the planet's surface is mostly rock.

Why do we spend so much time and money going to Mars and not Venus? Is Venus so boring?
leckiradnak 3 years ago
Mars resembles the earth most.
DeeJayBounce 3 years ago
Venus is anything BUT boring .. the planet is a super-hot, high pressure cooker. Look up the Venera missions of the USSR.

Everything looks like it was shaped by water.
How else to explain the contours, runnels, channels?

You should become a scientist. Damn that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Ever notice most if not all the pictures from Mars are out of focus way out in the distance?
Take a look for yourself. The terrain out by the horizon is out of focus.

A shame Phoenix doesn't have wheels. There might be ice only 3 metres away.....and it can't reach.
