  • Classic song and sooooooo much better than the "1987" version.

  • i just love the original version

  • like a hobo I was born to walk alone....yeah..me!!!!!

  • Like a homo I was born to walk alone? That doesn't even make sense.

  • @MarcusErection Hobo - American slang for Homeless boy, this is the original version it was changed to loner on later versions and DC would switch it in different live versions from time to time. I'm sure he is not homophobic!

  • WTF??!! This is absolutely terrible compared to the 1987 video. Where are the cool ass pretty-boy guitar players and pyro?? No hot girl dancing on the Jaguars. Nothing!

  • I like it , but think the 87 version is far better

  • I love whitesnake! But I prefer the 87 version of these songs way better, sound more harder

also drifter does sound better ;]

  • I like it, Reminds me of the old cold war days in Germany. I really liked this song - still do.

  • What the USA has to understand is THIS is the version the UK knows, when the other version came out we in the UK were all saying "what the hell is a drifter? why have they changed the lyrics? RIP Mel this is still by far the best !!

  • Like a hobo i was made to walk alone. A little lyric change. = )

  • I got to see Whitesnake in 1981 on the Ready an Willin tour with Ian Paice on drums. Was hearing impaired for three days afterwards.:) Great band

  • whats a Hobo? lol

  • @EternalNaga187 homeless

  • Адік, вони вже старі пердуни.

  • It kind of funny seeing Mel Galley in the video, but hearing Bernie Marsden on the audio track. R.I.P. Mel.

  • "Like a homo I was born to walk alone!" Keep on walkin', homo. A bit like that other 'Snake song, "Anal Love in the Heart of the City." I didn't know ol' Cov lived in San Francisco.

  • @TheWolfe666 HOBO not HOMO ya dweeb!

  • @texs2007 Hey guy, do you really think that, as a fan of Whitesnake for something like 25 years, I don't know their music backwards and forwards? Can you really not tell when someone is making a joke? Do you really think I believe that Coverdale is a homo, after he's been married to Tawny Kitaen and that lovely pole-dance instructor he's currently with? Thay guy pulls the 'tang like nobody's business! Must be great to be a rock star, I'm so jealous.

  • @TheWolfe666 Easy, dude. That was for those who,on first hearing this version, thought they [Coverdale and whomever the other backing vocalists were - maybe Marsden and moody?] were singing that...not aimed at you in any way.

  • @TheWolfe666 Freudian much?

  • I'm sitting back,

    doing my seven-page-essay-that-i-hate-so-much,

    and rocking out to whitesnake

    HELL YAH!:)

  • @SWEETnSOURGyrl Hang in there, and keep up the classic tunes!

  • The best and only version of the guys playing this song the way they wrote it.

When it came over to the British market they were told to write out the word Hobo because it sounded too much like homo (gay slang) so they changed the word to Drifter.

Too many suits toking on fat cigars thinking they were doing us a favour been moral judges on our behalf without asking. Fuck... talk about George Orwell's vision of Big Brother... and Rush with 'The Temples of Syrinx' from the 2112 album

    Peace

  • @RumbleGuts2112 not quite,RumbleGuts. Coverdale himself said he rewrote that line even before anyone ever noticed - he didn't want to turn off ANY fans.

  • @texs2007 I just remember it from school way too many moons ago. This version was played for a short while and then it suddenly changed to the drifter version. I think it was in the music paper NME where a reporter said they were told to change it. I was naive enough back then to believe journalists told the truth lol

I'm never too old to learn so thanks for letting me know the real truth :)

    Peace

  • Steve@drums-drums-drums says...Yesssss! I only bought 'Slide It In' because Cozy was in the lineup (from Jef Beck fame). Was this song even on that?- but was a fan ever since. I mean listen to that Voice! Coverdale in total control - lyric only mildly inane, but the inherent musicality makes it oh so listenable!

  • awful verison man!

  • I didn't think Hobo sounded like Homo until David said it. Now all I can hear is Homo. :D

Classic track - next time I'm at karaoke this is getting murdered.

  • Oh Dave, you have been hurt. Who hurt you? Tell me who hurt you. Tell me Dave. Tell me.

  • @AJT041979 I believe this quote applies originally to Lionel Richie.

  • @Metalhead121591 Yeah it's a cross-platform cultural reference. Works on a number of levels. It could even arguably be applied to Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division if you addressed it directly to 'Ian' as opposed to 'Dave' or 'Lionel'. Or indeed if the lyrics of that song weren't based in the tragic reality of marital infidelity, suicide and a child being left without a father. Because that's not funny.

  • always

  • Holy Crap! That was awesome!!! It's like April Wine and Thin Lizzy had prog light baby!!!! I prefer this version WAAAY more! And I grew up on early MTV!!! :)

  • amazing song

  • immaculate! where r these blokes now? cheers!

  • @TheCandice40

Sadly Cozy Powel joined the Supergroup in the sky some years ago...

  • He's from near where I grew up!

  • @1599maybole not anymore i guess

  • There's nothing like the '87 version, but this is really good. Drifter sounds better to me than hobo. I'm glad he changed it.

  • I cant take this seriosly after he said hobo!!! :D

  • @KadeshLeMort no doubt lmfao

  • this is the best song when you are gettin over break up.

  • This reminds me of my first car I bought in 87'....1972 Buick Electra that was painted green with a paint brush, wiring was messed up, it had a toggle switch for the headlights :D....the 455 ran great though, and that's all I cared.

    I paid 200 dollars for it....yah! :D

    *Sigh* I miss those days.

  • I love the 87 version b/c it's what I grew up with....I love the original version b/c it's more meat and potatoes, Bad Company-ish, soulful, earthy, Rod Stewart type good old fashioned rock...

  • @GuitarBill13 ...A hobo is basically a homeless person that just wanders from town to town.

  • @Sveldtguy hahan i thought he said 'homo' for a sec lol

  • @breezizzle Thats why he changed the lyric from hobo to drifter in the later version.

  • Actually on this(the '82 album version) Ian Paice is playing the drums, he isnt in the video because he had already left the band before the album was put out.

  • Never realized the original words were "like a hobo I was born to walk alone" when the later version I know is "like a drifter I was born to walk alone".

  • @Sveldtguy what is a hobo???

  • @GuitarBill13 Wow...seriously?

  • @jetdog13 what??i am not english and i don't know some special words...:/

  • Dave Coverdale has alot of resemblance to Robert Plant. Both great singers

  • Ah we meet again 240p.

  • thumbs up If you noticed the beginning of "Guilty of Love" in the very end of the video.

  • When the Movie Old School came out, I was working in a Movie Theater and I was laughing my fucking ass off!

  • OLD SCHOOL bad ass

  • sorry to disappoint you - this is not Tony Iommi on the bass - it's Colin Hodgkinson

    but the lineup is perfect....

  • This is often overlooked, but what we see here is actually a bit of what you might call a "supergroup".

David Coverdale and Jon Lord were from Deep Purple

    Cozy Powell of Rainbow

    Bernie Marsden of UFO

    Mel Galley of Trapeze

and last but not least, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, who for some reason is playing bass instead of guitar lol.

  • The Best and the only version, what a great song.....

  • cool.. i never knew there was an original, i lke this version also. great early 80's pure rock. this would almost seemed to be in the 70's. is this really in 82??

  • This video rocks so hard and raw. I prefer this version better than the popular one.

  • rapaz essa musica é muito foda '-'

  • I feel this song is talking to me.

  • Gaga Has sent me O_O!,

  • 36 people wouldn't know good music if it sat on there face and wiggled

  • I fell in love with this man's voice.

  • I Was Born In Wrong Era 80`s Rules

  • A hammond organ is always sexier that synthesizers. The production of the 87 version is more commercial and open. Typical for the 80's. Good song from when Coverdale still was a rocknroller not God's gift to the women....

  • I prefer this version than the poppy 87' one.

  • @lgbm92 It may have been poppy, but it had Johnny Sykes, the unamed hero of the whole album.

You are correct, It IS indeed amazing how much record production changed in 5 years......Everything turned into Mutt Lange quadruple tracked vocals and postproduction on everything, even friggin tambourines.

And then PRoTools was born, and his retatrded stepbrother Autotune.

It takes a band 2 years to make a record, the early Beatles records took 2 days.

  • american dad!

  • this sucks compared to the 87 version

  • Whos here because of The Fighter? Nah im jk This song is legendary lmao.

  • WOW! I had no idea there was another version of this song! Listening to this, it really does sound like both versions were products of their time. One is more rock/soul/r&b sounding and the other is total power ballad. Amazing.

  • No...you people trying to do White Snake...you better at least be able to stank in the man's shadow!

  • definitely like "drifter" over "hobo"

  • Every version of this song is great.Jon Lord is a legend.

  • Is it just me or are pretty much all the singers from the 80's and 90's so much more fucking sexier than all the other classic rockers in our time?? im pretty sure thats what i mean....... *Yawn*

  • I saw David singing yesterday this song at bucharest rock the city.He has the same power of doing a great show indeed. The Snake will bite forever!!!LOL

  • @ringroad2010 I just saw them 2 weeks ago in Milan and I agree with you 100%! David is GREAT!

  • That keyboard player from 2:29 to 2:31 looks like the type of person who produces porn films

  • @makaras He does!!!

  • @makaras ''the keyboard player'' is one of the greatest in music history.his talent marked a lot of rock and roll songs from late '70 to '90.No association with porn films ,maybe we can call his music '' orgasmic''because it takes us so high as feeling.....if you could understand, but I doubt 'cause I don't imagine someone thinking this way about Jon Lord

  • Never heard this version before - dare I say...I prefer it to the 1987 version...?

  • @makaras Me too but this version has JON FUCKING LORD.

  • @cubby3o5 So you like Jon Lord? Or you hate him? "Fucking" could suggest either way, LOL

  • @makaras I think Jon is amazing, especially in Deep Purple.

  • Yeah

  • And you know what? After almost 30 years Whitesnake still play this GREAT song during their concerts! I just saw them last week and they were AWESOME!

The Snake still bites! Whitesnake RULE FOREVER! Coverdale you're the BEST!

  • Cuando la musica era musica!!!

  • I just came for the 780th time!

  • cobra branca na área !!!

    vai pra pqp !!!

    som do caralho !

  • AMO ESTA CANCION!!!!!!

  • Why the other Like button is upside down?

  • wheres the fucking solo ?????!!!!!!!!

  • WOW, AMAZING!!!!

the only thing that bothers me is the guitar solo(s) ha ha...

    but very cool in general...

  • voice divine . . .

  • i used to look like coverdale ....but couldn't sing like him ....now after much toil and balls dropping i can sing like him ....but i'm now a fat bald porker -lifes not fuckin fair-boo hoo...mum ....i want my money back .

  • @TheMichaelseymour u must have been divine! :)

  • this fuckin` 2000-2010 decade is very baaaaaaaaaad, the `80 were very great, cant hear anything normal today -.-

  • Fun fact, David changed the lyric ''Hobo'' to ''Drifter'' in the '87 version, because he was afraid people might think he is singing ''Homo'' rather than ''Hobo''

  • setelah 30 tahun baru nonton lagi whitesnake ! wow.... keren, like it n my favourite song.....nice

  • IT GIVES STRONG FRESH BREATH.

  • Gosto muito de ti ,parvo

  • My all time favourite !! This song gives me strength to go on no metter what !

  • Wow ... this video is almost 30 years old ... and it ROCKS...

now 1987 ... they did their own remake which was incredible .... so talk about re-inventing oneself ...

...this is the result of great lyrics + great rock + great band ... one of the best songs and bands ever ... (in every song it seems they sing their hearts out !)

    what a L E G A C Y !!

  • This is interesting.... I perfer the 1988 version as well but this is like the baby and its growing up XD So its good =D

  • i really love this version, thanx :D

  • OKAY I am serious shock here! Whitesnake's HUGE SMASH hit single was actually a re-recording of their 1982 album version of it! I AM IN COMPLETE SHOCK HERE! I had no clue that there remade there own song to took it to number one! C R A Z Y I love it!

  • @CandyAppleBlueTV Different line up when rerecorded - so obviously made a big difference!

  • Did he say, "Like a hobo, I was born to walk alone"? Yeah, I would have to say I much prefer the 1988 version. "Like a drifter ..."

  • I like this version but grew up with the remake. It had more power and of course Tawny.

  • this version lacks of power in my IMO

  • love this one

  • mad good tune dude! same year my kid bro was born! Hw was a lil chick magnet n he got me alotta dates. Now? well, yu know, hez a dad n his son's a lil babe magnet.

my kid bro? ya right! like the vid! thx yo.

  • original & best version !

  • R.I.P. Mel Galley :(

  • Nice thanks for sharing I've never heard this version.

  • @k9keo Yeah this is the classic Whitesnake lineup I grew up with, before they went all..umm..transatlantic

  • Thank you very much for Sharing!

What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!

Keep up the good work. Hope You Are Having A Splendid Day!

    A New Friend

    Erick

  • Frank the Tank!

  • mums......

  • que bueno¡¡¡

  • Wow, blew me away, didn't expect that! Thanks!

  • i see a 'like' button, but where's the 'epic' button??

  • @dermegaking It is the PLAY button!!

  • Comment removed

  • @dermegaking I guess, the 36 people who disliked the vid, thought, the "thumb down" is the "SuperMegaEpicButton"

  • To quote of borat : Coverdale is good : All other sing have voice of little girl.

{ geddy lee , axl , plant , etc -high pitch = little girls } but coversdale = much potasium

in ballsack ...he very good in durp peeple "stormbranger" = equals best for rock

    I like sax.

  • That's a strange line up... Cozy Powell and Jon Lord together. Anyway, the original drummer for this song is Ian Paice, the best drummer of rock'n'roll.

  • All very 'bluesy', but good!

  • Exelente, !!!!!!!!

  • I freaking love this song... perfect song to listen to after finding out my man cheated on me...

  • @lola83179 im sorry to hear that :(

  • I freaking love this song... perfect for finding out my man cheated on me...

  • Sitting here, listening to this song. I read the comments and thought, "Oh, cool, that's why they changed it to drifter." Now evey time he sings, "Like a hobo I was born to walk alone." I can't help but laugh now, cause it makes me think, "Ha homo's are born to walk alone. Sounds like a Southern politicians view on gay marriage."

  • co0000ol!

  • just dont sound the same i would rather hear it on a record player

  • definately sounds better with those heavy power chords

  • Comment removed

  • @esspears look on the right

  • @aaronius4444 I sifted through a dozen crap videos before I found the original music video.

  • It's just a matter of taste which song is better. For me, the best version is from the album 1987 (re-made). This is only good. Maybe because I like the power in the later one. However, that's great that fan can choose which version likes to hear!

  • Not as different as I expected it to be from what people said about it. Rereleasing it only 5 years later with a different but not upside-down change wouldn't have always been a hit with fans.

The video with Tawney Kitaen and the Jaaaaags probably helped, though.

  • Yeah this version sort of has little jive to it. I little bit more smooth. Where the 1987 version is just all rock and hair metal . But I like both versions.

  • prefer this version anytime. had more feel to it than the later metal version.

  • 1982 and 1987 versions are good

  • The dude on slide guitar is Nicky Moody, Mel Galley on guitar and Neil Murry on bass. The best version of the song.

  • LOOKS LIKE J. LORD ON KEYBOARDS!!!

  • @wjacobs761 But it's Jon Lord on the keyboards man!!!

    Cheers from Brazil.

  • wow!!! best version ever!!!

  • waht does HOBO mean ? xD

  • @solunasunrise Its American slang for HOmless BOy (or person)! Simples!!! I like the HOBO version it fits well - luckily drifter fits OK too!

  • Super und nochmals Super.

  • Ora pro Nobis

  • Reminds me of my ski trip to Vermont ooohhh so many years ago!! And so many awesome memories.

  • He's really trying to make it sound like deep purple which is great but the two bands differ greatly as DP is 10 times better. but still I kinda like this version better.

  • @aronos "he'r really trying to make it sound like deep purple"

excuse me, but who brought the blues into DP ? He did.

And I would argue that this song is much better than you give it credit for and the band as well. Let's remember who was most succseful in the US for that matter, this song later became a #1 hit for that matter. No DP member has had such success as coverdale has had musically.

  • Sounds like a mama's boy crying

  • i like it really!!!!!

  • It´s great!!!

  • It sounds like they are trying to cover the song, but meanwhile it's their song!

  • Lembro de uma pessoa muito querida que era fanática por Whitesnake

meu coração dói pra cassete. =/

  • Better version, and the best!

  • Very similar to Robert Plant his way on stage

  • 722,000 i feel special :P i love this song so much :X:X:X

  • muitooooo FOOOOOODA

  • Coverdale was sooooooooooo HOT before MTV destroyed everything!

  • It is a great song then and now. But the hair version does rock a bit more. And Cozy Powell...well rest in piece my friend.

  • weak...
