  • If you guys like this then you should check out Gilbert Williams! These guys are amazing :)

  • My three favorite artists are Maxfield Parrish, William M. Harnett and Johannes Vermeer. But Maxfield Parrish is always first.

  • ALL painters throughout all history pre 20th century were 'illustrators' under the modern conception, that's when the art establishment decided to throw away centuries of accrued painting knowledge in favour of pointless and absurd 'abstract expressionism', and it's been that way ever since.

  • I like the way he plays with light, and captures it.

  • I read a lot about Parrish. Two interesting things about the way he painted are, (1) he used many layers of nearly translucent paint (pigment mixed with something like shellac) to get that great depth of blue; and (2) he made small piles of rock, sand and stone which he then expanded into fantastic mountains, cliffs, etc. And then of course he draped young people and painted them into the setting. He really was a master of technique as well as a visionary.

  • love love love Parrish!!

  • My favorite Philadelphian, other than Ben Franklin.

  • Blissful! My fav pic is at 1:08, anyone know the title of that piece? Dreamland delights, his work gleams with Classic nobility!

  • Canon & Parrish

    A Perfect Match

    Thanks for Sharing!

  • Great work...often you hear people dismiss someone's work by saying..."it's just illustration...he's an illustrator". But think of all the great artists who were illustrators: Parrish, Mucha, Beardsley, Arthur Rackham, N.C. Wyeth..so many

  • this was very beutifullly done.

parrish has always made me sad. the ever striving for that far away pavilion, and never reaching it. with the pachelbel to go with the beautiful imagers,... it made me cry.

  • I'm different from you mindy, his work always made me feel calm and happy.

  • I love the way he does clouds. makes me wish I could fly.

  • His paintings illuminate the commonplace things of life with a heavenly glow that is almost difficult to take in at times. So beautiful. They leave me "homesick for Eden", as a friend once wrote. Thank you for sharing this--along with the music--as you did. I will pass it along.

  • Very well done. The most beautiful piece of music to flow with the most beautiful illustrations of Art....

just a note: a very subtle zoom would've been a nice touch and I was hoping to have "Daybreak" as the last image....lingering in my mind....so peaceful and joyous. Thank you for sharing this excellent compilation.

  • Maxfield Parrish, classic illustrator, always been a big favorite of mine. I can see how NC Wyeth was influenced by him, I believe that NC must have really also surrounded Andrew with Parrish works.

  • A favorite of my teens. I had not seen the wintry painting before. Very nice, thanks for making this.

  • Love your vids...have you got anything with the Slavic Epics of Mucha?

  • I have made a video on Mucha and I think there may me a pic of one of his Slavic paintings, don't quote me on that though. I am happy you enjoy them, my aim is to spread the love of painting and painters.

    Peace.

  • My alter ego ^ shhhhhhhhh!

  • Lyrical and mystical. Those "dreamscapes" of his were so intriguing. You just wanted to escape into one and see it "in person". And that magnificent tree at 3:02 is fabulous! Thanks again, brendafohio, for another great blending of art/music.

  • Thanks for watching! Art rules!

  • Golden & Splendiferous! ;)

  • 2:30 looks like it could be a Hopi village in Arizona. I didn't know he did any paintings that were definitely American West scenes. Some seem generically mountainous but could be Swizterland. Any help?

  • Parrish went to Arizona in 1902 to help him when he had Tuberculosis. He painted more than a few works there. The one you see here at 2:30 is titled "Pueblo Dwellings".

  • Thanks for the info. I'd love to see the original in person. 1902 was around the time the Hopi were overrun with tourists and decided to severely limit access, no photos in the old villages, you can't even draw pictures there today.

  • I know he was famous for 'the Parrish Blue' I think my favourite is 'Stars'. Bye!

  • Thank you!

  • Does anyone know the name of the painting where the "king" looks like he is in despair on the thrown, with his head down on his arm ???

  • Young King of the Black Isles

    1910

    Lithograph

    11 x 8 5/8 inches (28 x 22 cm)

Free Library of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

  • Umm--the Canon's in D, not D minor.

  • Do huh? All I did was copy and paste from the title on Dogpile. Classical music is a new thing for me so I could not say if it is minor, major orrrr what. All I know is, it's beautiful! But I shall leave your correction here for the viewer. Thank you for your comment.

  • He was an amazing artist, and he influence so many who came after him. I'd like to live in that world of tall clouds, lush foliage and craggy blue mountains.

  • Oh yes a dreamy place it seems to be.....I would like to exist in a place like that too!

  • Because of my screen name, I thought I should leave a comment here. One day I'd like to put together a complilation of Parrish pictures using something idyllic by Debussy in the background.

  • Love this song - recently have discovered the beauty in the melody, sensations sliding as the song builds..

and you... adding Parrish's works.. truly lovely

    Thank you... *sheri*

  • Thank you :)

  • Hermosísimo, fascinante!!

  • Thank you lilamagritte, I always enjoy hearing from youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu :D

  • wow- one of my favorite illustrators/artists. There were a few in there I hadn't seen before, and a few I wouldn't have guessed were his at all. Thanks for yet another bit of art history :)

  • Thank you woosteria, for your comment. Don't you just love the mystical quality of Parrish.

  • As a teen, I remember finding out about Max Parrish, NC Wyeth, and Tolkien, and being very inspired by all of them. The fantasy art grabbed my imagination, and made a huge impression. To this day, I still enjoy it very much. Thanks for sharing this video!
