Baraak Allahu fiiek for this! my cousins warned me against this i never quite really understood why until reading the links above and listening to this. so jzk.
Shaikh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah- said: "And such as the People of Innovation among the people of the [innovated] sayings that oppose the Book and the Sunnah or the acts of worship opposing the Book and the Sunnah - for exposing their condition and warning the Ummah about them is obligatory by unanimous agreement of the Muslims - ...
...until it was said to Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal: 'Is it more loved to you that a man fasts, prays and peforms tawaaf or that he speaks about the People of Innovation [i.e. exposes them and warns about them]?' He replied: 'When he stands, prays and performs tawaaf that is for himself but when he talks about the People of Innovation then that is for the Muslims and this is more excellent."
Shaykh ul Islam lbn Taymiyyah (d.728H) - rahimahullaah - said: "There is no criticism for the one who proclaims the way (madhdhab) of the Salaf, who attaches himself to it and refers to it. Rather, it is obligatory to accept that from him by unanimous agreement (Ittifaaq) because the way (madhdhab) of the Salaf is nothing but the Truth (Haqq)." [Majmoo al-Fataawaa 4:149]
Shaikh Saalih Aal ash-Shaikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs of Saudi Arabia, stated, "Muslims are of two groups: Salafis and Khalafis. As for the Salafis, then they are the followers of Salaf us-Saalih (first three generations of Muslims). And as for the Khalafis, then they are the followers of the understanding of the Khalaf and they are also called Innovators." (Haadhihi Mafaaheemunaa, Chapter on Ascription Salaf and Salafiyyah).
The word "Salafiyyah" was not applied during the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and his companions this being due to the fact that the Muslims were upon the correct Islaam and there was no need for a word such as "Salafiyyah" at that time. However, when the tribulations occurred and the sects increased and the Ummah split the Ulamaa of the Ummaah stood to distinguish those upon the truth from those upon falsehood and hence they stated "Ahl ul-Hadeeth" and "as-Salaf".
Abu Haneefah (d. 150H) (rahimahullaah) said: "Adhere to the athar (narration) and the tareeqah (way) of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors) and beware of newly invented matters for all of it is innovation." (Reported by As-Suyootee in Sawn al Mantaq wal-Kalaam p.32)
"as-Salafiyyah" is distinguished from all the various Islamic factions due to their ascription to what guarantees for them the correct and true Islaam, which is adherence to what the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and his companions were upon.
Our Pious Predecessors are the Ahlul-Hadeeth and the Salafi is the one who follows them. The Salafis are given this noble name (Ahlul-Hadeeth), generation after generation, up until our time today.
Imaam ash-Sha'bee, who met more then five-hundred Companions of Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) referred to the Companions as "Ahlul-Hadeeth". (Tadhkiratul-Huffaadh 1/73).
Therefore it is confirmed with this proof, that the way of the Ahlul-Hadeeth, the Salafis was not established by any modern-day sect or party, it is not a new Madhhab! Rather its foundation lies with the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and what he left his Companions upon.
Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan said, "And how can making ones madhhab that of the Salaf be an innovation, an astray innovation?! And how can it be an innovation when it is but the following of the madhhab of the Salaf, and following their madhhab is obligatory by the Book and the Sunnah, and truth and guidance?!" (al-Bayaan p. 156).
He has had mistakes of declaring all of the Muslim rulers in the world to be Mushrikeen and he has called to hizbiyyah for decades now.
We can not take from the people with such grave mistakes because they can lead people astray very easily. Most of what he says is correct, but what he says of incorrectness is far too detrimental to one's hereafter.
Bilal has many errors, many of which are still propagated in the field of hajr, the ahl ul-bidah, taaawun, and we do not see any great clarity or the type of clarification from ones errors that are required when errors are made of this nature.

Imaam Abdul-Azeez bin Abdur-Rahmaan Aal as-Saood stated:
"Indeed I am Salafi, my aqidah is Salafiyyah, by whose requirements I traverse upon the Book and the Sunnah".
(Stated during the pilgrimage of 1965, Al-Mushaf was-Sayf p.135).

We are mistaken.
We cannot call ourselves 'salafi's'
The Salaf are the predecessors, so in that case, how can we call ourselves salafi when we are living now and not from the past.
muslim10 4 years ago 2
the salaf are the predecessors but a salafi is a person who follows the salaf..
note: salaf and salafi

the word "Salaf" was used by the PROPHET (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) himself. He said to Faatimah,
"How excellent a Salaf I am for you." (Muslim, no. 2450).
