  • There's nothing like a full frame camera and a Nikon 24-70. I shot my first set of images with my used D700 at a basketball game and compared to the D300 I use, nothing beats it. The tones are crazy amazing and the depth (feel of the image not DOF) is great. Granted, you do need to do slight RAW processing to get the best image.

  • Thank you for breaking this all down into layman's terms. Peace!

  • Bro, can i use a 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 type lens (i mean kind of cheap lens) on a d700 ?

  • @tiestosoul dx lens are no good on fx cameras like the d700 except in dx mode which is only 5 mega pixels on the d700

  • @QQQQcon cheers, i will go for a d300 then

  • I disagree with a few things you said, first third party lenses can give you exceptional quality! Also one of the main advantages is of a full frame camera is the image quality, even though both have the same megapixels the pixels them selfs are going to be much cleaner and crisper with the FX sensor. Please do a little more research next time before you start trying to teach people.

  • @AmazingMrguy if you can afford a full frame camera you should get good lenses, if not then go for a cheaper camera and spend your money on good glass. tokina is the only lens i would trust. I dont know where you get the idea that I disagree with image quality being better on full frame. All i say is low isos dont show a big difference between the two and that is the truth. full frame all the way for higher iso value where image quality is far superior.

  • Thanks for the video, good stuff. I'm dead broke right now, and I'm getting by with a Nikon d80. After watching this video, I'm thinking of saving up for the d300. I primarily shoot surfing, and on top of saving for the d300, I'm also saving for a water housing (about 1500 frickin dollars). With surf photography, you can't really go far with out the housing. Do you recommend saving up for the d300? Would it make a much better difference than the d80?

  • @saltyglass if you think you need the speed of the d300 then yes it is worth it. the d300 can shoot alot faster than the d80.

  • As a novice photographer would you recomnend, would you recommend a d7000 (new) or a (d300) used? I like landscape photog. I learned a lot from your video, very concise.

  • @TOPLVAGENT d7000 anyday

  • I like your video but I do have 1 thing to say about 3rd party lenses. I want to compare the Sigma 70-200 2.8 vs the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 non VR. There is hardly a difference. Tests after tests have been compiled and proven that the cost associated with the nikkor 70-200 2.8 vs the Sigma is huge given the image quality produced. In this case, I would go with a Sigma 70-200 2.8 over the Nikkor just because of the minimal difference in quality.

  • DX is apc sized sensor- FX is Full Frame

  • I dont understand how Nikon names their series. D300-DX, D700-FX, D7000-DX,

  • thanks for the video, good voice, good introduction and good talk. I love your video and its content

  • Good Review

  • tooo underesposed !!!!

  • for studio work would you say d700 or d300s both with 24-70 2.8

  • @SRAphotog d700

  • Nikon D300 Price And Full Specifications on:

    nikond300 price .net

  • Do you have a flickr account?

  • @coquiangel yes the link is on my main page

  • Great review, However I wish I understood just what he is saying. He explained himself very good but I have a Nikon D40X, just bought a D300S, the camera is way over my head.

  • @Billyboy3934 yeah thats a big jump, I shot with a D40X for about 2 years, then jumped to a D300, but I was already shooting manual etc on the D40x so really wasn't a difference for me.

  • Is the D400 coming out soon?

  • Not really a camera-specific "comparison". Most of the video explains fx vs dx sensors and other general elementary stuff. I was expecting more about each camera. Do people shopping in this price range really not know that a dx sensor "gives you more reach"?

  • @in2food fx vs dx is a difference between the cameras, this is a comparison not a detailed review of each camera. and yes a ton of people, believe it or not, find this review helpful.

  • @QQQQcon

I myself found it very very helpful...

  • @QQQQcon I found it really helpful, thanks.

  • Thanks for posting. This is the best comparative review I've come across!!

  • copyright is not stupid. Just ask to use it, I do and they say yes.

  • this is the Best review ive ever seen on these 2 cameras... very accurate and definitely helped me... D300 it IS !!!! thanks alot BRO!

  • Hi, How does the d700 compare to the d300 in terms of iso? How much stop is it better? Does the 1600 iso on the d300 looks like 6400 on d700? Thanks!

  • @bboi0813 d700 is a lot better at least a full stop at higher iso.

  • @QQQQcon I have a girlfriend who wants to make studio portrait size photos, say 24in wide or so. What do you feel about buying the d300 or d300s vs the d700? If I understand correctly the d700's advantage is mostly in dim lit photos and larger prints?

  • @Quasimoto44 the d7000 will give you better results than the d300 and d300s. For a studio the d7000 will preform as well as the d700 as long as you use iso below 1600.

  • @QQQQcon Thanks much!

  • That was a superb review/comparison, that really has me rethinking resolutions I was so sure about just ten minutes ago. I want to buy a D700, and I was sure it was the camera I need and have to have until now. I prefer to shoot in ambient light at wide aperture settings, which is why I'm so in love with the D700, but now... Now, maybe I don't need to spend so much money to have a quality camera. I don't know. He makes really good points about good lenses vs good cameras. Very informative review

  • Excellent reveiw & tips. The info you gave wes really spot on. thankyou : )

  • hi man :D

I want to buy the D700, but i think Nikon is gonna come out wid a new camera!

    What you recomend?

  • @miguelduarte91 I would wait this month, something might come out.

  • @QQQQcon hi, thanks for your help, I wait this month :D

  • @QQQQcon The d700s is coming with hd video (so I've been told) but I couldn't/can't wait, getting the d700 next week.

  • @QQQQcon I think there will be a new model coming for d300s rather than d700, d9000

  • @miguelduarte91 if I were you, wait until the Nikon D3100 comes out or get the Nikon D5000. D3100 doesn't really have much advantage over the D5000. go on Dpreviews and find out.

  • Thank you. A very succinct and plain English explanation of the difference between the D300 and the D700. My main interest is bird photography in goodish light, so on the basis of your explanation it seems that the D300 is the one for me.

  • is the d300s a profesiional camera? and wich one is better for sports photography?

  • @javikilledit it is a semi pro camera and the d700 is better for night time sports because of its low noise at high iso.

  • @QQQQcon its mostly outdoor sports like bmx and skateboarding is the d700 still the ideal one?

  • @javikilledit if it is still in the day time the d300 is fine

  • @QQQQcon would you get a d700 over a d3s? Im trying to decide. The d700's iso is plenty good for me, so that isnt an issue, even tho the d3s has unbelievable iso powers. but what other specs are significantly better on the d3s

  • @pmbazman15 no I would get the d700

  • @javikilledit don't go for nikon. pick 50D or 7D. it has better specs than the old nikon d300s and better bang for your buck!

  • The D700 also has shorter DOF, D700 shooting at 8ft using a 75mm at F4 is comparible to D300 using a 50 at F2.8 to create the same DOF. Notice D700 = F4 and D300 = F2.8 for similar DOF.

The above makes D700 better choice for portriats, and sometimes beyond the D300's capabilities.

  • i heard D5000 has the same sensor as the d300 im glad i got the D5k but i still favor the d300 for a future camera.

  • You helped me a lot my friend. Thanks for your review. I have read the Ken Rockwell's comparison before. Now I have just listened you and things are more clear now in my head. HAKAN

  • Thank you so much. your advise is the most practical.

  • Very nice, alot of good info. Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade from D70 to the D700 :)

  • hey guy which mm lens gives the wrap around circular effect?and which iso value is best for all round general photography,i have a d300 with 17-55mm lens is it ok for wedding photography?

  • @moedem

You bought a D300 and 17-55 but don't know if it can be used at weddings ?

    Answer on your question :

Yes it can be done , but you should buy a external flash and if possible a lens with more zoom. Like the 70-200 or 70-300. For weddings I would say the 70-200 because of it's F/2.8 aperture. If possible , the 24-70 F/2.8 would make the job even easier.

And the 'wrap around circular effect'

    Nikon DX Fisheye 10.5mm F/2.8

  • @Lucky13Entertainment cheers guy

  • hello!!

  • Thanks for the review....I learned a lot! Please keep posting more reviews!

  • You got a mistake...

D.X sensor (1.5 crop) doesn't make your object Closer or bigger. this is a common mistake.

to put things simple. the size of the object being pictured is not changing on either DX or FX. the F.O.V is what actually changes. DX see less 50% then FX sensor but not magnify 50% more.

  • @liorbenshabbat I know that. I am not that ignorant. but it makes it look as though you are getting closer and if you have a d700 and a d300 which both have 12 mega pixels and you use a 200mm lens the d300 is going to literally get you a closer shot as compared to the d700 which you need to crop down to 5 mega pixels to get the equivalent. I want to explain it in terms that make sense to a beginner.

  • Comment removed

  • @BeMoonlit they both can produce good black and whites.

  • @QQQQcon

Thanks,However, i still doubt since i can afford only one D700 or D300s, and i have reviewed your UTube u've 2cameras,& i think it's hard work, I personally want only 1 & the best camera which's variety used. My personal use to take picture everyday life, architecture , landscape, portrait, wedding, and insect not 4 selling. Can u recommend me to specific 1& what are accessories needed to produce good pictures like a professional do. Er how many lans 're needed and any thing else?...

  • @QQQQcon

can u recommend me to the best one-i like to take picture for everyday life, portraits, wedding, architectures building and temple, landscape, bird and animal, action picture too, and i plan to buy few good professional lens (what are they?)to achieve my previous goals. Can u guide me to needed accessories...My potential is D300s since video is included, but i heard that D700 more expensive since it combine D3 and D300 body...i still doubt...

  • canon 5dmk2 pawns this crappy nikon d700

  • @Xyb3rTeCh

Lets see how your beloved 5D MK2 works at sport events , motor/race car events or (very) dark environments. The D700 crushes the 5D MK2 at those places...

Bought my D700 and 24-70 F/2.8 yesterday and made over 350 photo's already. Great camera , but I keep my 70-300VR , 18-55 VRII , 50mm 1.8 and D3000 body. Only the 18-55 is DX and it costs 130 euro's second hand so not worth selling.

  • @Lucky13Entertainment 5D2 has better ISO ya moron. it can goes more than nikon crappy d700. though fps is an exception but who needs a fast fps in a full frame body? 5D2 is meant for studio and wedding shot, u stupid. think of the pixel of both camera. ohh wait... i'm a sony user. sony alpha rocks!

  • @Xyb3rTeCh

Lol , ISO noise levels are way lower on the D700 than on the 5DII.

Just google it and you will see.

Iso performace of the D700 is the best iso performance you can get these day's for that kind of money.

And the FPS are VERY important for sports and action photography.

3.9 is kind of pathetic for a 1800 euro camera...

  • @Lucky13Entertainment excuse me, the 5D2 is way much cheaper than the D700. this concludes that nikon never drop their price for their horribly overpriced gear. don't you know you don't really need that fps for sport shooting in a full frame? crop sensors is the way for sport shooting. its crop factor allows you to get more zoom from your lens.

  • @Xyb3rTeCh Uhm, no. Its not cheaper....

  • im going to shoot sports a lot, and obviously low light -

You think it's better to use the D300 at higher ISOs, or using the D700 and then cropping in?

    Right now I've got the D200 - and I don't have a 300mm 2.8, so I'll probably be using a 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4x to get that kind of reach.

  • @ajlepisto I would get the d700.

  • @ajlepisto Keep in mind that with a teleconverter like the TC-14E, you will lose a stop of light, so you will have to crank up the ISO a stop anyway. You will be using ISO3200 with the TC-14E on the D700 instead of ISO1600 without the TC-14E on the D300s. Teleconverters also have limited compatibility with lenses, but you should be fine if you're using the 70-200 2.8

  • @ajlepisto i agree. get the d700 for sure. less noise at higher ISO, and the sensor is larger so it collects more light such that your shutterspeed will increase - which u need for sports. Warning! using a teleconverter will increase your maximum aperture. for example, A 300mm f-4 with 1.4X teleconverter becomes a 420mm f-5.6.

  • I have a D90 with several lenses DX so should I get the D700 and have both?

  • @eman110858 I had your problem to when I went from dx to fx. In the end I sold all except my full frame lenses. I like just having one body.

  • great review, much appreciated, well summarized, think the D300s is the one for me !

  • great review, much appreciated, well summarized, think the D300s is the one for me !

  • Which one has better video recording, in terms of HD quality

  • @bananabanana neither of them have the ability to shoot video. the d300s does though.

  • can the d700 shoot in hard conditions like snow or heavy rain ?

  • @pomexable yes it can. but you dont want to get it soaking wet.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks buddy. That was really useful info.

I think i will go with the d300. Im using a Fujifilm S5 pro at the moment, which im not really happy with. Cheers.

  • D700's sensor is about 2.2 times larger than D300 not 1.5.

1.5 times matters only with focal length (not actual focal length though) and not sensor size.

    D700 is aprox 36x24mm (864mm2) and D300 is 23.5x16.7mm (392mm2).

  • I know I am taking about the length of each side of the sensor not the area, but yes you are right. I phrased it wrong in my video.

  • I love this guy-He is able to give so much information in a quick & concise way-Thank you!

After watching I am going to stick w/the d300-Thanks again!

  • great review!!! Best!

what about portrait work, what do you recommend? thank you!

  • d700 is what most people choose because of the high iso quality. depends whether you are shooting in low light or not.

  • how does the 300 look with 400-800 iso? thanks!

  • decent, 800 is better than 400. on the d700 it is loads better.

  • ur so clear, such a good teacher, cheers man!!!

  • interesting 'they should not be reviewed against each other' - erm what are you doing?

  • Thanks for a good review..! I just bought a D90 as my first DSLR (and I love it:-). Once I have learned using it though, I would love getting a D300s or the D700 as my next camera.

  • hey thanks for the video. Which Camera do you recomend for a budget under 1000 USD, that can take good picture but shoots HD videos and have a good performance shooting at night. Something like the Canon Mark III but cheaper

  • a nikon d90 is the best you can get

  • D5000. It's like a D90, but cheaper.

  • Thanks for this very informative review. you should really do more camera reviews and tutorials. Your stuff is some of the clearest and easiest to understand, because you dont assume too much prior knowledge.

  • DAHH LARSS lol

    great Review budd

  • That is singularly the best and most informative review I have ever seen!Very very easy to understand the pros and cons of each camera.Thankyou and Merry Christmas!!

  • Excellent review. Thank you, it was very helpful.

  • Hi

    nice vid man

but u forget to mention that the d700 has the 1.5 dx crop mode in it wich is great featuer

I have d700 and i really like it

and the d300 really one of the best dx camera on market

  • any experiences with the 35mm f/2?

  • If it's not nikon you got crap

  • i really need a telephoto lens but im a lil bit short on money i coulnt afford much more than 1500 dollars (AU dollars) at the moment and i need a preety decent apature what would you reccomend?

  • nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 is cheap and amazing

  • Good job. Rather basic comparison, but you hit all the important points.

  • Do you actually own a d700?

  • No, but I used the camera extensively at a local camera store before making this review. This is what I do for all my camera reviews.

  • Err... very simple car explenation:

    D300 -> D700

    is like

Skoda Oktavia stock -> Skoda Oktavia with Ferrari engine. :D

  • i have a d700. what all-purpose lens would you recommend? thx

  • There is no real decent all purpose lens for the nikon d700, the nikon 24-105mm lens is not that great.

  • What about the nikon 24-120mm? thanx

  • you would be wasting your money that lens is pretty bad. the only other lens that I can think of is the 24-70mm lens, which is amazing but is expensive.

  • well, I got a lot of recommendations on the nikon 24-70mm. now i've got three choices: the 24-70mm, 70-300mm or the 50mm 1.4G. I am planning to get two of these, but since there is a lot of money will be spent, I need to get recommendations first. Which ones would you recommend on the d700? Thanks

  • nikon 24-70 and 50mm are best

  • Oh yeah? I heard prime lenses are superior to zoom lenses so in that case what would be the best 3 primes for fx? I already have the 50mm 1.8, what would primes would best replace the 24-70?

  • Nikon 24mm f/2.8, nikon 50mm f/1.8, nikon 80mm f/1.8

  • THANKS!

by the way what tripod do you have or recommend?

  • I would recommend a carbon fiber tripod.

  • thank you for your advice.

    QoolQalmQollectedConor...

ha,haaa I couldnt make out your last name sounds like Quinn

  • flickr?

  • yes go to my main page and the link to my flickr is there in the description section.

  • kk sickkk :P

  • You are such a good and smat man, thank you, you explain it so simply and easy to understand!

  • good Review

  • Thanks mate. Always a good honest review from you. You just tell it how it is i feel..

  • it sounds like u cant even own a entry level DSLR and that ure jealous of this equipment. go get a life dude,

  • yOU R THE MAN!! EXCELENT REVIEW!! AWESOME DUDE...

I´M PHOTOGRAPHER AND GOING TO THE D700 ´CAUSE THE FX FORMAT. PERIOD

  • You helped me a lot to solve my doubts...

    Thank you!!

  • Overall, good expatiation, plus details information.

  • I really think this video is some how biased towards D300. With D700, the wider angle you get with a 50mm f1.4 lens is awesome, and you get the same DOF, means a perfect bokeh with a wider angle.

  • I dont think so. I would rather own the nikon d700 anyday.

  • Nice review......

Does the sensor on D300 and D90 the same?

    btw

I'm not a professional photographer but i luckily own

    D60,D70,D80,D90 and D700 hehehe

    (it's an EXPENSIVE hobby indeed)

  • yes they have the same sensor.

  • I own a D700 and with the 24-70mm NIKKOR on it... its out of this world. The quality of the photographs is on another level. D300 with the best lense cannot defeat D700 with an old lense on it. The full-frame advantage makes all the difference. Seriously. Out of this world quality.

  • isnt nikons widest lens 10.5 ? :o

  • It is a dx lens so it is really the equivalent of 16mm on a dx camera. Also it is a fisheye not a wide angle lens.

  • very good review. thanks

  • Thankyou. Realy helpfull and straight forward info. My heart is deffo set on a D300 soon as i have the cash saved...

  • i love ur videos..

I was wondering about the 1.5 crop factor on D300.

If you shoot 200mm focal length on D700 and crop the photo to have a 300mm focal length equivalent, will the picture quality be the same?

..because in the video, you mention that the D300 actually lets you should 300mm fl equivalent with focal length set to 200mm since you'd be multiplying 1.5.

  • If you crop the nikon d700 frame to match that of the nikon d300 you will only have 5 mega pixels left compared to the 12 mega pixels of the nikon d300. The image quality of the nikon d300 image would be much better.

  • awesome review!

i have the d300 and i love it!..

but you almost gave me a panic attack because you where bouncing the hole time....

  • ehm...i disagree with you about the lensbrands and quality thingy some nikon lenses actually do suck more than other lenses

  • I am sure there are some, but not many. I have used and owned many lenses including third party lenses and most of the time nikon lenses are better.

  • I would like to add to your comment about the mega-pixel comparison between the D300 and the D700. Yeah they are the same and the quality will not be different, however the larger sensor in the D700 will help your "composition" and take better photo's than the D300.

  • Unfortunartely you have not grasped the concept of the 1.5 crop. It does not technically bring the object closer or it does not change the focal length. A 200mm does not turn into a 350mm as the focal length is not affected.

Yes the sensor is different on a DX as opposed to a FX. The only thing that is different is that the sensor "crops" the image by 1.5 so therefore gives the impression that the lens itself is multiplied by 1.5.

    To conclude a 200mm lens remains a 200mm lens.

  • I know that I just dont state it in the review because it is easier to state that a 200mm focal lenth lens is really equivelant to 300mm, which it is. But yes I know it is a cropping factor and that the 200mm lens is still a 200mm lens.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge!!!

  • it sounds like you are inside (because of echo)

  • very very pro review :)

  • NIce work! I haven't seen your previous vid however I'd rather pay attention to you and rather not have music competing with your dialog.

  • Question:

Is there a way top disable the DX cameras from automatically "getting you 1.5x closer" to your subject?

  • No the camera has a dx sensor meaning that it is 1.5x smaller than a full frame sensor so you get 1.5x closer.

  • Gotcha! Thanks man.

  • Of course, technically speaking, the "gets you 1.5x closer" line is marketing propaganda. It makes you think you're getting something that's somehow better, right?. What you're actually getting is a 1.5x *reduced field of view*. You're not getting any closer. You just can't see as much of what you're looking at. That's why DX format camera viewfinders are so tiny to look through.

  • Nice job.

I have a D80, so I assume much of what you said about the D300 applies to it also.

Someday, I may buy the D700. For now, I'll hold on to the D80... and my money!

  • Great information...I knew this but you put it across really well...well done ;-)

  • QQQQcon, you have said that "film cameria is equivalent of full frame" so does it possess the same high level of performance in high ISO's?

  • That is a good question. I know that noise on film is different than digital. But not if it is better or worse. I use ISO 50 velvia film so noise is no problem for me.

  • Not quite. On film, ISO is determined by how many light sensitive particles are on the film, so if more are deposit onto the film the grainier it would be. However, heat on a CCD or CMOS will also trigger noise. So film has the advantage of giving lower noice at low ISO or long exposures. However, CMOS or CCDs will give better on high ISO/short exposures.

  • Oh, I see. Thanks.

  • I just want to ask:

I do shoot sports and planes (which... needs long lenses, that's all I have to say) and so because I am dreaming of a 70-200 in the future, maybe D300's for me. Not until I saw the D300 test shots that I shoot at ISO200, it is already starting to chunk a little which D700's will keep free of those chunks at ISO3200 but then it is so much more expensive (and 70-200 only gives 70-200 any
