i love hearing alternative versions of classics like this. i especially love 'em like this, stripped down and naked. raw, pete's brain child in its earlier, purer stage of growth. my generation needs a new pete townshend. hell, the world needs the who back too. i mean '66 - '76 style who. oh what i would give to see a live show from that time!!!!!
@bwc3821 while i think this would have been waaaaaaay better than any rock opera before it, i still think that Quadrophenia stands as one of the most consistently good albums, no THE MOST CONSISTENTLY GOOD ALBUM of all time, and Tommy paved the way for the Who's sound around this time, besides being a pretty great album.
i have a vague memory of the burt bacharac studio in new york that was used by the duo simon and garfunkle.. just a rare thought that simon and garfunkle produce more hits than this studio ever did. fuk me.
You should pick up the new book book "Won't Get Fooled Again: From Lifehouse to Quadrophenia". It goes into all the details about creation of the Lifehouse concept (and more).
What is now "Baba O'Reily" started out as a longer song called "Teenage Wasteland." Maybe that's what you meant. Anyway, I like Teenage Wasteland better than Bab O'Reily.
im a young fan of the who 13 in fact and i know not many people understood the idea of lifehouse and i know wot u mean cuz this is the same style of singing as no road romance
In't the only the album they never came out with. Sure there is some songs Entwistle never got to record on Endless Wire due to *cough*shenanigans*cough*, but I pretty sure this is the only one.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that Lifehouse is the only album that Townshend couldn't come finish. But I bet there are some songs on later albums that he wasn't able to come out with.
Well, on 2000 he performed a lot of Lifehouse material at Sadler's Well. He's selling a DVD at his website, and someone managed to upload some of those videos here in youtube.
Different mood than O'Reilly. Sadder melacholic feel rather than the prayer Daltrey turned it into. You also get a sense of being on the road with Pete an open free atmosphere. I've just got to get Lifehouse :) The ending is pretty strange, in a good way. My ears pricked up when I heard that whine. Oh for a one hour talk with Pete about his synths!!
Pete has made demos at home forever and plays drums, piano, guitar and sings. Most likely the bass was him too. He's the patron saint of home recordists!
@airomist this is against all those arrogant idiots who trot around acting like they never got a song title wrong before!
kiahlou100 5 months ago
Are we certain that The Who never recorded this song (it IS a completely different song than "Baba O'Reilly")???
12toedfeet 5 months ago
@12toedfeet surely. this was a production by Pete, only. Baba O'Riley was based in it, then, Pete "forgot" it. So we can say this is a dead music..
RogellParadox 3 months ago
Damn...why Pete, why couldn't you make Lifehouse a reality. Why not now?
camarorider67 6 months ago
Very interesting song but I'm glad Pete decided to record Baba O'Riley instead.

Love this tune- very Elton John quality circa Madman Across the Water- Pete's drums even sound like Elton's drummer, Nigel Olsen.

Wow, this is basically a completely different song.

Why, oh why, couldn't they have made this album? THIS would've stood up as the greatest rock opera ever.....not that crap Quad or Tommy.

I'm so glad Pete Townshend came out with the Lifehouse Chronicles. It seemed like such an interesting concept for a rock opera

Great guitar chord that comes out of nowhere at 6.27.
I wonder if Pete would play these live, trying to recreate the feel on these demos.
