@TijuanaSpliff if you put your hooks in from behind but then cross your feet to lock it in, your opponent can put one of his feet or ankles on top of your highest foot. Now all he needs to do is cross his own legs or just simply bear down on his own foot/ankle with the other leg. Therefore, it becomes his double leg strength against the small muscles, ligaments and many bones of your foot and eventually even your ankle if you do not tap out.
This is why good sub artists rarely cross foot hooks.
