Leonidas chose to die because of a prophecy that either Sparta or a Spartan king(there were always 2 at one time) would be lost in Persian hands. Leonidas chose his death.
the stories do not say anything about the spartans fightning this great war their own. it started with 300 spartans (yes) and 10.000 other greeks. but that doesnt matter in the films.. because the just want to make it good! and so did they!!!
oh and im not full greek(part japanese part white part american indian but mostly greek and japanese)is that why i have been getting crap from evryone
StikwithRik, i liked the Slow-motion during the Leonidas killing spree scene, but what i did not like was that most of the film was slow-motion. But everyone to their own cup of tea, i know some guys who absolutely love slow-motion.
You know what is sad? The Persian army was suppose to be one of the most feared and powerful armies (at the time) and than here comes the Spartans. Cool movie, I love the movie, the only things i did not like was the constant over-used slow-motion during battles and the CGI fake blood flying across the screen when people get stabbed or slashed. But still an awesome movie, especially on a HDTV.
you dont like that slow to fast motion stuff eh. I think its absolutely amazing. I can agree with you on the fake blood. it would be better if the blood would splat on the ground and stay there ya know. its almost like a video game. dissapearing blood lol
I know this is film but battles like this happened in the history of men and when I look at some "men" today I think they dont make 'em like they used to, some of these men feel hiding behind a gun or driving by shooting someone is being a "man" how bout a one on one hand to hand comparison of skills fight...men back then had lots of courage.
exactly..that's a nice point ..think about wars of those time and make a comparison with wars of today..fucking guns and planes and rockets and nuclear weapons..this is gay i think..battles like the one you see were something usual..and just think that this is just a film and u cannot understand the exact madness of those kills with blood everywhere and people screaming loud..imagine if u were there...just this..
the wars fought today are nothing like the wars fought in the past. Your right. These guys had balls, unlike today when when we fire shit from half a mile away.
@SuCKeRPunCH187 yeh these days we use guns which is pussyish cos all u do is pull a trigger and some1 is ded meanwhile wiv swords and spears u need skill
@Hereticalable yeah, carpet bombarding, then shooting from corners, in buildings win those that are faster in throwing grenates, you hear somethink? throw grenate, then shoot every think in room, thats very honorable. strategic buildings are destroyed by artillery and air force to their very foundations, mines, infrascopic view, snipering from high buildings, you cant compare that to past urban battles
@BojislavPushka Are we discussing which method of fighting is more "honourable" or which is harder? ALL combat is hard. Melee combat is different from ranged combat most certainly. But if you read the historical records of men running from the field, pissing and shitting themselves whilst waiting for cavalry to charge and flatten them them you'll see there is no honour in war at range or close up - and some of the most famous battles were full of people breaking the "rules".
@SuCKeRPunCH187 Go and enlist then, you ignorant fuck. Soldiers back in 480 B.C. didn't have to worry much about roadside bombs, did they? It's always funny to see people proclaim that military life is easy, while they sit back, fat and ignorant, in their comfy chairs. It's nice to respect what ancient combat was like, but never bring modern soldiers' courage into question, unless you can fucking back it up. Savvy?
all of us know about our history and is the most glorius history of the past...all of us know about the spartans and the macedonian macedonia is greek...if you want her come to take her we will never leave her...we will give our blood to protect her....
thank god for the SPARTANS for defending Greece and the whole of Europe...can you imagine if the Persians and Turks having conquered Europe where we would be now.
Europe would be Europastan, we would all still be in the dark ages, and all of europe would be under Sharia law right now if it weren't for the spartans.
@acdcpete I love this film as much as the next guy but the inaccuracies are obvious if you know history. For instance Spartans owned slaves, there were 300 spartans fighting along side thousands of fellow greeks many of whom were dismissed after they were outflanked. The director never meant for people to view his film as a faithful interpretation of the actual battle but of one audiences could cheer for the spartans as depicted in Mr. Miller's graphic novel.
rofl! where r u now?! wtf r u doing now?! ur theory is wrong! we must respect spartans of course but
lets see some facts: greek science is influenced by mesopotamian, phoenician, egyptian science even if greek scientists, philosophers were very smart. i think if there were no persian empire, there would be no empire based on greek (mainly athenian) culture! greeks had slaves and were not that perfect as what we see in this STUPID movie! .... read some history !
@cleverlybideIt yea but america is unfluenced architexture wise and art wise from greek, and yea alot of countries had slaves, and they are portrayed in this movie how they really were in real life. Slaves did the work and all spartan men were warriors. Sparta was a small, powerful, aggresive country and thats how they were portrayed, and in the end there enimies out numbered them wiping them out. But they earned to be portrayed like this because regardless they were amazing warriors
@acdcpete Typical idiot neo-con. The Turks conquered the whole of Greece and much of eastern Europe, in fact right up to Vienna. Have you heard of the Ottoman Empire? Europe still exists, doesn't it? Another thing, much of ancient Greece was in Asia and North Africa (Turkey and Egypt). Those places were more connected to Greece than Europe was.
im proud to be greek i think on my dad side of my family i have spartan roots but spartans are not as invinible as they think they were they really lost more batlles then they won but still greatest warrior
Geographically they officially divide the earth into 8 regions. The Middle East is one in itself. The Persian empire expanded into Asia, thus they had Asiatic culture and troops in their empire. With your definiton, the Middle East can easily be categorized as Africa. The Middle East is never referred to as Asia either.
yeah? your point? Russia and Turkey are the only countries that can't be defined to a specific continent. The middle east is a part of Asia. You know, "Asia Minor".
if they broke formation then the spartans would open a can of whoop-ass on them. thats because most persian infantry wore no armor and even trying to get pass the spartan shield...it's just so big! it's like fighting a tank with a rifle....it just cant be done! tank > rifle
The shield is meant to be used in a phalanx, you moron. An individual spartan far outclassed a Persian, but there strength was in the phalanx. No warrior, no matter how strong, can withstand a continuous attack. That's why that formation was built- to hold off with minimal effort. If they broke this, they would have been slaughtered just like in the end. No formation- massacre.
ha wats your problem?? i already know whats the phalanx's strength is, but the persians wore no armor and as you know the spartans were heavily armored so i guess you can do the math from there. even if they broke ranks the shield would protected them (do you know how big the shield was?!). plus idk if u know this but i already knew that a warrior cant fight beyond his strength. in the real battle the coalition of greek soliders took breaks between fighting. jeez calm yourself
You're a moron. No matter how heavily armed or armored you are, you will fall if you're busy on the front and flanked on three sides. That's what would have happened had the phalanx broken. I'm simply stating the facts. The Spartans would have fought well. But when you're outnumbered and outmanuevered, you can only last so long.
My comment is based solely on this film, not history. In actuality, the Spartans didn't break the phalanx. That's why they survived so long.
ahh i see our points come from two different perspective then. ok then now i understand. and please why you call me a moron? i didnt offend you or anything. every time i reply doesnt mean im going against what your saying and every time i dont want to start an argument.
Depends on how you define a "good student". I do enough research beyond listening to the indoctrinating professors or wikipedia. A lot of people these days have forgotten a certain word- the LIBRARY!
its not just used in the phalanx, your the moron, the spartans used the shield in every battle situation there was, not just in tha phalanx. so what your saying that if they are not in the phalanx they just run around and fought with no shield? and they lost in the end because they were betrayed in the end by the guy that looks like you. thats the only reason they lost. if they werent outflanked from the rear, if you never told them, they wouldve easily won,
You really are an idiot. If they broke formation, their lines would have been opened to Persian incursion. And I never said the shield is used exclusively in the phalanx, but that it protects from one direction. The lines broken, the Persian incursion, and a surrounded regiment means a massacre. I know the only history you've gotten is from your left-wing high school teachers and this movie.
achilles, achilles was the best fighter ever, leo just had all heart, all the 300 warriors were a decent of achilles they say soo yeah..thats what i think
i like how you guys comment on this video about the armor, this movie is based on a novel dudes , a fkn comic, it has some historic accuracy like where the fight happened and all but thats wer it ends, wake up

goneljefe 2 years ago
its tough to say, but history will tell you achillis was a better warrior. LEonidis was all heart, achillis wasnt
TheeElTigre 2 years ago
achilles, achilles was the best fighter ever, leo just had all heart, all the 300 warriors were a decent of achilles they say soo yeah..thats what i think

Achilles is half of a god. son of peleas, an immortal godess.
Achilles kicks leonidas ass in my opinion..
according to homers works, achilles is the best warrior in ancient greece.
Spartans are decent of achilles.
