Hi Ben... I was thinking of getting either a special 20 or a blues harp. which one has a better sound for blues? and for good bending and stuff? Thank you!
First of all thanks for the videos and demonstrations !!!! very nice info!
Ive been playing for 3 months only on the key of C. I'm wondering and cant decide which key should I try now. Which key would you recommend to be my second one to practice, which keys do you think are the basic ones ( A, C G , E?? ) finally whats your favorite Hohner harmonica over all?
Thanks in advanced for your time and knowledge.
Greetings from South America and looking forward to your response.
@charcuterocbog Well I think C, G, A, Bb, D is the way to go. Hohner Thunderbirds are the best I ever tried but very expensive. Maybe go for the Sonnyboy's Special from SonnyboysMusicStore dot co dot uk - they have a boxed set of 7 with all those keys included and the whole lot is cheaper than one Thunderbird. You get what you pay for! Ben
Mr. Ben do you have any demos for Lee Oskar Major Diatonic harmonicas? i wanna know whats the difference between those two.. still cant decide what to buy :)
@benhewlettuk is there a significant difference between lee oskar major diatonic harmonica and MB special 20? Ive seen some of your videos and cant find lee oskar brand demos.. :)
My poor Hohner Silverstar just died and i just can't decide which harmonica i should buy. I'm thinking about Special 20, Marine Band, Big River and Blues Harp (all in C). Everyone says that Special 20 is best but in my country it's more expensive than the others and i have problem with cash, so which would you recommend most?
@xossie forgiveness that disrupts, Dan Aykroyd used a Lee Oskar, the key is not the change I guess: P, if not understood what I meant because I'm using the google translator, sorry haha ...
Great review! I'd never have considered buying a D flat harmonica, but you make them sound so good! I'm wary that a talented player such as yourself can make any harmonica sound good though. Would you recommend a D flat for playing blues?
@benhewlettuk thanks for your answer Ben! and yes, i heard very good things about MB deluxe and the MB crossover too....but im a beginner and looking for an affordable blues harmonica on A. So, if you had to choose between special 20 or blues harp, which would you take?
I heard better comments about special 20, but i like the wood body of the blues harp. Please help!
Wow you are just great. Thanks for showing us the harmonicas (was hoping to see one in C but i guess you cant get everything). Oh and, i was really impressed with your playing, especially in the end when you had it in your mouth, made me laugh a little :)
Hi all. I am about to buy a harmonica. I know that as a beginner I shoud buy a C key harmonica....BUT I fell so much in love with the sound of a D-flat Special 20 that i heard recently that I really would love to buy that one instead. What do y'all think about it?. Will it make a big difference if a buy a d-flat S20 instead of a S20 in C ?. I heard that D-flat in a youtube vid called "Hohner Special 20 demonstration" by Ben Hewlett.
I've found that harmonicas are individual creatures. Same key, make, and model and they can sound different. Case in point: I have a B special 20 that is awesome and a B marine band that is stiff and sucks. And vice versa with other examples. I also found that how a harp sounds out of the box is how it sounds for life , no loosening up or getting better with age. Also I have 2 C blues harps hohner that sound very different, one sounds much sweeter.
@christophemillertime You should try different harps and see which you like. Lee Oskar is a personal friend so I gotta say I love his harps - especially the Natural and Harmonic minors! Ben
I have a question I have a lee oskar in c. I want to get one of these in a new key but I want a g or a. Which one should I get next? Which is deepest between c g and a? Thanks
dude, your playing is... i dont know... TOO GOOD!!! when you shoved that harmonica in your mouth, i was crackin up too. i think i might get one (im a beginner, so i hope they are decent)
Listen to some of his other stuff before you judge. You must be pretty spectacular yourself there @he214ab considering you shed such low opinions on others. Let's see what you got...........
@he214ab You are right but I have been studying harmonica for 25 years and will keep on studying a bunch more - there will always be people better than me and less skilled than me!
I've been playing blues harp for a month now and I bought a cheap one to see if I would like it. I loved it right away (even though I couldnt play anything), and I was wondering if it would be better to upgrade to a Hohner Blues Harp or anything else with a wood body or if i should just get a good quality harp with plastic body like a Big Biver Harp.
your help would be apreciated (sorry about spelling)
i just posted a "crappy" video about the turbo lids, shortly i'll be posting a better one when my new camera arrives next week, so you can watch the bad video for now and see what you think.
did you modify / tune-up any of those 20's that you gig with in any sorta way? i feel like they sound alot better than the ones i have, but im not sure if its just because my technique sucks or not haha.
I don't recall doing any mods - maybe regapping a little, but they're quite good right out of the box I think. Try recording yourself and listening back - you might sound better than you think! Good luck, Ben.
