  • Then once the exhaust valve closes, the piston downstroke (still being driven by the flywheels) pulls in a mix of air/fuel from the only place it can.....the intake valve....which has only a weak spring holding it lightly closed the rest of the time?

  • Hi, Gotta' love those Fendeer Strats. Yes, thanks for the clarification on valve closings. Good job! Have a super day, Mel

  • So when the exhaust valve is open, all it does is suck in fresh air with no fuel from the tank, right? So it uses little or no fuel while coasting?

  • Hi, That's true. Later, Mel

  • Great job, MegaMel.

  • Hi, Thank you so much. I'm in Punta Arenas now with Sandie and we leave for Ushuaia at 9 AM. Have a nice day, Mel

  • Are hit and miss engines inefficient? Are they still sucking in fuel while it's missing?

  • Hi, Yes they are efficient. The exhaust valve is held open during the "Miss" cycle so fuel is not pulled into the cylinder due to no vacuum being created to pull air/ fuel thru the Carb (actually it's a mixer on those engines - much simpler than a Carb). Have a super day, Mel

  • LOVE this, MegaMel! Perfect combo of funny and educational.

    I'm a fan - CUT!

  • Hi, Wow! You made my day. Thanks a bunch! Have a super day, Mel

  • Love the sound of those engines...thanx for the vid!

  • Finally someone who can make sense of it all!

  • Hi, Thanks a bunch for your note. Glad you enjoyed the Vid. Mel

  • Very cool.

  • hi mel, great to see someone so enthusiastic about our hobby! I am in the uk and love the american open crank engines. I have a 6hp stover RX hit and miss among other engines, just wish there was more of them over here! best regards Jim.

  • Hi, Thanks a bunch for your note. Yes, the open crank engines are way cool. That's great that you have the Stover. Have a super day, Mel

  • Hi I am in Ireland and have a lot of engines inc most of a 6 man amanco looking for guys that may be able to help to get this beast running

  • Te la Compro $

  • He was probably drunk during the vid

  • are you smokin joints?

  • How do you shut it off?

  • We just disconnect the battery from the coil which stops the spark. Have a super day, Mel

  • Hey Mel how do you stop the intake valve from opening on the 'miss' cycles? i can see that the exhaust valve is open which doesn't allow the build up of compression but i could see that the intake valve was not operating during the miss cycles

  • Hi, The intake valve is a simple "poppet valve" that is pulled open by vacuum created on the pistons intake stroke. The exhaust valve is opened by a cam but a centrifugal force mechanism holds the exhaust valve open. Weights attached to the flywheel move out to hold the exhaust valve open. Looking at the engine is the best way to see how it works. Since there's no compression (or vacuum during intake stroke), the intake valve doesn't open during the "miss" cycles. Have a super day, Mel

  • This is my favorite video of a hit and miss engine by far. At first I thought this guy was going to be some idiot rambling about how he got drunk and shot a bunch of stuff but hes a pretty respectable guy, just real energetic. Its awesome to see someone so enthusiastic about this stuff too. I think these engines are so interesting.

  • Really cool guy

  • That started easy! In was watching some guys trying to start a really BIG one on a trailer. The fought with it for hours, but couldn't get it running.

  • Hi, Thanks for your note. We start the Witte by turning the flywheels backwards. We get a good charge of gas/air in by turning it over forwards a few turns with the compression released, then turn it backwards. As the compression builds on the backward stroke, the spark is still ocurring all the way from TDC until about halfway thru the power stroke so we get ignition when the piston is about halfway up the cylinder to TDC. We use a "buzz coil". That's enough power to get it running. Mel

  • very good explanation... i love hit and miss moters!

  • hit...nope i missed ya...let me try again..lol

  • Great description and entertaining delivery Megamel!

    100%

  • Hi, Glad to get your feedback. I hope to get a couple more Hit & Miss engines running this summer and put them on You Tube. Have a super day, Mel

  • He's got some passion, man, and it's great!

  • Jim Leahy from trailer park boys has a brother!

  • excellent video!! I wasn't drunk when I made this.... lmao

  • Hi, Thanks for the feedback. We have quite a few more Hit & Miss engines that we want to get running and I'll do some videos on some of those. Have a super day, Mel

  • cool man i always wanted to se how one of these babies were fired up

  • Hi, Thanks for your note. Another way to start one is to roll it thru top dead center using a compression release. They are a lot of fun. Have a wonderful New Year, Mel

  • u r awesome!

  • Hi, Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. Have a super day, Mel

  • excellent description,hes sure funny.

  • Hi, Thanks for your nice feedback. I appreciate it. Have a super day, MegaMel

Now i understand the working procedure of the motor! Thanks!

    Go on like that!

  • Hi, Thanks for the nice feedback. I'll try to keep making videos that might be useful or entertaining. Have a super day, MegaMel

  • this guy has so much energy, i want to see him explain how other things work

  • Hi, Thanks for your note. I´ll try to explain how some other stuff works in the future. I´m spending a month in Bolivia now. Later, MegaMel

  • Thanks for the details!

  • That is some trick shit sir! Thank you for posting!!!

  • i think you were either suprised it started first time and also you didnt break your hand when it started! ive seen many a time that happen!

  • Hi, Yes, I was surprised that it started first time. I try to keep my hands on the outside of the flywheel when starting. I don't want a broken hand. Thanks for your note. Have a super day, MegaMel

  • I give you props for two things. This video, very informational. Your attitude, you are so excited about this engine. Five stars.

  • Hi, Thanks a bunch for your feedback. I've found that being excited about life and having fun/ having a positive attitude makes me happy. I'm 67 now and today I went water-skiing on Pueblo Reservoir and was jumping over the boat wake on one ski. Fun! Have a really great week, MegaMel

    keep the vids coming.

  • Hi Blackbill44, Thanks a bunch for your note. My buddy Bryan and I have several Hit & Miss engines down in Beulah. We love the Witte and run it regularly. They were the normal power source "back in the day". We don't know what this one was used for. They are a lot of fun to work on and run. Have a wonderful day, MegaMel

  • Too cool... Can I hang out with you guys?

  • Hi, Thanks for the feedback. Yes, we have a lot of fun. I just came home from Beulah where my buddy Bryan and I brought a utility bucket truck up to his place and we jumped in the bucket and rode fifty feet up above the truck. Fun! Have a super day, Mel

  • Nice motor you have! I once saw those live. Sound of em producing is amazing.

    Good luck with your motor!

I'm glad you enjoyed the Witte video. I have two other videos on Hit & Miss engines. If you click on "See All MegaMel" or something like that, you can see a listing of all 41 of my YouTubes.

    Have a super day, Mel

  • your funny explaining about witte my dad has a 2hp one but it dint run good so he sold it these american engines sell god in england

  • Hi Stirlingsteamboy08,

Thanks for your comments on my video about then Witten Hit & Miss motor.

    Have a wonderful day, MegaMel

  • now you guys should do the operation of a throttle governed engine. nice witte by the way. ive got a smaller 2hp witte throttle governed i need to get running again.

  • Hehe, I like this guy. Thats a nice little engine you got there, starts first turn! Nice way of showing the principals of hit and miss engines.

  • Hi RustedBovine,

Thanks for your comment on Little Blue. I'll do a few more YouTubes on some other Hit and Miss engines soon.

    MegaMel

  • Hi RustedBovine - 2nd reply from MegaMel,

Guess I'm not really awake yet. Your comment was on the Witte, not "Little Blue". Thanks again.

    MegaMel

  • Sounds good. I look forward to seeing them. These engines seem to be gaining some interest lately among the green environmentally friendly movement, because of their fuel efficiency and their ability to run on anything. Maybe do a video aimed at that?
