the whole test is to determine if we will be able to successfully use the water that is found on the moon if we set up a station there. The point of a station is give is a better launching point for future missions to mars and beyond. If we find ENOUGH water beneath the surface....it would be very useful for future planning. An impact on the surface is cheaper and fast and more practical then drilling.

it hasn't always been in earths orbit so you don't know when or where it's craters were created. the moon is hollow, thus it is lighter than it would be if it was solid. some people think the moon was made the same time as earth, false. none of the moon matter appears within the earth.

NASA has it on their site that its a 2000kg bomb that will release 10 Billion Joules of Kinetic energy. If it was a nuke you would immediately know because the flash would be incredibly bright. In comparison to the size of the moon this really is nothing. The diameter of the moon is roughly that of the distance from New York to LA. The moon's history is loaded with impacts by objects releasing 100's even 1000's x's more power, and its still in orbit.
