In the Sallekha Sutta (Majjhima-Nikaya sutta 8), the Buddha makes it clear that an adept who is stuck in the mud cannot help free someone else from the mud. One has the obligation, if they wish to save others, to at least save themselves first.
Living a simple, humble life is part of the Way. As mentioned in the movie "just talking about it is no good. Without meditation, discipline and wisdom its nonsense to think you'll be liberated from birth and death".
