@714ponyboy you missed my point entirely. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was written by DB and has that ABB "SOUND". To me, Ramblin' Man doesn't. I hate that song!
thank you for posting this video. i can't believe i haven't seen this before. dickey just hosted charlie daniel's induction into the nashville musicians hall of fame last night (10-12-09) and he joined in with the cdb and played southband. great to see that charlie is still a good friend and fond of the ramblin man that "people down in georgia come from near and far to hear richard betts pickin' on that red guitar"

I don't disagree with you on the keeping the band together thing, but I still think his best songs were before Duane died. Jessica & Southbound are good songs, but what about Blue Sky, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed & Revival? Ramblin Man to me is a Dickey Betts song, not an Allman Brothers song. I absolutely HATE that song! As of this point in time, I think they are definitely a better group with Warren & Derek. All this is my opinion and I guess it's Gregg's too... :)
@nashtndawg your are right..."rambling man" was written by dickey betts, so it is a dickey betts song; recorded and performed by these so called allman "brothers"..."melissa" was written by gregg allman, and therefore, a gregg allman song; recorded and performed by these so called allman "brothers". if it is to be classified as an allman brothers song, by your astute observation it would HAVE to be written by duane and gregg allman (the "allman BROTHERS", hence the title of the band). NONE EXIST
Actually, the Brothers broke up in 1977 (I think) and Dickey formed Great Southern. I think it was due to some sort of legal hassle (someone got busted). Dickey did two albums with GS before the Allman Bros reunited.
He wrote some good songs when Duane was still alive, but after that he pretty much sucked! Jessica is a great song, but Ramblin' Man is HIDEOUS!! The ABB have two better guitarists now....
@nashtndawg i suppose you think the "allman and woman" album is NOT hideous...i'm sorry, the MR. CHER and woman" album...bein' from assville is evident...
@nyrangers1954 Dickey was an original member, not 1971. Duane got Jaimoe first, Berry Oakely on bass second, Dickey on lead guitar third. Then they decided they needed a more rock sounding drummer and got Butch Trucks to play WITH Jaimoe who was more jazz. Last to join was Gregg Allman who came in March of 69
@boblackey1 The ABB broke up in 1976 due to Gregg's drug bust and having to go to court against an ABB roadie, but got back together in 1978 when Dickey talked Butch into working with Gregg again. Then in 1982 they stopped playing again because of finanical and record company problems, firing Jaimoe in the process. They did occassionally play some special shows until 1989 when they went on a complete tour.
@boblackey1 The 1989 tour was only to support the Dreams boxset as Gregg and Dickey both had their own bands but they liked it so much they stayed together and in 2000 Gregg and Butch were going to leave if Jaimoe didn't vote with them to exit Dickey over business, drug and temper problems. Now band is good, but not to have Duane AND Dickey playing ABB guitar solos and doing Dickey's songs is too much for me. I don't go anymore.
More thoughts on this episode. Charlie Daniels was still a year or so away from huge success with the Devil..Georgia. He seems sort of an anonymous sideman on here. I don't think Elvin performed with his band either. There were other guests on the show that filled the time - Pretty sure Genesis with Peter Gabriel was one, can't remember the others. Thanks for the memories, maybe you can post some more.
Charlie was hardly anonymous. Bonnie, Elvin, and Charlie were sitting in - nothing planned before everyone took the stage.
The show aired in the summer. I don't remember other acts (I might be able to look it up), but there was a 15 minute tribute to Willie Nelson as a songwriter and also as part of the "outlaw" country movement.
Its been 30 years since I last saw this. This Midnight Special was hosted by Dickey Betts and Great Southern with Dangerous Dan Toler. Although the details may be a little foggy, I remember being disappointed with this show. I don't think Betts played any material from Great Southern and he had just released Atlanta's Burning Down, which went to nothing on the charts after this. I dont believe Charlie Daniels played or sang anything other than the fiddle on this song and maybe another jam song.
This was broadcast in 1978. Dickey Betts did host the show backed by the Great Southern personnel from Atlanta's Burning Down (ABD). Besides this jam, Great Southern performed one song - Good Time Feeling from ABD. There was also another jam that Elvin sang, I forget the song.
grinchmonkey-I know the quality of the video is bad and it's hard to see, but he clearly breaks his E string. At 4:45, Bonnie Bramlett elbows Elvin Bishop and motions to Dickey about his broken string. Observe...
What's even more remarkable about this performance is that Dickey breaks his E string at 3:28, keeps right on playing without missing a beat, then goes over to show Dan Toler that he's broken his string, so the twin harmonies will be played one step lower than usual! I love it!
I watched the whole thing and didn't notice, so I went back and looked at the time you stated. What you see isn't his E-string gleaming in the light there, it's actually the drummer's stick right behind Dickey. He doesn't break a string. Listen to the notes he plays and pick up a guitar - you need the E-string to play the notes he plays in the position his hand is in.
Awesome clip , I've seen the allman bros . about 10 times ,and Dickey & GS another 3 times , the last time Dickey and Dan Toler shook my hand , Dickey belongs in the top 10 of the best guitarist in Rock & Rock , since Duane died , his( Dickey's) songs have been the staple of their ( ABB ) concerts , nobody went to those shows to see Gregg sit on his ass, they went to see Dickey , center stage, choking out those notes on that " red guitar" !!!!! Long Live DICKEY BETTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this song. Dickey Rocks. My band did this in our school talent show. I love Charlie Daniels, too.. Saw him recently in Rome, Ga.
But, whatever guy tried to play slide in this nearly made me puke.. Why would Dickey, who used to play alongside Duane Allman, let something that awful onstage?
Yea,that's Dickey Betts,....His group had the hir "ramblin man"..that is the equal to that comment.Elvin is an unbelievably talented bluesman and axeman.Check out "Travelin Shoes".If I want polished I'll listen to some garbage like Rush.
@logjammers elvin bishop should have been asked to join great southern...instead of "dangerous" dan toler...he is "dangerous" to guitar playing( if thats' what it is he attemps...)
Crawl back under that rock you came from! Dickey played some of his greatest performances throughout the 1990's with the ABB which included a Grammy for best instrumental and other nominations. His ousting in 2000 for drugs was nothing but a lie used by the other members to solve their business disputes with him. Dickey has been touring every year ever since, released 2 albums, and he still jams for hours even though he is now 63...Long live the Ramblin' Man!
Does that make it o.k. to screw over someone who has always been by your side, watching out for your best interest, crying with you, pulling your ass out of the dutch your whole sorry life. 'Cause that's what Dickie has done for that a-hole. But I'm just old fashioned that way, I guess.
