I like to fill them with water, plug them up well, and do "bear hug" lifts from ground to standing, getting them to shoulder, squatting with them in front rack position or on shoulder, curling them, snatching them, cleans jerks, whatever really... oh and of course pressing them. You can do a classic routine of 10-12 of each movement one time or add them to your normal workout with a 5x5, 4x6 or something like that. You could fill them with whatever you have, shot, sand rocks, pebbles whatever.
My gym is quite lame, 3 smith machines and no squat racks. This video has been very helpful I would have never thought to do it this way and today I've finally been able to do back squats again.
That's the Steinborn lift. It's what people did before there were squat racks and and when the weight was too heavy to Clean. If you take your barbells outside to train like I do my Globe Barbells, then it's the only way to get them up to the shoulder

What are you doing? Why don't you clean it up, or unrack it from the power rack?
