yea the lid definitely came off...

the older js550's had a rubber strap that ran the length of the hood to keep it secured nice. i have no idea why superjets rickters BOBs and newer Kawsakis have this latch system....seems like a good way to lose a whole ski b/c you skimped out and made a plastic latch

Looks like the lid came off the engine compartment when it hit the water. That's the yellow piece off to the left side as he swims up. Probably has a bit of the foam cut out for mods which helped it sink
