  • Fantastic art, love it very much - what brand of pastels do you use?

Thanks in advance from a real fan

  • @inesgiers Thank you for your kind comments and for subscribing to my site.

  • @inesgiers The pastel pencils I use are called Pitt and are made by Faber-Castell.

  • Mr Colin, you are a fantastic artist........ I am inspired every time I watch you. My interest and speciality are animals, I've noticed you do not blend as you go along with your paintings, and the fur is so realistic. My question is therefore...........do you ever blend with your finger, or is it not necessary?

After I've 'blended', I find the paper to smooth, and cannot seem to get the top layer of pastel to grip. What do I do. Also, sometimes a picture looks 'muddy'.

    Please help.

    Thanks

  • @debbiesanimalartwork I very rarely use my finger to blend fur in with animals. You could try erasing some of the pastel you have applied. I would suggest that you watch as many youtube clips as possible, all the answers are there.

    Best regards Colin.

  • What a great piece , thanks a lot Mr. Colin for your tips but excuse me , can i mix pastel pencils with color pencils on the same piece . .. ?

  • Respond to this video...Thank you for your kind comment. Pastel pencils and normal coloured pencils have very different properties and will not blend together successfully.

    Best regards Colin.

  • Absolutely fantastic work! Lots of great tips, and delivered with a relaxingly avuncular tone as well. I draw cats for my ACEOs - but not with your level of success (partly due to my use of maddening colored pencils).

Must get some Faber-Castells, and fast....;o)

  • @AnnihilatingAngel - Thank you for your kind comments.

    Best regards Colin.

  • Colin this is great, cheers it has helped a lot

  • Thank you for your kind comments.

    Regards Colin.

  • Colin: you are my hero. What paper you prefer?

  • Thank you for your kind comment. I use the 160 gram sand coloured Igres paper for my work.

    Best regards Colin.

  • after your done the picture what do you do to keep it from smudging

  • I place the picture in a see through transparent bag of folder, it will keep from smudging that way .

    Regards

    Colin.

  • thats making it look easy

  • You would be surprised that most people can acheive a good standard of skill using these pencils after a short while. Thank you for your interest.

    Regards

    Colin

  • thx so much!! :D I´ve always cursed myself for not being able to draw a cat´s fur correctly! :´( must use this "tutorial" someday! ^ ^

  • This is really amazing!

I love to draw and I have recently discovered that I was able to(about 4 months ago).I don't take any classes.

I want to draw fur in a realistic way and I couldn't figure out how until I saw this video!

    You truly are a genius!

I wish that when I'll be a little older,to be a great artist like you!

Continue your great work dear Colin!

  • Thanks for the info' you shared. I'll have a look for those pencils. Cheers...Pat.

  • Please....What kind of pastel pencils do you use? Are they oil pastel pencils? Thanks for any info and recommendations you can offer. I'm a beginner artist and have only posted 2 pastel pieces using oil pastels on Bob Davies' Forum.

  • Hi Simonsays444

I use Faber-Castell Pitt pastel pencils for all my work. They are chalky and not oil based and will erase esily unlike the oil pastels. There are other makes of pastel pencils but the Faber ones are the best.

    Kind regards Colin.

  • Colin PLEASE PLEASE PLEEASE tell me what kind of PAPER you often use when drawing with pastels! THANK YOU :D YOUR GREAT! :D

  • Thank you for your kind comments and your interest. The pastel paper I use is 160 gram Ingres and is sand coloured, I always used the same paper and colour for all subjects. The tooth in the paper is fine enough to be covered but also can be used for texture if required. Best wishes Colin.

  • Very nice job!

  • Thank you for your kind comments.

    Regards Colin.

  • Hi AlonzoandJemima

Thank you for your kind comments. IT is not possible to use normal coloured pencils to produce the same effects as I have with the pastel pencil. You are right in as much as one of the reasons is that they blend into each other so well. Might be worth you giving them a try.

    Best regards

    Colin.

  • I've being trying to learn how to draw the fur of a cat for ages with pencil. I was wondering if you could do one like this in normal pencil? Anyway, this work is amazing!!

And it even looks like it blends!! So realistic!!

  • Hi baldudakli86

Thank you for your kind comments. The paper I am using is sand coloured Ingress paper 160 gram. Good luck with your work. Best regards Colin Bradley.

  • hey you are amazing!! i can draw verry good but it's always non-fiction characters and when i draw a cat or something it's always the important lines i draw but i can never do the details like fur. i found out that working with pastel is great for details like fur, am i wrong? anyway so i want to start working with pastel but can i ask you witch paper you use? is it pastel paper?

  • again Colin...just magic...observation and skill

  • Great video! I tend to have a rough time with fur!

  • Thankyou Colin this is really helpful you make it look so easy I can't wait till my pastel pencils arrive
