I am not sure that I want to know anyone who does not like Slightly Stoopid, I certainly do not want to know anyone who does not like/love SUBLIME....and that's different than SUBLIME w/Rome...dont get it twisted. If ever given an opertunity ask Kyle how the name "SLIGHTLY STOOPID" came about...it will clear up all this who wrote what shit...can we promote the sound??? and leave it at that.
this song was actually made by slightly stoopid..they were discovered by brad nowell from sublime when they were still in highschool in 1995. They recorded this song after they got signed to skunk records. Brad Nowell did a guest apperance in this song and released it on their box set 'everything under the sun' So actually....brad nowell and sublime covered it. Slightly stoopid has no intentions of being like sublime..they just make the same type of music.
@nikkilyn54 why would he want to sound like sublime? They have never tried to be sublime in any way and they would be lame to try and be like sublime. But thats the thing, they are themselves and their own sound and thats what makes these guys incredible
slightly stoopid im sorry but ripped sublime right out of the stone love reggae style ok and pepper because sublime doesnt compare but rip bradley noel

Lunchit i completely agree! obviously there not sublime but back in the day bradley himself thought these guys were bad mothers and signed them to skunk records. so if you talk shit about slightly stoopid your downing brad's ideals on music and what life is about. This song prophet was orginally slightly stoopid's song, brad bud and eric of sublime covered it and added a few touches of their own. you gotta give it up to slightly stoopid, there musical genius, and brad saw that too.
Anyone notice the first verse sounds a little like the Tim Hardin Song "If I Were A Carpenter" which has been recorded by many artists including Bobby Darin, Johnny Cash & June Carter! Bradley's version is different from SS's and all three songs are great - compare - youtube search "If I Were A Carpenter" by either Tim Hardin or Bobby Darrin. I love it! - "Gonna take everything she's got to offer and keep it for myself" is such a great original lyric!
Slightly did this first in fact Miles' (lead singer) Mom invited bradley to his house one day and miles showed brad this song and brad asked to play bass on it and thats how it all started
Say ace there is a little more to the story than that but what you have said is basically right. Miles Mom (Laurie) is my wife. The story of how Bradly and "slightly stoopid" met is an interesting one I'm surprised that it is not told more often.BTW do I know you?

Ain't No Prophet is a cover of Prophet by Slightly Stoopid but slightly changed, interpretted by Bradley. It's how he felt the song in him so he changed it a bit, like all artists do who do covers. They put their own touch to it. I don't know where this guy is gettin the Ziggens from.
john042o, i aint no prophet was on the 1998 bums lie psycho semantic police cd which released the unreleased material from sublime, and some of their best stuff. this is brads original song. get your facts straight one love

Bradley Nowell Signed SS anyways so whether they covered the song or not it doesnt matter and when you go to a "genre" your bound to have similar sounding songs but atleast SS will change it up every now and then.
NO It doesnt matter who did it!!! Thats Miles and if you ask him yourself he will tell you that SS owes everything to Sublime...This band has 8 cd's and dvd and have been on the road for 15 years...
It dosent matter who wrote it, it's a good song. Sublimes version was incomplete, and not as well done as Slightly's. Either way, its a great song, and they both did a good job!

Actually it is a song the Miles wrote and Brad tried to do a recorded version of. Miles has two verses and Brad only has one. Brad also brings it into a Bobby Darrin style (also done a duet w/Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash) but Miles performances it the way it was originally written (by him)
thats the last thing slightly stoopid's trying to do. yeah bradley's version kicks the shit out of this, but they used to jam together all the time so they have every right to perform this song in bradley's memory
yeah i heard the sublime version of this song...out of the set box "everything under the sun". brads voice was amazing in their version...i like slightly stoopid's shit too...although they dont have the same vibe as sublime...they have another feel to offer, but i dont think their goal is to be another follow up to sublime...they have their own shit that sounds great...i respect them unlike other people. i like that easy vibe shit... i dont care who makes the music...
Lol Miles never wrote this song loser. This song has beem whored over to singers as bad as RE4 has been to systems. Sublime sang this song as far back as 1993 and many others singers before them redhueod. Very good version of the song though.
My wife,Laurie,Miles mom.Believes he was 18 as near as she can remember when he wrote "Prophet". We still have the envelope with the first copy signed and dated by Miles an then Laurie did the DIY copywrite thing and mailed it to herself.I will locate it and get back with the exact date if anyone is interested.
Originally by Tim Hardin. Theres a really good version by Robert Plant. And of course my favorite version is John Holts wich was most likley the inspiration for Sublime's and Slightly Stoopid's covers.
this is slightly stoopid's song. on the closer to the sun box set, it says miles doughty and kyle mcdonald are the song writers, its funny though, the 1st time i heard this song it was a sublime recording, i heard the ss version years later on their acoustic album, the lyrics are different when brad sings it though, both musicians are legends. peace
the song is on slightly stoopid's self titled cd that came out in 96. miles is singing and playing guitar and brad is playing bass. pretty sure he had something to do with it but it was first a slightly stoopid song. the sublime version is on the pure anus and psycho semantic police bootlegs.
see this is not what we need...people comparing stoopid and sublime....we all know sublime and stoopid are good who cares who wrote it... both versions are good.
its a slightly stoopid song, i hear brad did help out with it and some will say this is sublimes song but being a huge fan of both i have yet to hear it by sublime, so to me thats convincing enough to says its by SS
this is a slightly stoopid song that brad played bass on and recorded it with stoopid on their first album. If they recorded it together they may have written it together. From what i heard in an interview miles wrote it. Sublime covered alot of songs. They didn't write smoke two joints or we're only going to die so its possible sublime covered it. who cares though badass song and brad had something to do with it so its legit.
ahah, I guess you cloud call it spunk if u feel like spunking but I never heard someone calling the ska-punk mix spunk. Anyway one type of marijuana s called skunk, + the stinking animal. skunk
this is not from acoustic roots. stoopid did not write this. brad took miles and kyle under his wing when he established skunk and miles will not release their jams out of respect for brad. we are lead to believe this was written during that time, but are pretty sure brad wrote it. either way, awesome song
Bradley did not establish Skunk, Mike Hapold a.k.a. flash or Miguel did. May Bradley rest in peace. You are right about Bradley taking them under his wing, and not releasing jams out of respect. Peace!
You sir are correct. Mike is from my hometown, and I have met him several times. I am friends with Miles,Kyle,O.G.,Rymo, C-Money, and all of Stoopids friends, including you, we just haven't met yet. I saw O.G. and C-Money perform last night, with Smally and Skart from Supervillains, badass.
Hard to say who wrote it, kinda think it was Brad, but doesn't sound like his style, its on the new box set though, and he says at the end, this song needs to be rethought out. I don't know, I was just listening to Brad sing it so I looked for this video. I do know this, Sublime is tattooed on my back and on many others, have yet to see Slightly Stoopid on someones back.
just stfu with copying and all that bull their a band and they have written good music and obviously their goin to sound like sublime and be like them cause they used to chill together
how did I not know about this song before? awesome

whether Stoopid's trying to be like them or the two bands are in the same ball park if not league (genres)..hence the reason they sound so similar
tuckerwells 2 years ago
actually Sublime did the cover.

thats the last thing slightly stoopid's trying to do. yeah bradley's version kicks the shit out of this, but they used to jam together all the time so they have every right to perform this song in bradley's memory

This comment has received too many negative votes show
awful awful. i'm sorry. it's just my truthful opinion, SUBLIME is 1 million times better than these guys. they're just an average whiney band to me
Twisted19881 3 years ago
yeah i heard the sublime version of this song...out of the set box "everything under the sun". brads voice was amazing in their version...i like slightly stoopid's shit too...although they dont have the same vibe as sublime...they have another feel to offer, but i dont think their goal is to be another follow up to sublime...they have their own shit that sounds great...i respect them unlike other people. i like that easy vibe shit... i dont care who makes the music...

Lol Miles never wrote this song loser. This song has beem whored over to singers as bad as RE4 has been to systems. Sublime sang this song as far back as 1993 and many others singers before them redhueod. Very good version of the song though.
ss2vash 3 years ago
ss2vash is correct. this song was written by the famous bradley nowell, but this is just as good. :)

My wife,Laurie,Miles mom.Believes he was 18 as near as she can remember when he wrote "Prophet". We still have the envelope with the first copy signed and dated by Miles an then Laurie did the DIY copywrite thing and mailed it to herself.I will locate it and get back with the exact date if anyone is interested.

miles was doing hella good on this song thats for sure

Originally by Tim Hardin. Theres a really good version by Robert Plant. And of course my favorite version is John Holts wich was most likley the inspiration for Sublime's and Slightly Stoopid's covers.

This is an old song it has been done by reggae artist and american artist.

this is slightly stoopid's song. on the closer to the sun box set, it says miles doughty and kyle mcdonald are the song writers, its funny though, the 1st time i heard this song it was a sublime recording, i heard the ss version years later on their acoustic album, the lyrics are different when brad sings it though, both musicians are legends. peace

bradley wrote this song, stoopid later covered it
as bradley died in 96
LordGregoryIII 3 years ago
the song is on slightly stoopid's self titled cd that came out in 96. miles is singing and playing guitar and brad is playing bass. pretty sure he had something to do with it but it was first a slightly stoopid song. the sublime version is on the pure anus and psycho semantic police bootlegs.

see this is not what we need...people comparing stoopid and sublime....we all know sublime and stoopid are good who cares who wrote it... both versions are good.

i dont know who did it first but its semi covered from the johnny cash song."if i were a carpenter"
bacon11jelly 3 years ago
wait.... help me out...
Is this sublime's song? or slightly stoopid's? Brad did so many covers it's hard to keep track :)
SublimerYo 3 years ago
its a slightly stoopid song, i hear brad did help out with it and some will say this is sublimes song but being a huge fan of both i have yet to hear it by sublime, so to me thats convincing enough to says its by SS
thesponge8 3 years ago
Brad did help. Sublime does a cover, too. It's on Everything Under the Sun

kind of reminds me of the sublime capital ballroom recording
sublime8696 4 years ago
great song
this is a slightly stoopid song that brad played bass on and recorded it with stoopid on their first album. If they recorded it together they may have written it together. From what i heard in an interview miles wrote it. Sublime covered alot of songs. They didn't write smoke two joints or we're only going to die so its possible sublime covered it. who cares though badass song and brad had something to do with it so its legit.

meteora8423 4 years ago
this is not from acoustic roots. stoopid did not write this. brad took miles and kyle under his wing when he established skunk and miles will not release their jams out of respect for brad. we are lead to believe this was written during that time, but are pretty sure brad wrote it. either way, awesome song
sealthedeal311 4 years ago
Bradley did not establish Skunk, Mike Hapold a.k.a. flash or Miguel did. May Bradley rest in peace. You are right about Bradley taking them under his wing, and not releasing jams out of respect. Peace!

You sir are correct. Mike is from my hometown, and I have met him several times. I am friends with Miles,Kyle,O.G.,Rymo, C-Money, and all of Stoopids friends, including you, we just haven't met yet. I saw O.G. and C-Money perform last night, with Smally and Skart from Supervillains, badass.
ponsuelo420 4 years ago
Hard to say who wrote it, kinda think it was Brad, but doesn't sound like his style, its on the new box set though, and he says at the end, this song needs to be rethought out. I don't know, I was just listening to Brad sing it so I looked for this video. I do know this, Sublime is tattooed on my back and on many others, have yet to see Slightly Stoopid on someones back.
