Senna's performance in this GP is all the more admirable when you consider the fact that he spent the entire off-season in Brazil away from F1 racing altogether. Turns up at the first race of the season and outperforms everyone. The guy was truly amazing.
These were glorious days. And for me, since I'm used to watch F1 from Europe, it was a delight to see the way in which the USA promotes the event on tv, in a way that only they can make and which makes me really jealous of the people who live in America and can enjoy this enthusiastic display of sport. I really love it.
Maybe they promoted it well, but F1 was a very small sport in American media back then. In 1991 there were fewer people watching the race in Phoenix than an ostrich race a few weeks later. No joke. For this reason F1 pulled out from the States after 1991 and didn't return until 2000, only to pull out again from 2006.

@McLarenMercedes The Long Beach GP was extremely successful, but because CART was made up of mainly American drivers the promoters thought it was more beneficial to have it as a CART race as opposed to an F1 race.
I was at this race with my older brother. We were sitting in the apex of the last turn, leading onto the front straightaway. I can't believe it's been 20 years since. This is the only F1 race I've been to in person. Thanks so much for posting it; i've never seen the tape of it till now. It's amazing how much things have changed since in F1 and IndyCar; a lot of people on youtube reminisce about the good old days in both series, I've noticed.
@bduddy55555 I knew the commentators were sent to US GP's. And for sure ESPN wouldn't fly them around the world like ITV or the BBC do. It's just not popular enough over here for that to happen.
Senna really should have dominated this season more. Lost Mexico with a big lead, tire failure, bad back marker pass attempt in Brazil, with a big lead and gear box mistake in Australia, with a big lead. He should have runaway with it. Thats racing.
yea dont forget 1989. to many mechanical and electrical failures from the lead. and it still came down to the end with prost having to side check senna at suzuka at the chicane.
I agree with you, Senna was absolutely tremendous
R.I.P Ayrton
but Nobody was unluckier than Mansell during this year.
almost his whole career was about bad luck.
Mansell skills are really underrated now, almost forgotten. Sad.
He wasn't the quickest or the smartest, but he always drove with his heart at 100%, Moreover he had no fear & could "try" to overtake ppl in impossible areas... hmmmm, Sometimes he screwed up!
Yes. Mansell was a lion. I don't think he has been forgotten though. No one can forget his skill and determination at his craft. Too bad Prost played games with him this year. He could have added great drama to this season.
@v3rtic4L5miL3 I completely disagree. Hardly anyone looks at Mansell and thinks he was underrated. Ask anyone who was the best overtaker of all time and Mansell will be the most likely response. His legacy is secure. :)
I think Mansell deserved the 1986 title (a puncture a few laps from the end meant Prost won the title)
Mansell led 416 laps in 1987 and won 6 races. His team mate Piquet only led 154 laps and won 3 races. Piquet was champion. Yeah, that was really fair...
Had the Williams FW14 been more reliable at the start of the 1991 season he might have won that title too.
Fortunately it all came together in 1992. And the in CART in1993.
