  • This is just a moment to accelerate for speed skaters. those Japanese guys are beaten after 300m's

  • You are all forgetting a very important principal in skating dynamics. The beginning of a race is indeed just a sprint, with less glide and more propulsion. The first 100 meters of a race on ice is actually a 'run' if you can so imagine. Anything after that is where gliding takes effect and technical skating becomes more important than pure propulsion which is what you are seeing here, and why they are not much faster than a running man.

    Hope this clears things up.

  • lol, but there is still no friction, Usain Bolt runs on a rubber track a 9.69, there is no reason these guys shouldn't be running in the low 8's

  • Please re-read my comment.

Even with zero friction the nature of skating dynamics and running dynamics are almost identical for the first 100m of a man powered race. Both men run about mid to high 9 seconds, that is the nature of human propulsion. Please look up the word 'propulsion' in the dictionary.

    Hope this helps.

  • it clears up nothing, these guys can step out onto a track and i bet you they won't run anything better than 11.5 seconds- gauranteed!! The point i was trying to make is that Usain is such a freak of nature his times are approaching speed skating times. And maybe the cadences of the runs are the same, but much more force has to be exerted on a rubber track than a frictionless rink. basic physics dude

  • skating is much slower over the first 10-20m than running because you have to push so far back to get moving where as a running stride doesn't change much. You are right these guys are probably slow runners but Usain bolt is probably a slow skater

  • You don't see the point, do you? In speed-skating, a 100m is a run-up. Skaters are still accelerating at the end of it, and only reach their top-speed until they reach 300 meters.

Usain Bolt will beat these guys when running, but that is because he is a better runner.

You also have to see the difference in technique. A runner can push backward with his foot, while a skater will have no grip when trying to do that. He has to push more sideways.

  • well what you fail to see is the fact that never before had anyone run times in the 100m under 9.7 seconds. Im just commenting that Usain Bolt's times are approaching on skating times, which of course are supposed to be faster because of the frictionless rink. My goodness.

  • Yes, Usain Bolt is running the same times as speed skaters, but he has a track where he has GRIP, while a speed skater has to search for it. They cannot just push backward, but have tot use a different technique. But the disadvantage of this technique is that the first 50 meters they will be slower than running, but after that, they wil just fly past Usain.

*Would love to see Usain bolt do a 100m on speed skates. I'm preparing for a 15.00 time*

  • well, seeing usain on skate would mean nothing because he probably doesn't even know how to skate. I was SIMPLY commenting on the fact that a man on foot is almost as fast as a man skating on ice, what is so incorrect about that???!!!

  • You are totally correct about the fact that Usain runs almost as quickly as a speed skater. But i'm trying to explain that the 8.** second expectation you have about skaters is a totally impossible time.

If you compare the 200m times of Bolt with speed skaters, he will be beaten by almost every Junior speed skater.

I think you should step on the ice someday, to learn what the difference between skating and running in fact is.

  • im in no way trying to disrespect the times of speed skaters when i say this. I'm simply stating how impressive his feets are when then only people faster than him over 100m are speed skaters. Im sure speed skater would dust Usain over 200m because thats probably where the glide kicks in and little work needs to be done, but to run on a rubber track 19.30 over 200m is just flat out insane, and he's only getting faster!

  • speed skaters cannot accelerate nearly as quickly as sprinters

  • Yea, everyone is taking about Bolt. It would be cool to have a track lane and an ice lane somewhere so that the fastest skater and fastest sprinter could race, but the skater would win becuase the WR is lower.

  • i don know. The 3rd place finisher in this race ran a 9.89 and Usain Bolt can JOG a 9.89, like literally he can jog a 9.89- don't believe it, watch the olympic 100m semifinals, where he ran a 9.85 wil jogging 20m of it. He's incredible! THere is no doubt he could destroy some of these guys. And they have blades and a frictionless surface!!!

  • He can't jog a 9.89. He can't even jog a 13. You obviously don't know what jogging is. And the winner of this race skated a 9.45. No one will ever run 100 meters in 9.45, ever.

  • Well yes Usain CAN jog a 9.89, if you kept up with track you would know so. He ran a 9.85 in the olympic semi-final, while JOGGING 20-30m of it. He ran a 9.86 in the Jamaican Olympic Trials while slowing down and talking to Asafa Powell who ran beside him. Plus many physicist say that Usain bolt could've run near a 9.5 if he didn't slow down in his Olympic Finals run where he went 9.69. Comparably these guys are pretty slow. They are on blades and a frictionless surface.

  • I do keep up with track, more so than you do most likely.

ou are saying "JOG" just becuase he slowed down. He was still running, not "jogging."

  • shutting down, relaxing your muscles, and coming to a jog, is what i meant by "jog". and if you keep up with Usain, you will see that he does this quite often, especially in weaker fields.

  • lol this is awesome... im gonna need to see usain race these guys..

  • usain in skate?

  • aha maybe both (skating and sprinting)

  • well then each side going to have their winner. usain in track and oikawa in ice.

  • I wont really care who wins. Just want to see them race lol

  • WOW, Usain Bolt is close to breaking SKATING times WOW!!!

  • Sprinter's delight, there.
