Many of the comments here would seem to suggest that the use of words only shows how un christian you really are. Talk is cheap. And listening to this guy shouting really doesn't make me want to know more. Ranting, raving and gobbing off at the mouth. I thought Jesus cured deafness, not caused it.
True. I often find myself AVOIDING to tell about my faith to Jesus when others wonder what's happening to me. The fear of man is the main reason on the background. :S
He's right. We can't show the gospel. Now we can do good deeds and not be hypocrites telling other people to repent, while ignoring our repentance. The mission of the church and christians is this-Tell people with YOUR MOUTH about Jesus. It's usually a fear of man issue for some of you, it was for me. Fess up and speak up ;)
I would like to caution some who go to church, but don’t actually walk with the Lord. If you tell the world about Jesus, but others see by your actions and the other things you like to talk about that it is not genuine faith, you are actually drawing people away from God. This is the exact reason why there is so much unbelief in this nation. Counterfeit Christianity reigns supreme in America; it is heartbreaking to share the love of Christ to a people who believe everything is just fine.
"When necessary use words"- when necessary? It is necessary at all times. And then back up your words with your life. Otherwise you will just look like a buddhist who is living a good life; a Muslim who is leading a good life; a new ager who is leading a good life and doing good things or even an atheist who is living a loving life.
It may have been better for Francis to say "Preach the gospel, and let it transform your whole life". Our actions are a reflection of the gospel, but they are not the gospel itself. If necessary? Its the only way.
This message so for me. Everyone knows me knows that I am a BORN AGAIN SAVED Christian. I always try to help people but I'm so weak when it comes to preaching the gospel. I pray every night that God grants me the boldness and confidence to go out on the street and just let everything out and just preach the word.
Pray for me people. Dark times are coming and I need the boldness and confidence now!
Amen. This is a great lesson for me. I give to others all the time out of love for Christ and people, but I need to work on speaking up boldly for God again. I've somehow fell off track with that.
If I may defend (for a second) the phrase attributed to St. Francis of Assisi...I don't take it to mean stay silent. "When necessary, use words" actually implies the opposite as WORDS have to be spoken in the sharing of our faith. BUT if we are not LIVING out our witness, then talk is cheap and there's lots of it to go around.
@TheEdge012 I totally agree. I know that it's not my words alone that have been the most powerful witness of Christ, it's my life and actions. THEN the words come. You know the only people I know who think differently? The evangelistsm, bless them! They get to reap the harvest sown by others. But I do agree that your faith must be overt - they've got to KNOW that Jesus is motivating your actions.
@TheEdge012 Well, in the case of salvation, it IS necessary to use words. Scripture tells us faith without works is dead, so of course we need to practice what we preach, but we can't do that unless we are actually preaching something.
You said it! Both are equally important, but if it came down to it... I'd take a "practice, but not preach"-er anyday over a "preach, but not practice"-er.... and judging from all JEsus said to the religious hypocrites, I know he'd feel the same way. Anyway, the point is, the practice needs to come before the preaching.
@TheEdge012 Sure, but seeing as he was a monk (of all monks), he probably had no problem with Christians not using words at all. That, and then there's the whole Catholic heresy ordeal... so yeah, I'm not surprised that a quote from a Catholic "Saint" proves to be based on poor theology. #pleasegoevangelize
@HKragh we educate our children because they do not know at birth how to live. Every step of human development is a process of education, including the processes of the spirit.
Why is it our duty to make the knowledge of Jesus available to everybody? Can't he just do the job himself? Afterall, he is the one making it a problem, if you don't know about him. This doctrine, and the very core of the system is so profoundly stupid, I just can't understand people buying into it...
True to the bone. That's dead on. I've been doing that, using words like" spirituality" "love" until the Lord convited me, "Say my name!" you will be blessed if you proclaim Jesus. It might be hard to let go of what it is that is holding you in that sin, but Gis blesses you and gives you peace and strength beyond all understanding if you exalt Jesus. Amen.
This is true. If people do not know about your faith in Jesus, they will assume your good deeds and joyful character is because you are just "a good person" rather than a daughter or son transformed by God.
Huh. I had an argument with my sister about this. :S

4:30"Good deeds withouth good words could lead to damnation?!?"
What about Matthew 21:28-31 ?
As for using words without the proper knowledge of the truth and the anointment(gift) of the Spirit ...What will be the benefit for the listeners?
1Chorintians 12:29-30
Let not many of you become teachers-James 3:1; or Romans 12:4 the members do not all have the same function...
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, be with God's sons in truth and love.
