I don't want to see a leggiera sing a role written for a spinto. End of story. Not only is the vocal style wrong, but the casting is wrong.  As a singer, she lacks the vocal steel...As an actor, she doesn't have the metal for the emotional heavy lifting - the role is written for a different sort of actor.

You get the sense that she is reaching, rather than deeply grounded. She is simply miscast. That said, it's a fine effort by a wonderful singer and astonishing at her age. However, shouldn't she know better at her age, too?

Also, she seems to be struggling a bit with the line, her breath isn't easy and there's tension in her jaw. None of that is easy or pleasant to watch. I love her in the 60's in Traviata - I feel that she should never attempt anything heavier than that!

Well I must say that I'm positively surprized, even if Norma is NOT a role for Gruberova. However, at 62, the color is still beautiful, phrasing impeccable, projection is quite fine and breath control at that age, is quite fine. This being said, she is NOT a Norma. However, she deserves full respect and recognition for many years of a stunning and exemplary career. She's a TRUE LEGEND. Thank you and bless her!
