There's a traffic signal like that made by Unilight. A problem with single headed signals will be if you're color blind but the Unilight model also displays different shapes (a triangle for the yellow light; octagon (stop sign) for the red light) to cope with this problem.
@yuandrew The problem with that system is that those who need shape to tell them the colour of the light would likely pay less attention to their surroundings as a result of being less sensitive to colour contrast.

well, everywhere else, the top light is red, and the bottom is green. So you can just check which light is on and act accordingly. But you can't do that here.
@oomouwmouw Actually, in some countries, such as Thailand and Japan, red is on the left and green on the right, I believe this order came about by analogy with navigation lights.
Actually, I believe that Chinese traffic law requires motorists to pass a colour vision test. As long as you can distinguish the colours red, yellow, and green, which green weak people still can do, there is no problem. But I'm colour normal, and even to me, the difference between yellow and red is not apparent in the video.
Should see the lights in Chongqing.. they all have visual timers! :)

I don't find anything special about the traffic signal in this clip. It is a problem everywhere else if you're color blind.

Now, this leads me to wonder what happens if you're color blind.
