i love this video, but i gotta say..that frame looks like a death trap. (or at the least...more work than its worth). When you drop a 350 hp motor in there and she start rattling...i got a feeling everything is gonna come appart. best of luck to you
@velvethammer26 You must be young.. Don't recognize the classic frame lines, boxed and extended. That's okay, she ain't kilt me yet, and I've been drivin' it hard for a couple years now. Good luck with yours..
The frame needs lots of rework! The front tube needs to go all the way through to the outsides of the frame . The spring perch needs to be gusseted also. You will need more cross bracing or ad an X member to stiffen the frame!
Must be great having electricity in your work area... It's a night mare when all you got is a 1 car garage with no power! No worries those, I got extention cords. Great series of videos.
any one answer me this, i got a custom built 2x3 120 wall steel frame. i want to slot out the front end of the frame w/2" holes and sleeve them w/2" tubing-will this keep the frame rigid, or is
it a death sentence for the car!, and yes i can weld....some one let me know!
the side of a frame is stressed about as far from the edge as the frame is wide.
the middle of the frame sides have almost no vertical stress on them but they need to be stable side to side.
putting holes in the frame is just for looks. Your actually putting more metal into the frame holing it and tubing the holes than if you just left it plain.
Hey, Patrick again. I have been watching a lot of your videos Richard, and I thank you for your responses to me. You are truly one of a kind. I don't know if my brother and I will have the 41 chevy ready for nationals in Louisville, low on funds. But I still hope to see you there. Take care
Not likely I'll make it this year, but who knows, maybe next... Still havin' fun though, and like you, I can only do as much as time and money allows. Still good though..
hey rpeek, it's Patrick. I was wondering if you could share some knowledge with me? I told you about the 1935 ford truck, well i want to know the cheapest & easiest way frame wise. i was thinking about a ranger or s10 frame but that would show the ugly frame with no fenders. any suggestions?
there's also one out there where someone built a rat rod out of a Ford Ranger, but I couldn't find it in my favorites, but they're out there. If you look you'll find folks doing it out of whatever they've got..
Those bars that go across aren't supposed to be that big around and they are supposed to go all the way through the frame then welded outside and inside.then if they wanted to a circle cut out of metal to fill in the hole in the end of the pipe and welded in to give it the clean frame look on the outside. And are you planning on adding more cross braces to the frame?Loving the videos 5 stars all the way!
I sure appreciate the posts.. I am picking up a lot of pointers from you fella's. It will all come in handy next winter when I start the build on my 32.
keep up the good work Richard.. you're right. its the stuff dreams are made of!!
Yes it is. You've got a really nice truck to work with there. That's going to be an awesome project... Wish I was close enough to get my hands greasy on it. One of these days we should plan a long road trip....... Maybe bring the Ramblers.. That would be such a hoot! hahahahaha..
I was just thinking that sort of thing myself. I remember, it was pretty much recommended that you bring the torque to the center of the frame on these old split wishbone vehicles. Once I get the tranny I can design the center brace. Thanks for the comment..
Might I suggest that you go ahead and remove the other cross member and build a K member for more rigidity. There is going to be way too much torsional twisting going on.

That's the only difference between you &
me, I don't mind welding overhead, infact overheads are among my best welds. But the main thing is gettin'-er-done!!!!

Yes, you can do that with no problems, it's actually the proper way to do it.

@copperkrone the majority of the frame load is carried by the upper and lower surfaces

Go look at the car "mind2waste" is building..

Once I get the tranny I'll be doing some more work in the center of the frame, around the rear tranny brace.

It's true, that front bar wasn't mounted the way I would have liked, but I think it's okay now.
