I prefer Sean Bean of "Game of Thrones" and "Lord of the Rings" fame for McCall in the Equalizer movie adaptation. I could totally see his rendition similar to his rogue agent character from "Goldeneye", but good rather than evil
@CesMan83 Yeah, Bean would be interesting. I remember him playing the leader of a vigilante gang in the forgettable Outlaw, but to see him as a suave, posh troubleshooter in New York would be possibly a revelation.
Ah, the subtleties of Robert McCall! Denzel may do all right, but he's no Edward Woodward. Woodward made that role so much his own that it's hard to imagine anyone else in it. A middle-aged Burt Lancaster would have been excellent. Patrick Stewart would fit the bill, assuming he's still in good shape.
I remember watching this episode when it first aired. Edward Woodward never gave less than a five star performance week in and week out over the course of the entire series.
@dgshadowman He was always excellent and his Shakespearean background gave McCall even more of an edge. In real life, he also battled the odds when he had a heart operation due to the amount of smoking he did because of the long, stressful hours filming the show. It was great when he returned midway through season 3.
@MILLUScl Unlike Kiefer Sutherland, Woodward had a steeliness and smoothness to his character. He could be charming one minute and lethal the next. I honestly thought Russell Crowe would play McCall, but maybe Washington will do a fine job, maybe......
I remember one episode where he was in training course, shooting at pictures of which some were targets and some "innocents" and he shot one of those non-threatening pictures, a young girl, I think, and it bothered him terribly. Edward Woodward really was a fine actor and this was a great series. As I know, you agree :-)
@finnhere2 That must have been from a later season as I don't remember seeing this in season 1. I can imagine how disturbed he would have felt doing that. I know that in a season 1 episode Out Of The Past, he met his ex-wife and broke down when he talked about their very young daughter who died and he said he carried her as she didn't have much long to live. I sure do and really, they should quickly release the remaining seasons (2-4).
@Banner1979 McCall was a well constructed character, he was very hard and cold, yet somehow also human. A character which made you curious about his history.
I wish they manage to release those seasons so that I don't get to hear about it, otherwise my PILE of DVDs only grows... ***sigh***
@finnhere2 He actually did have regrets at the end of this episode. He got drunk with his old boss as he talked about stooping to the level of the bad guys he dealt with.
@finnhere2 And he should be. Because McCall is dealing with a dirty cop who killed another honest cop and tried to kill the female officer that he is trying to set up for their bullshit.
NO, you all have it wrong, Liam Neeson would make the best, and maybe Gabrial Byrne!

@mse48 Edward Woodward really did make that role his own. However, I always thought Sean Bean or even Hugh Laurie would fill the bill.

@Tubernaut Clive Owen would have been great as McCall or maybe Pierce Brosnan.

Do not make McCall angry. It's not a pretty sight.

McCall is the real Jack Bauer.
Now SONY Pictures will produce a EQUALIZER movie with Denzel Washington...

@CI5AgentSweeps No, he killed him, but only in self-defence.
