  • great vid

  • @ cameralabs

i have an Canon EOS 30D and i would like to know how i can get my settings up on the Big Screen rather than looking at the top Right in the Small LCD Screen ? Also how do i get the Vire Finder up on the big screen? sorry am new to this

  • Is that picture of the race car at brands hatch?

  • @bmxbarn15 It was taken a long time ago, but yes, I believe it was Brands Hatch.

  • this is a classic workshop from dslr tips, have helped me alot!

  • @cameralabs Hello, thanks for your quick responses, I would like to know, is a shutter speed of 1/4000 quite sufficient to slow down moving objects, especially for a novice like me and what lens would you recommend for a lower F number. Thanks.

  • @rgp2130 Please read my guide at cameralabs . com - go to the lenses section and click on recommended Canon lenses - that should help you! PS -1/4000 should be fast enough to freeze almost any action!

  • @cameralabs 1/4000 can freeze my fart !!!

  • @rgp2130 PPS - the cheapest lens with a small f-number is the 50mm f1.8.

  • @cameralabs Hello, thank you for your tip. I only have a maximum ISO setting of 6400 and I will try and see what I can manage with that, however, should I want to change lenses to no just achieve the effect I spoke of earlier but a few other combinations, could you please recommend a Canon lens which has a better shutter speed and a lower F number, or anything else that I can use. I currently use the EF-S 18-55mm lens which is standard. Many thanks.

  • Gordon ! YOUR AWESOME ! Great work . I notice that most of your work is on your website and not on youtube. I think you should post more videos on youtube as most of us spend our time here . :)

  • @imranidz Ah but I spend most of my time on my website, so if you want to see all my latest reviews and tutorials, that's where you'll need to go!

  • @cameralabs hi there thank for your videos, it has helped me a great deal, I have one question, with my camera in manual I try to change shutter speed to a higher setting to compensate for the movement of an object, however I am finding that this results in a darker picture when I preview on the screen, when I try to compensate for this by changing the F number, I am not able to have the desired effect as the picture is still a bit dark, can you please help me, thanks.

  • @rgp2130 If you need a certain shutter speed to freeze action and you cant make your f number any smaller to bring in more light, you will need to either illuminate the subject with more light, or increase your ISO sensitivity,

  • @rgp2130 It all depends on what you do, but when I do macro photography, for example, I actually put a flashlight on the bug so I can use a high enough shutter speed to get a clear shot if the insect is moving. (Because is I used a high ISO, small details wouldn't look as good) You can improvise as you go.

  • Hmmm, telling people to go back to Auto mode. Not really a good way to learn.

  • @bpbduncan I recommend everyone leaves their camera on auto so it's ready for spontaneous shots. If you've been adjusting the settings for a certain effect it's easy to forget to change them back and then the camera isn't ready for a quick shot. I've seen lots of people miss shots becuase of this.

  • Outstanding, I've been watching your DSLR tips with my handy dandy notebook and pen in hand. In a matter of an hour you literally made me 10x the photographer. Thank you so much!

  • @helladatguy You're very welcome! Don't forget there's loads more information at my sites and you can support me by shopping - for anything! - at the partner stores page of dslrtips . com and cameralabs . com!

  • Hi! Could you make a video shoeing how to use an external flash?? I have problems with that and probably I'm not the only one, great videos by the way. Really nice review on the nikon 16-85.

  • @Aleksandaryt I'm planning some flash articles at cameralabs . com soon...

  • @cameralabs Thx!

  • Gordon, privately you shoot Canon?

  • Hey super curious, have you begun to experiment with mirror-less dslrs yet? i'm looking into buying one soon.

  • @adiosk8erxxx I love them, although theyre technically better-known as mirrorless ILCs. I've reviewed almost all of them at cameralabs . com! Check them out!

  • Why would anyone dislike this video, it's very selflessly insightful? Oh wait, there are sad people out there too.

  • veryyyyy nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • Phenomenal videos! Not to long and just the right amount of info and comparisons. I just bought a dslr and had no idea how to use it. Thank you!!!

  • SHould MF or AF be used?

  • hey...

i am preetty new and had been using a point and shoot camera earlier.. but as i am growing up and am going into college... i am thinking of buying a relatively good but cheap dslr camera.... i have come across canon eos 1000d... and find it pretty good... but i have one querry... can i use dslr(s) to record hd videos also.. like nikon d3000 or canon eos 1000d.... fits into my budget...

    a reply would be appreciated..!!!!

    thanks..

  • carlube <3

  • thanks for the tips!!! really helpful!! -- from the PHILIPPINES....

  • Check My Page for some photos like this

  • That looks so sick!

  • you are a good photographer

  • Thank you so much.

I´m a totally new beginner, just 2 months ago i bought my first EOS, and thanks too you i allready am able too take cool pic trough these easy/well explained lessons, someone abowe here thought that you should teach in a collage or university, i agree, you got such a calm and relaxing way too teach/explan, once again TKS..

  • great explanation.. !!

  • Carlube? wtf?

  • Thanks for the very useful tips!

  • ABOSULUTLY AMAZING VIDEO I FINALLY GET HOW TO BLUR THE BACKGROUND

  • did anyone else get the flying mexican Superman as and ad?

  • do you hold the shutter release button while moving your camera, or just press it 1 time , or does it matter? I'm still confused of when and how u press the button :(

  • Fellow beginner here. Tried it and got some pretty good shots. I imagine race cars are harder to follow that ordinary road cars.

  • Hi Gordon you are AWESOME!!! God bless you!

  • what focus do you use on moving subject?tnx

  • Thank you so much for your crystal clear explanations!

  • I'm a total beginner and I have just placed an order for the Canon eos 550D. And my goal is to both take stunning stillphotographys and make wonderful shortfilms. My question(s) is this: When capturing video with a DSLR I guess the shutter is open for the entire time capturing video, correct? And if so, can I change the aperture (DOF) live while filming by twisting the lens or must I do it by changing it in the menus?

  • Donnington Park.

  • @haz4510 Actually this was taken at Brands Hatch, but Donnington would be great too.

  • OMG I love the last photo where the background is blur while the subject is being focused but how do u go about doing that? Can my eos500d do that?

  • @BIYAO3 It can indeed since mine is a 450D. Takes a lot of practice though.

  • Good stuff. Do you use a DSLR to film your video's?

  • @Omega350ss Not these ones - I used an old camcorder. But I've started using DSLRs to film my latest reviews.

  • I think your tutorials are gonna help me , for real , when im getting my eos 1000d for the beginning by the end of this month :)

    THANKS A LOT

  • Thanks for that i love going to races and ive just got a nikon d3000 and i love it, is it possible if you could do a video on the best set up for landscape pictures. Thanks

  • Gordon you should be a Lecturer/Teacher in a College or University, teaching Photography. Your very simple way of explaining everything is so easy to understand and follow.

Thank you so much for all the videos. They're very helpful for us beginners.

  • @redlights9991 You're very welcome! Don't forget there's loads more information at my sites and you can support me by shopping - for anything! - at the partner stores page of dslrtips . com and cameralabs . com!

  • @redlights9991 totally agree with you! Gordon you're such a great teacher for beginners

  • how do i take continuous shots and then add them into one picture

  • How do you focus on the subject if it is moving so fast?

  • @trinhk : You could use manual focus or use AI Servo.

Having the shutter release button halfway down with the last mentioned AF mode gives your camera the ability to change focus continuously (as long as you keep your shutter release button halfway pressed down).

  • Those HI FLYING Skate Boarders cant escape me this time!!

  • HPI FTW :D

  • great tips i've learn alot from you...i wish someday i'll be pro like you

  • This was an excellent tip! Worked well

  • If the distance between you can the car changes will that mess up your photo? Or is the exposure time so fast that it wouldn't matter?

  • i luv your vids i am a bloody beginner in DSLR-Photography with my Nikon D3000 but with ur vids i got even a bit of know how ;D

  • These videos give me the opportunity to learn how to do cool things in a matter of 5 minutes. Really are great videos, well done and thankyou!

  • I bought a Tamron lens 18-270mm for my Nikon D60, will that also give the same effect as that of Nikon lenses?

  • how about d lens? it shloud be auto or manual? tnx

  • Why the Shutter priority setting? Why not the Manual setting? How are these settings different?

  • @CheesyMcK You don't have to use shutter priority, it's just easier... and quicker.

  • haha, the new speech recognition plus subtitles somehow doesn't quite work for thie video. it gets kinda political, if you follow the subs :)

  • Slightly related question: does the individual camera or the focusing speed (AC motor vs. USM) have a greater effect on the AF Servo mode when photographing a moving subject? I have a Rebel Xti and I want to photograph bicycle races this summer.

  • wow really helpful!!!

  • that was great, thank you

  • mr. gordon sir, what's your opinion regarding the usage of continuous shooting. to you, is it better to use it, or to take one shot but with great results?

  • Nice vid. In Shutter Priority, how should I set my ISO, white balance, AF area mode and in-camera metering (matrix, center weighted or spot) when taking action shots or racing shots?

  • Gordon, just wantd to say your videos are enormously helpful, and thanks very much for sharing with us.

  • I managed to get a DSLR-like photo just using a standard point-and-shoot digital camera with the help of DSLR Tips..xD!

  • this video was so great. i love it. im planning to buy nikon d5000. and it is my first dslr camera.. do you think this camera will suit to me? thanks and godbless you.

    - kit of Philippines

  • Thanks man ! I really like this vid and helped me so lot with my beginning skills !!

    thanks ! :D

  • hey gordon wasn't part of this from the "blur water for a dreamy effect"

  • Ive learned something new today. Thanks a lot.

    I have subscribed.

  • Wow, great video! You should enter your video into this contest, Ewisdomtv

  • how can i do this with digital cameras, not slr

  • definately looking through your videos before the final in my photography class :)

  • You're very welcome! Don't forget you can support me by shopping - for anything! - at the partner stores page of dslrtips . com and cameralabs . com!

  • Thankyou so much. This was so much help, I've been sick all week and havent been able to attend my photography classes at all. This has helped me a load in keeping up with the class as they move on.

  • Program mode... You should tell people to use Manual, you get to understand so much more about your camera and leanr what everything does

  • My goal here is for people to take correctly exposed pictures and to have their cameras ready for action should an opportunity arise. I know too many people who leave their cameras in manual, then miss an opportunity as a consequence - that's why I always advise reverting to an auto mode just in case.

  • @cameralabs

haha how many times are you going to have to tell everybody why to put it back in Automatic. You are right. Sometimes stuff happens too quickly and you wanna make sure you atleast get one shot before u lose your chance. If your cameras on 60 second exposure u really wont get a chance to snap anything in manual mode. Anyway thanks a lot for these videos they help a lot!

  • @cameralabs It could sound dumb, but it's actually a very good piece of advice. Nobody told me that and I had to learn it by myself: b/w, over or underexposed, absurde shutter speeds, weird iso values, are all things that happened to me after I was experimenting and forgot to reset my camera to auto/normal values.

  • @cameralabs thx so much for ur easy to use instructions I bought this camera a couple of yrs ago for my girlfriend & we never use it to its full ability other than just snaping pics. Then we started going to Barrel racing with our friends that have horses & they wanted some good shots the first wknd was horrible but this wknd the pics were great after looking at ur blured action photo video & some guy asked if I could send some shots to his email for the small town local newspaper Thx again!!!

  • perfect.!. i love how you easily deliver the subject.

  • I dont have a dslr but a superzoom canon sx20is. Will these techniques work on this type of camera.

  • Yes it should...

  • thanks for d tips.

  • Thanks I can't wait to try this! I just got my first DSLR the Sony A550 and it's features are awesome! Have seen shots like this and wondered how they were done, thanks cameralabs :-)

  • Can you confirm this. If I use this technique, should I turn Vibration Reduction OFF?

  • Yes

  • In the video, you initially turned the shutter speed to 1/60. At the end, it was at 1/4. Do you really use that slow of a shutter speed (1/4) to take these photos? Or was that just a different cut of video? I'm a beginner. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

  • It depends on the magnification of the lens, the distance to the subject and the speed at which you pan the camera! You simply have to experiment with different shutter speeds until you get the desired effect - there's no fixed setting which will work for all situations.

  • thanks man, really helps,

  • I'm getting all excited here to buy a camera!

    thanks a lot!

  • Me too, I can feel the excitement of anticipation. I can't wait. I'm getting the Canon EOS 500D T1i, since i'm going to be new in the photography scene.

  • If I where you, Cowboy up to the 50D, It has twice the amount of fps 6.3 vs 3.4 and the shutter speed is 1/8000 vs 1/4000

very important for action. I had the T1i for three weeks returned it to Walmart and bought the 50D. The Kit lens is also better 28-135mm vs 18-55mm

  • That does indeed sound a lot better. Thanks for the good input.

  • If you follow the subject do you still have to use such a slow shutter speed??

  • yes, it's the slow shutter speed which allows the background to blur

  • nice...thanks again GORDON

  • i LOVE YOUR ACCENT. haha it's like a music to my ears : )

  • yea i think he made it easy then it reli is.

i been practise this for a while now.

in the beginning isn't that easy.. u have to practise follow the object

  • this is a great tut. any how can you give some more point? like should my camera be on auto or manual focus, snap or continuous shot. i've been trying to take the some pic of moving object but to no avail and i follow all the step at your website.

  • Use auto focus & set the AF mode to AI Servo in order for it to maintain focus as the subject moves

  • Was that at oulton park ?

  • Nope, Brands Hatch.

  • cool thanks

  • A very clear and easy to understand guide. TQ for all the tips.

  • very helpful tips

  • really interesting . brilliant

  • Fantastic tip man! thxs a lot from argentina! U give begginers a chance to take great phtotos!!! thxs again :D

  • Thanks for the tip, im going to Le Mans this year so this tip will come in handy.

  • what do you do when the subject is coming straight towards you?? or coming out of a bend?? Please Help !!!

  • lol. get out of the way.

  • lol funny!!! i dident mean it like that tho :-)

  • move the camera up and down?

  • oh? say you are zooomed right in???

  • it'sm ore of a joke.. I have no clue. i think you may need to run backwards or something, the pentax ad with the car in focus and the background was blurred was done with the camera on a tripod attached ot the car and the car getting pushed.

  • oh :-) i gess the only way to go is for fast sutter for action coming straght on!?

  • Focus on the target and rotate the camera like a dradle (dradle dradle)

I believe this will give the effect of coming out of a "portal"

Or you can use a wide aperture and a fast shutter speed. This'll blur the background, and maybe a good deal of the target.

You can also use a zoom lense to zoom in, open the shutter, zoom out close the shutter.

    ¯\(°-°)/¯

  • can you make a playlist on your channel dividing the DSLR tips and other lens stuff to make it easier for us to browse your vids? thanks

  • Great idea! Although you may find it easier to navigate dslrtips . com...

  • Thanks for the help love theese little tips, really helps out beginer photographers like myself

  • This is so cool!!! I'm sure it takes a bit of practice, though.

  • GREAT TUTORIAL BEST YET I FOUND ON YOUTUBE! :D Brilliant Job :D

  • Congratulations, really nice videos!!!

Thanks for spending your time to make our life easier.

  • can u do it if someone is running on a track race and what shutter speed should i use??and do you focus on the subject while moving the camera??

    thanks

  • 1/500 f11 iso800

  • Nice tutorial!i already had a succesful panning shot but this tutorial helped me more.ty

  • can you do this with a nikon d40 in burst mode? i am trying get this effect with skateboarding.

  • You can do it with any DSLR - or in fact any camera where you can change the shutter speed - but you don't need to use a burst mode.

  • good stuff, thanks

  • this helped me soo much when i take pictures of my friends and i riding our BMX bikes with my nikon p80 Thanks!

  • really interesting . brilliant

  • Haha you sure do emphasize returning the camera to original settings!

    Great Videos!

  • Wow awesome stuff! Thanks!

  • Hey Gordon if I use the Canon EOS 40D or Nikon D90 do I need to change the AF Drive like use the AF Servo or AF Continuous especially get moving subject like the video above, Is that necessary to use the highest speed of burst mode ?

  • Depends on the subject - I didn't need to here. By the way, I have limited time to reply on youtube, so for more detailed discussions, please post any questions on the forums at cameralabs . com.

  • Amazing! =]I'm getting into photography, I plan on buying a Nikon D80, and your videos are great for beginners like me. Very easy to fallow.

I can't wait to experiment with my camera.

  • Great. Thanks for all the videos! For me as a beginner it is great to see how to do this, how to do that... Thank you!!

  • Your tips are a lot better than looking in a book or online. Excellent! Can't wait to try these on my own

  • tnx for the tips Gordon, I will try this on my semi-pro canon camera

  • Thank you. I always wanted to try this but was confused by complicated instructions. You made it sound very easy. Thanks again

  • thanks-I tried this technique and after obout 200 pictures of bikers during poker run in KEY WEST -it works perfectly, you just must be very quick -sorry for my anglish I am not an americano

  • wow,

Thanks for this. You are the best

  • Awesome tutorials gordon. I just bought a Sony Alpha 200, with 18-70, 75-300 and the Flash Gun F42AM after reading your reviews about the components.

  • There's always some trial and error with this kind of technique as you get used to the subject, distance and speed on that particular occassion.

  • I did a photo shoot with skatboarders and I tried this technique and wow. It turned out horrible. I was getting perfect mid air shots with fast shutter speed. Just goes to show it's not for every type of photo

  • OUTSTANDING!!!!!! You are great!!!!!

  • Practice makes perfect

  • i totally agree with zaohad 1,this is not easy at all.you need to practice a lot,out of 50 attempts i was happy with just 2 images.

  • Like all things, it does take practice! And most professionals would take lots of photos and may only get a few keepers. That's the beauty of digital. Keep snapping and only keep the ones you like.

  • yea man a took almost 50 pics and i only keep 2 of them a realy came out very good any ways what kind of camera you using???

  • can you do a review on the fujifilm s1000fd? I am looking to buy and the DSLRs are a new kind of camera to me!!!!! Thanks!

  • Do you mean the S100fd? I hope to test that in the future. You do know it's not a DSLR, don't you?

  • Thats a great video! I'll be doing a photography session tonight of my car clubs motors and hopefully i'll be able to get a shot like you've just done.

  • thank you very much sir you saved me money buy not going to photogrphy clases :D

  • No worries - you can make it up to me by visiting the dslrtips website and checking out the support us page!

  • Brilliant.I have read lots of photography books and never really understood them; These videos are incredibly easy and useful - I'm already taking much improved pictures AND using Aperture Priority and using my F 2.8 lens to its full extent. Thanks Gordon and Cameralabs

  • another great tutorial. thanks

  • Hi, I thank-you for the great video's ive just purchased the Olympus E410, For as I am a beginner to D-SLR'S As I just used to shoot with a compact camera, would you recommend the Olympus E410?

  • Well you've bought it now! But seriously, it's a great DSLR. See our fullr eview at cameralabs . com!

  • Thanks for this!

Why do I need to return the dial to Auto or P after I set it to Manual,Av or Tv? I dont practice this but maybe Im missing something..Thanks again.

  • It's just a good habit to leave your camera in fully auto so it's ready for action if you suddenly spot an opportunity. Also if you'd been using unusual settings before, they're probably not ideal for normal shots afterwards.
