THUMBS UP FOR THIS VERSION! This is the original english dub from the 1990's where Kaneda's name is pronounced "Kah-NAY-dah" not "Canada" like the number one commenter wrote. In 2001 they redid this movie with new voice actors and pussified them and RUINED it. I was a teenager when I saw the original and it was my first anime and I will staunchly and vehemently contest this version til the day I DIE. The original english dub is THE BEST.

what i see, is a black hole. The combined powers of Akira and Tetsuo were so stronge it basically created a "black hole" that sucked up all the evil, corruption, civil outbreaks and started Neo-Tokyo with a clean slate. Much like Akiras loss of control at the beginning of the film.

Someone help me (someone who is brand-spanking-new to all the awesomeness that is Akira) here, WHY exactly was Tetsuo...exploding...like he did here? My initial guess when I was watching this (first time ever) was that Tetsuo was attempting to heal the damage he incurred when Kaneda shot him just then, but since he didn't have full control over his powers, they went out of control and started adding too much back, rather than JUST what he lost.

There are many analysis out there; a changing world, puberty, the loss of self to uncontrollable forces..ones that can destroy all you wish to possess, and the horrific consequences. he loves his girlfriend, he fears for his world, and in his loss of control, he destroys it all.

Only one real answer is clear: Tetsuo will never be able to attain that which he (and all of us) need; he destroyed it and cant come back.

In the metaphorical sense, its suppose to represent how power corrupts people and when you let it get out of hand it destroys you and every one around you. it has nothing to do with puberty. the entire film, is about power, and corruption.

Dubs make anime accessible to the average person who just wants to watch a movie. Putting in subtitles and keeping the original Japanese voice-overs caters for a small number of fanatics of a movie who want as little as possible changed (which is only about 5% of the people who watch them). Plus, without dubs almost NONE of these awesome amines would won't have any interest outside Japan.
