@chinahands100 I know! Watch the 1930's versions of these episodes, and even the new movie: while Robert Downey Jr. plays an excellent Holmes, no one can ever breath as much life into the role as the almighty Jeremy Brett!! :-)
I like the bit of the sailor being chased by the mastiff. Not from the book of course, but it illustrates his persistence and loyalty which is nice. In the book he's only mentioned in passing and you never actually 'see' him. :)
Hmmm. Holmes' opening lines are decidedly Wildean in flavor. This is charming, as the two authors (ACD and Wilde) were mutual admirers of the other man's work. :)
@ArwenUndomiel7 It's a strange thing, but though I agree that Brett is the overall finest Holmes of film, I never ever picture him when reading the books. He honestly doesn't look the part particularly well and he made the character very much his own. I am a great fan of both, but I see them almost in two different ways. :)
A pity a truly ideal series based on the books has never been made, this Granada series is the closest we're likely to get.
@Olgalarge the original stories from my recollection aired on PBS's MYSTERY! usually hosted by Diana Rigg or Vincent Price back in late 80s and early 90s.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes & @Kharlamov16 For God's Sake quit your agueing over your obsessions and enjoy your lives really. Its just entertainment, unless if you two are professional historians "ON" Sherlock Holmes and Watson I could see why and if that is the case, than you two blog or chat room it somewhere seperate and more private than youtube. TomboClown, ClaraLamora, and myself just want to watch, comment, and most of all "ENJOY IT"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CALM THE FING DOWN!!!!
@boonpole84, you sound like a complete moron. they were not arguing (learn to spell it) in a heated way... they were just having a discussion. That is what discussion boards are about. People will not always agree, and they will put forward their own arguments. I think you're just too stupid to contribute anything useful to the discussion, so you tell people to stop posting. Their posting has absolutely no effect on idiots like you watching this video.
@boonpole84, I found their comments quite informative. I'd rather read postings from passionate fans about their interpretations of the stories, rather than wade through misspelled ramblings from an uneducated boob like yourself telling others to shut up.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes I'm so sorry that England couldn't find younger actors to play the characters. It's a mistake that will never be understood. Pensioners can't fight criminals!
@Kharlamov16 if the age of the characters is so important to you you should check the latest BBC 2010 Sherlock series, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are the youngest Holmes and Watson on screen. So England did find younger actors. Cumberbatch is, in fact, my second favorite Holmes after Brett.
Everything's great. But Watson should be younger, for God's sake! When Conan Doyle was writing these stories, he was about 30!!! Does it make any sense? That's why there is no better Dr Watson than Vitaly Solomin from the Russian series! I still consider Livanov to be the best Sherlock Holmes. And Vitaly Solomin is the best Watson that has ever appeared on screen. Watch the Russian series!
@Kharlamov16 When Doyle started writing the first novel A Study in Scarlet in 1881 he was in his late twenties and Holmes and Watson were of the same age. However, the last stories were written in late 1920s, when Doyle was past 60. In The Last Bow which takes place in 1914 Holmes is 60ish. The median age of Holmes and Watson - that is in the most of stories in late 80s early 90s is around 35.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes Yes, Holmes and Watson were not that old. Watson "took a degree in medicine in 1978'' He was a good boxer, runner and a very attractive young man. That's why that young lady from "The Sign of Four" married him. Most interesting cases, for example, The Red-Headed League, The Speckled Band, The Hound of the Baskervilles involved young Watson and Holmes.
@Kharlamov16 I do agree with you on Russian Watson, he is indeed an intelligent and charming gentleman that I imagined when reading the Canon. Livanov is a fine Holmes, however, with all due respects to him, IMHO Brett was the actor who came the closest to Canon Holmes.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes At least, we agreed on the most appropriate Watson-)) I have nothing against Jeremy Brett. He's alight. It's just that he's very loud. Holmes didn't shout that much. Also, he didn't give Watson hard time very often. Anyway, I'm glad that you got a glimpse of Solomin. I imagined the same Watson as you did. I'm so sorry that most Doyle's fans haven't seen Vitaly Solomin.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes Don't forget that Livanov was awarded the OBE by the Queen who considered him to be the best Holmes. Also when Conan Doyle's daughter saw the Russian series she said that at last somebody had found the right actors for the roles. She even said that her father would be happy if he saw the series. It means that she wasn't happy about other actors playing Holmes and Watson.
@Kharlamov16 actually I think that the OBE was more to appreciate that Livanov was non- Brit and even non- English speaking actor to portray the quintessntially english character, rather than to declare him the best of all 70+ portrayals of Holmes. And even if she thought him to be the best Holmes- so what, she is not sherlockian after all, so what if she is a Queen that doesn't make her opinion about holmesian canon more valid.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes I've been reading a lot of the Holmes stories for the last few days. And I can't say that Holmes is that nervous like Brett all the time. He's not that mean to Watson either. In fact, it is Watson who sometimes pissed off at Holmes. This is what the Russian series is all about. I don't understand why Brett shouts all the time. He's very loud.
@Kharlamov16 From the Canon: "...Holmes jumped... Holmes cried... Holmes exclaimed...Holmes threw himself on the ground with fierce energy...Holmes pacing the room... His eccentricity, his addiction to music at strange hours...."I really cannot congratulate you Watson" (with a groan on Watson's engagement ), "Cut out the poetry, Watson", "I don't have time for trifles", "You wasted your time Watson".
@Kharlamov16 the Canon Holmes is not the same in his young and later years. In the STUD he is reckless, nervous, eccentric youth who's beating corpses in the morgue and ready to give poison to his friend for the sake of scientific experiment. He's cocaine addict, calculating machine rejecting all human emotions. In later stories he is calmer, more human - because of experiencing "death" at Reichenbach, and because of Wartson's human influence, and because of just getting older and wiser.
@Kharlamov16 Beacuse Holmes changes throughout the Canon - starting as eccentric calculating machine and ending as calmer and more human when he retires and because his character is in general rather eccentric and complex, it's hard for one actor to pin him down. Different actors emphasized diferent sides of him. Brett is closer to the younger, nervous, cocaine addict Holmes however in the Return series he's more human and often shows human syphathy thus keeping up with Canon brilliantly.
"Since the matter on which you seek advice is somewhat outside my USUAL field of expertise." (as he throws her letter like a piece of trash) LOL! Poor Holmes wants a real case.
Hmm The coffee part at the beginning is WAY longer than the book version! =)
In the book, Watson just said "Holmes and myself were having coffee." And that's all. However, the film version is GREAT. <3 and the actors are NICE "in the two means" :)
"Hmm The coffee part at the beginning is WAY longer than the book version! =) In the book, Watson just said "Holmes and myself were having coffee." "
man, this caused me laugh my head off =)
obviously the episode was made far longer than the corresponding place in the book because the world needs MORE Holmes & Watson. Not just "having coffee" :)))
@TomKeresey64 "You have erred, perhaps." Goes to fire to light pipe. "You have erred."
Holmes is basically telling Watson he has focussed on the dramatics in his stories of Holmes' exploits, rather than recording the details of the facts to teach the reader how to detect.
@prolifeprincess Oh yes! But intriguing is the fact that this rudeness, and anger, are just a "disguise" from his real feelings: disappointment about the less knowledge of people about the art of detuction and, first of all, his hurted soul to be nearly...underestimated (!?) Even by Watson (who is laughing when he is writing, apparantely, about when of their "cases")
@yamifannetje Oh yes, i agree! I am so glad i found JB! He is most definately the very best Holmes there ever was. Very true to the book Holmes. <3 I love him!
One of my favorites. "The mastiff."........"And if someone were to ask you to wear this dress or that dress and sit here or there, would that be a problem?".........."Welcome to the Copper Beeches indeed."
@ClaraLamora how does one to understand this. Smoking that pipe makes him so rude or chooses he always that pipe when he's in one of his so-called bas "moods"
It always give me some little shock to see Sherlock so angry with Watson. It makes me want to creep into this tribute and hug him to calm down a little bit
