Canada actually won last year at the SPRING U-18's when Hodgson was captain. They have been winning the SUMMER U-18's consecutively (where they have all their best players.)

You do realize that the spring U-18 is a team made of Canadian players who were eliminated from the CHL playoffs? i.e. not necessarily the best players are available. It's not like the American U-18 team when they play together ALL YEAR LONG.

Plus...the World Juniors is the main event.

Canada is by far the best country in the world at hockey, there is no doubt, as of the 05-06 season 53.6% of all players in the league were Canadian. USA was second... with only 18.5%.

Were it not Russian players staying home and playing in Russian leagues like the KHL all these years, I bet that ratio goes way, way down. Look at the top players in the NHL, Crosby's the only Canadian in the top 5, the rest are Russian (Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk, and Kovalchuk). I will give you that, Canada's defensemen are by far superior to the rest of the world. There are guys Canada will be leaving behind in 2010 (Souray, Wideman, Keith, maybe Neidermeyer and Pronger) that would be a #2 or even a #1 on any other team in the world. But Russia's offensive talent is by far superior to Canada's. There is no line in Canada that can compete with a line of Ovechkin-Malkin-Kovalchuk. Canada's defensemen, as superior as they are, will have nightmares about that line.

Last year Russia beat you in the worlds on your own home ice. This year they did again on neutral ice with a team of mostly KHL'ers. They came within a fluke goal 5 seconds from time from beating you in the juniors, a tournament that only Canada cares about and was being played on Canadian ice. All your talent and all your passion for the juniors combined with home ice advantage and you could only eek out a tie with 5 seconds to go in regulation and then win in a shootout. They're better.

Long Island is one of the nicest (and wealthiest) places in the world to live and the Islanders, as Tavares himself said, are one of the most storied franchises in the history of the game. If you actually watched some of the exhibition IIHF games you'll notice that he actually passed and set people up multiple times where easily he could've shot. If you take a look at the standings, the last place team, so far, is the New York Islanders. Yes, they really are that awful, and have been for a long time. I guess history doesn't teach the Isles any lessons, though, since their picks always underperform or are traded away.
