Actually, they are putting on Mechwar 9 on the 20th of may, 2006 in Minneapolis. The fire has gotten much bigger too. There is also a 75lb spinning bar that obliterates bots. Checkout Tcmechwars.com for videos of the events. 3,4, & 5 are available, with 6,7,8, and 9 will be available soon. Also, Mechwars fights the LARGEST robots aomngst the competitions in the us, up to 390lbs, 488lbs if it is a "walking" robot.
This makes me sooo glad the Japanese are putting us to shame in robotics. Their robots dance, assist the handicapped and do Tai Chi, ours roll around and blow each other up. Why are Americans obsessed with aggression and conflict? Oh yeah, ignorance!

The only reason why Battlebots and other shows like it went off the air was because the media put too much emphasis was placed on the "WWE" like element, rather than the skill of the builders and the engineering of the machines.
In fact the US's Roomba is by far the most successful domestic robot. Large japanese corporations make lots of nice demonstration robots, but don't expect to see QRIO in your house anytime in the next 20 years. (how many people do you know who even own an Aibo?)

Can you just appreciate the work and effort put into making ANY robot or ROV, regardless of form or function? A robot that walks up stairs, awesome! A machine that can spin a tool steel bar at 200 MPH, NICE! A robot that can put out fires, fucking great! Just relax and enjoy! Geez... Aren't you being just a little "Closed-minded"?
