turtles reach a certain size when they mature... the normal adult size. after that the easiest way to find out how old a turtle is, is to tag it and monitor its re-visiting to that same spot. assuming it's a female it will return to the same spot it was born to give birth. they have very sensitive magnetic direction.
this is a cool video, except that you disturbed the turtle, but... ehh it's a cool video.

This is a hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), not a loggerhead. Also, only hawksbills eat sponges. Good video, quite illustrative.
