I think you need to look at both sides of this issue. Isn't it Ernie who is always messing up Bert's bottle cap collection, messing with his pigeons, being unreasonable, making them sleep in separate beds, purposefully making Bert jealous by taunting him with the rubber duckie ("rubber duckie, you're the one!")  etc? Life with Ernie is no picnic.
