Wow ... I just watched 2-3 other videos about using the ab wheel/roller, and in one minute you made 2 very important points I didn't hear in the other ones (about rounding your back and starting with your thighs perpendicular to the floor). Thanks a lot for the info!
great video. I went through a few extremely unhelpful ones before I found this one and it explained why it was hurting my back. I need to work my way down....I was pulling with my back like you showed. Thnx
I did this as a biweekly exercise during highschool and was able to get a strong foundation for my 6 pack, I also did inverted (hanging) sit ups, and oblique curls. Initially I used running on the track to lose my flab.
@KonanSuper Try not to think of muscles in different sections. Think of them as one solid mass that either contracts completely or does not. This thing about isolating certain parts of the muscles has unfortunately resulted in poor workouts focusing on isolation single joint exercises instead of more productive multi joint exercises. Pick 1 or 2 good exercises per muscle and work them hard. It will work. The ab wheel will work the entire stomach. It's all you really need if you work hard on it.
@1Martinmeza I think that honestly depends on how developed you are in terms of puberty. If you haven't hit it yet or are just starting puberty, then probably not. If you were an "early bloomer," you should be ok.
Thank You so much for this lesson! I just bought an ab wheel and it didn't come with any directions when i used it my lower back hurt when i used it. now i know how to use it. thanks again!
Great video, after watching it I've realised that I let my back sag waay too much. You have saved me from a lot of potential back injuries, thanks man
Great technique and video. Easy to understand and duplicate. Soooo much on the web is bullshit. Recommend your video to anyone serious about hardening their abs. Keep up the good work, and thanks.
@resonnant It is a pretty advanced move but it can be scaled back alot by not letting the wheelget so far out in front of you. Still pretty advanced for many and for those I recommend use of a stability ball for variations of the plank exercise. The plank and many of its variations are hugely beneficial.
@cassiusclaynyc Thank you for the response. I pulled back a bit and was able to do about 10. I read an article that said crunches were 'out' and the abs wheel was the way to go. I hate expending energy on exercise that doesn't really work. I have a ball so I'll check out youtube vids for the ball and plank. Thanks again!
Great video! I have progressed to doing these from a standing position and also doing them one handed from a standing position. Excellent for ab as well as core strength and stability. Great upper body workout, too! Feel free to check out my channel and critique my form. Have a great day!
I bought one of these about a year ago for the express purpose of getting back into shape, but when I couldn't use the wheel properly I just gave up on it. It's been collecting dust in the corner of my room all this time.
Seeing how to use it properly makes me want to start exercising with it. Thank you for the vid. It was very helpful. <3
Time to clean it off and make some space in my room!
QUESTION! For a person who's physically unfit and is trying to get into shape, would you recommend this exercise? Or is there something lighter that's better for starters? And if this exercise IS suitable, how long would you recommend I use the ab wheel, a minute? Less? More?
@devilcat07 See above post to Resonnant. If you are having difficulty mastering the wheel or something doesnt feel right then by all means choose something else. for many people I train who cannot do the wheel I use stability ball planks to help them. Planks are excellent.
i GOT A good question. Okay. Well I never ever used an Ab Roller... I just basically do runnin and Crunches(Many variations) & I get my Six Pack. Though IT's been to cold lately. & I been letting myself go on the workouts... Will the AB Roller get me mad abs or really just tighten me a little? Please help me out. Message me prefferably... I haven't bought It yet though I think I will need to... our winter ends like In two months -_-
I'm not sure if I'm doing the movement correctly, my back trembles when I stretch out, is it just because my back muscles are weak? Also my upper back hurts a bit during the curling motion...Any tips?
@MiraHakuta Too advanced probably! Try not going out far with the wheel or use other core exercises till your up to speed! Shouldnt take long if you work hard.
Hey there cassiusclaynyc. First, thanks for uploading this video. I'd like to ask how do I know if I'm doin it correctly because I just bought an ab wheel and my lower abs hurt (the way it usually does after doin some crunches) after doin like 3 sets, 20 reps but my lowerback hurts too even if I try to curve my back and crunch. I know when I accidentally pull using my back because I really feel it hurts. Do you think there's wrong with my execution? Thanks man!
@chelbau You may need to slow down and also do less reps. More is not better. Its all about quality. Every rep counts. I do way less reps and still get alot out of it. Also variety in your exercises. Your core works in many directions. Train it in all of them!
@cassiusclaynyc Cool. Thanks, man! I'm doin less reps now, as you advised and I do I roll out slowly. My lower back doesn't hurt that much anymore when I do it...I just keep in mind that I have to curve my back and use my abs and crunch when rolling back. I don't extend that much, though because I tried doing it all the way before and I was curling my back the other way around - the wrong way and it hurt. After that incident, I know when I'm doing it wrong. THANKS A LOT, MAN!!! YOU'RE THE BEST!
Thanks for this vid. It really helps to see someone do the movements in real life so that you have full movements to copy. I only just got a wheel so this was very helpful!
This is working out my arms more than my back. I want to throw the fucking thing across the room. As a beginner, this video isn't very helpful at all.
@AwesomeEnterprises Easy guy. All that shows is that possibly your core is in better condition than your arms are. The weakest muscle group of those recruited in the movement are gonna be the ones to tire first. With practice your arms will gain strength and endurance and you should hopefully then be able to feel it moreso in your stomach. Getting a good arm workout is a bad thing?
@cassiusclaynyc I apologise; I was too tired and stressed out to think clearly and approach the workout sensibly. I have since figured it out (with the help of your video and others) and I'm definitely feeling it in my abs now. Thanks for your help!
@AwesomeEnterprises you need to focus on using your abs to control the whole movement; it is similar to those that bench and say they feel it in their triceps and shoulders more; you gotta not think but feel; it is like a finger pointing to the moon; don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all the heavenly glory
OMG thank you sooo much for telling about the back thing i didn't even notice about it my kit's instruction didn't say anything about it THANK YOU SO MUCH
I heard this will only tone up your abs....but will NOT loose fat....this true? I have a bit of fat around my abs, if i pinch the fat around my abs its around 4cm of fat grabbing. Friends told me about this and said it should work because i dont have that much fat around my abs, i want to tone up....this will do the trick?
So if you have a weak core you should do this fast but if your core is stronger you can do it slower? I hate doing alot of reps. I would rather do them slow and controller to build strength. I would assume that when my core becomes stronger I can go slower and controlled?
@randleshinola You have to start somewhere. Like with chin ups; some people have to start with negatives because they can't even do one!
For people who can't do a full rep yet, you might try using a wall as a guide. Slowly roll out, bump the wall, then crunch back in. Of course, have the wall spaced out so that it is the right distance away, and is just far enough that it is challenging. Gradually move yourself further and further away, then ditch the wall completely.
The ab wheel also really helps your core and lower back, i had really bad back problems for years i could only stand up for about an hour at the most before i got an intense back pain and had to lie down. I used the ab wheel for about 2 weeks and my back hurt a little but that's just cause my abs were weak, and now i have no back problems and a six-pack it helped a lot.
My lat work as well when I do them, Also I do them so slow. I take about 8 seconds up and down. that is one hard bit of training that way. much harder than doing 20's 30's etc. to easy that way.
This actually really helped identify what I'm doing wrong in trying to do this exercise (arched back) and now I know what I need to correct. Thanks man.
Got a super quick question. Okay, so I don't have an ab wheel (I know GTFO! right?)...but I wanted to make an inexpensive workout (even though these are only 10 to 40$). What I wanted to know is...
You know how city garbage cans have 2 big wheels on the side (12 inch diameter) and a 20 inch axel? Well...my neighbor kinda broke his can (stuffed too much and the hard plastic container cracked. Could I possibly use this set of wheels and axel for a "less efficient" ab wheel workout?
when i was twelve i made an ab wheel out of training wheels that looked just like the ones of of trash cans... it worked for me. another way to do it is what my neighbor did... he used two five pound weight plates and stuck a piece of a broom stick through the two plates then taped off the ends of the stick to avoid splinters... it worked for him too.
I looked at other ab videos and see that most are pulling back with their arms and thighs. In your video, I can that you are letting the abs do the work. Nice example! I hope you post more with simple work out tools.
Thank you very much for putting this video up. I learned something off of this..Its nice to see competent people showing how to do exercise correctlyl;
Great video.Just got one yesterday and on first trail felt the strain on my back. After watching your video, I realize what I was doing wrong. Thanks, I just avoided getting some serious back injury!
Using this tool and doing arm rotations after each use..... You will be able to knock out a guy in one punch, I GUARANTEE IT, unless you don't know how to punch or somethin.. Arm rotations: leave your arms straight out from your shoulder(STRAIGHT DON'T DROP EM AT ALL) While your arms are extended out rotate your arms a clock wise or counter clock motion (360 rotation) if you wanna amplify it add wrist weights
NICE VID MAN, ALL MY FRIENDS COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT BACK PROBLEM THING, BUT NOW THIs WILL SHUT EM UP!!! LOVE AN AB WHEEL BEEN USING IT SINCE I WAS 17 (twenty now) IMA GET BACK TO USING IT ROUTINELY
excellent help. thank you so much! you have saved my back! the info that came with my roller says to keep the natural curve in the back... gotta love china and their translating.
Hey, great video. Regarding back problems - its actually why I bought a ab roller. Got a bac back and can't do situps, but this works great as an alternative. Would recommend the exercise to anyone with a bad back.
just out of curiosity, how often would you add this exercise to a weekly routine? i have a fairly strong core but want more definition and a bit more strength. I play badminton competatively and my general fitness routine includes kettlebells and swimming.
Thank you for this video! I just recently got an "ab slider" same thing, it just has a resistance belt for either stoping you from rolling too fast.. or making it harder for you to roll all the way out... I guess it could work either way lol, havent really figured it out.
lol my gym teacher had one of these in middle school and i did 30 and was like oh man thats nothing. but the next day holy crap was i sore as hell all over.
I say clean up your technique, make it harder by manually contracting your abs on the in portion. Really really flex them tight and you will feel it alot more. Or if you truly are the man of steel (ha!) just throw a resistance band around the handles and attach it to something.
Yeah me too, I can hardly feel it in my abs at all. My guess is that when you're strong enough to do loads, your abs will start to feel it too... it's probably just that your arms and chest need to "catch up" with your abs
wow. my dad had this and i never knew how to use it. i assumed it was for abs. i tried to do it 1 day but i didnt know u shud keep ur knees on the floor. try doing this in a pushup position.i feel like an idiot.
This is great training , I do it with a dumbell with the same effect.Got my six pack quickly. Cardio is also important for excess fat burning and low fat foods of course. No pain no gain.:-)
Great video... I had bought one a while ago and just recently found it stored away. I was not doing it as instructed in this video but I am glad i saw it because theres a lot less stress in my back. Thanks
This is some good instruction. I like the explanation of common things people do wrong. Another tip if you are having trouble is to roll out while going up an incline (like a board resting on a bench) to build up strength.
are you supposed to feel it in your arms? because i just bought one and i find that my arms are tensed up quite a bit as i go down, and they hurt when im done. Also im having a bit of trouble keeping my back curled as i go down.
It definitely works alot more than just yoour stomach muscles including your triceps, forearms, biceps, lats, and chest. Whatever isnt up to speed for the activity is going to fail first and in this case as most it is your arms and back.
Regress to plank variations until your transverse abdominus is strong enough to maintain the neutral spine required for the wheel.
In the meantime do not go as far out when you do do the ab wheel.
They should include this video in the instructions manual of the abs roller. Seriously, this is good. I purchased the abs roller 1 year ago and never used it often because i felt it was stressing my back too much. I gave it another try after watching this video and never had problems anymore! thanks!
5 stars!!!! Thank you so much. I was doing it all wrong. You know with my butt sticking up and out. Thank you for saving my back and improving my form. :-)
You're not wrong in terms of generic sit-ups, but with a wheel, the pressure isn't solely focused there like a normal sit-up so it is ok to round the back with the roller, as long as you keep your knees perpendicular like he says :)
i personally do not round my back. in fact, aside from a stiff-legged deadlift (which i am not a huge fan of), i can't think of a lift where you SHOULD round one's back. doing so places a much greater load on the spine.
Awesome video mate! Using it for a couple of months now and have up the ante to 70 reps. in one go. How many you'd suggest? Also, rounded back doesn't eliminate back pain completely, you do feel a bit of an ache, no?
That looks more like lats exercise the way you use you hands and keep abs mostly stationary. When do movement with your abs its when there is very little resitance.
Wow ... I just watched 2-3 other videos about using the ab wheel/roller, and in one minute you made 2 very important points I didn't hear in the other ones (about rounding your back and starting with your thighs perpendicular to the floor). Thanks a lot for the info!

@Black0psPenguin
when i was twelve i made an ab wheel out of training wheels that looked just like the ones of of trash cans... it worked for me. another way to do it is what my neighbor did... he used two five pound weight plates and stuck a piece of a broom stick through the two plates then taped off the ends of the stick to avoid splinters... it worked for him too.

I looked at other ab videos and see that most are pulling back with their arms and thighs. In your video, I can that you are letting the abs do the work. Nice example! I hope you post more with simple work out tools.

@danlublock No offense but don't exercise your abs. Go out and run instead. Then when you are thin, then exercise your abs. Trust me!

Hey, great video. Regarding back problems - its actually why I bought a ab roller. Got a bac back and can't do situps, but this works great as an alternative. Would recommend the exercise to anyone with a bad back.

I bought an ab wheel but I totally wasn't using it right. This video was the best I've found on how to use it properly.
TimmyEatsWorld 2 years ago 2
just out of curiosity, how often would you add this exercise to a weekly routine? i have a fairly strong core but want more definition and a bit more strength. I play badminton competatively and my general fitness routine includes kettlebells and swimming.
1980martyn 2 years ago
You could probably use it as often as 3-4 days a week depending on your fitness level.
cassiusclaynyc 1 year ago
ta for that; have been using it on and off, think it is helping!
1980martyn 1 year ago
@1980martyn I use my ab wheel only twice a week because of how intense a workout it is for my abs (any more than that and it feels painful).
P.S: If you are not using an ab wheel, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. Best, more effective results I have ever seen, and it costs almost $0.

Thank you for this video! I just recently got an "ab slider" same thing, it just has a resistance belt for either stoping you from rolling too fast.. or making it harder for you to roll all the way out... I guess it could work either way lol, havent really figured it out.

any idea of a good rep range to be aiming for i normally do sets of 30
frisbyrb5 2 years ago
I say clean up your technique, make it harder by manually contracting your abs on the in portion. Really really flex them tight and you will feel it alot more. Or if you truly are the man of steel (ha!) just throw a resistance band around the handles and attach it to something.
cassiusclaynyc 2 years ago
Is it supposed to be working my arms and chest? I can barely even feel it in my stomach, but I feel it in these other areas.
EmberflyLayouts 2 years ago
Yeah me too, I can hardly feel it in my abs at all. My guess is that when you're strong enough to do loads, your abs will start to feel it too... it's probably just that your arms and chest need to "catch up" with your abs
TheMarkOfTheBeast1 2 years ago
wow. my dad had this and i never knew how to use it. i assumed it was for abs. i tried to do it 1 day but i didnt know u shud keep ur knees on the floor. try doing this in a pushup position.i feel like an idiot.

Thanks
casketcrewchick 2 years ago
This is some good instruction. I like the explanation of common things people do wrong. Another tip if you are having trouble is to roll out while going up an incline (like a board resting on a bench) to build up strength.

ya i made that mistake and had a sore back for a while, now i know better. excellent video, thanks for posting!
getfitdit 2 years ago 2
are you supposed to feel it in your arms? because i just bought one and i find that my arms are tensed up quite a bit as i go down, and they hurt when im done. Also im having a bit of trouble keeping my back curled as i go down.
waterfall765 2 years ago 2
It definitely works alot more than just yoour stomach muscles including your triceps, forearms, biceps, lats, and chest. Whatever isnt up to speed for the activity is going to fail first and in this case as most it is your arms and back.
Regress to plank variations until your transverse abdominus is strong enough to maintain the neutral spine required for the wheel.
In the meantime do not go as far out when you do do the ab wheel.
good luck!!!

They should include this video in the instructions manual of the abs roller. Seriously, this is good. I purchased the abs roller 1 year ago and never used it often because i felt it was stressing my back too much. I gave it another try after watching this video and never had problems anymore! thanks!

Nice vid, though I've read you should not round out your back but you should keep it straight. I haven't used this yet so IDK, am I wrong?
juncho1977 2 years ago
You're not wrong in terms of generic sit-ups, but with a wheel, the pressure isn't solely focused there like a normal sit-up so it is ok to round the back with the roller, as long as you keep your knees perpendicular like he says :)
Minimax04 2 years ago
i personally do not round my back. in fact, aside from a stiff-legged deadlift (which i am not a huge fan of), i can't think of a lift where you SHOULD round one's back. doing so places a much greater load on the spine.
dadominateII 2 years ago
correct! Use natural curvature of the spine 99% of the time!! this is one of only a few pplaces where its cool.
cassiusclaynyc 2 years ago
awesome technique and great video. I 've used it 3 times now during my workout, and my core is definitly improving.
Sonnyboy118 2 years ago
Awesome video mate! Using it for a couple of months now and have up the ante to 70 reps. in one go. How many you'd suggest? Also, rounded back doesn't eliminate back pain completely, you do feel a bit of an ache, no?
fuuk013 2 years ago
Excellent demo. Any chance you could also explain proper form for the standing variation?

thats a good exercise
themeaningoflife38 2 years ago
That looks more like lats exercise the way you use you hands and keep abs mostly stationary. When do movement with your abs its when there is very little resitance.
