I have a Otto Link Super Tone Master 5* which I like a lot, but im having some problems reaching the high tones, do you think I must change it for another mouthpiece, with another opening?? I would apreciate a lot if you can help me!
@aamz145 My thoughts on this would be trying a harder reed. If this doesn't help, get a wider tip opening, and if not... Then practice Overtones. A lot.
Have you played otto link metal mouthpieces? I play with one right now and I'm trying a Vandoren V16 T55, it sound much much louder than Otto Link. My is a 6* Super Tone Master, I don't know the tip openig.....I would like to ask you, if I change to another Otto, wich one should I go for? You are the right guy to ask, I thing you know a lot about Otto Link mouthpieces. Thank you.
@jaythomasjazz Have you got a nice Otto Link Tone Edge to sell?? I live in Argentina, but i think you are the best showing the quality of a mouthpiece. I would like a 8 or maybe 8*
ricos are cutting there cain to early now and they get all waterlogged and shity really fast DONT BUY THEM check out gonzales they are some nice reeds.
Read the remarks Gerry Mulligan made about his standard hard rubber MP from Selmer and why he stuck to it all his live, its on the back of "Lonesome Boulevard".
So true !!!! I talk to a lot of people about it...and it boils down to being able to drive a mouthpiece....if one has something you don't like then one has to be able to steer around it...I think that comes with having a discriminating ear for tone and having the horn in the face long enough to learn how to drive!
although a ton of practice is essential to develop a great tone, different mouthpieces bring out different parts of your tone. Thats always been my experience. Thats why i switched from otto link to jody jazz HR mouthpieces. love them. This guy is rocking this otto tho seriously.
There are a lot of mouthpieces out there that play good...I think Jody Jazz are fine....many Brilharts are good...I have played Meyer mouthpieces I like also...Link in the hard Rubber department has fallen on hard times of late....occasionaly they make a Metal piece that still will go!
I agree...I played the same Link for a long time when I started..there was a period in the 70's....kind of a waste land sonicaly where I played ...first a dukoff then a another high baffle piece...but finally realized it was not the sound i was hearing in my head. I spend a lot of time with Sigurd Rascher stuff and Herbert Clark on trumpet...the trouble with today is there is such a plethora of bad equipment out there and unscrupulous sellers...it's like a shell game!
You gotta find the right set up for you. I agree, you have to put in the time and have the chops - I don't agree with "Most of the "greats" played the same mpc their whole career.". Someone once asked Trane if he had ever tried another piece, and he went in the back room and grabbed a suitcase full of them.

If a person practices and has some chops, a lot of things sound good.

Kids, obsessing about mouthpieces are a WASTE of TIME! This guy has a "bad ass tone" cuz he put in the practice time & thought/imagination required.
Most of the "greats" played the same mpc their whole career.
ps I like Ishimori, too. Tomo rocks!
