  • This is very early Mens derby. The level of play has improved immensely .

Don't be a sexist hater. Derby's roots are in a co-ed sport. Men are not intruding on anything that hasn't been around for decades.

Men's and Women's leagues often practice, coach, ref, and bout together.

But ya know, skaters gonna skate.

  • When I heard about roller derby, I also heard that it started in the 1920's around the same time as the great depression. When I saw this, I almost got insulted because it was MY thing. By my thing I mean that I am a female and it was kind of insulting to me at first. . But, then I stopped flipping out because I believe in equal rights and I would be a hypocrite if I didn't accept this.

  • If you have anything to say about mens roller derby then get in the track and play then try to talk! I am in it and its more hardcore than even rugby! I woulld love for anyone who thinks my teams gay to come to practice and get rocked once or twice!

  • what's up with you guys??? roller derby is a male and female professional contact sport....not because more females began playing it than men over the years means that its gay for guys to play roller derby, that just shows that you know nothing about roller derby or only recently heard about it

there are Men's RD Leagues and there are Women's RD Leagues!!! just it got more popular with women, that's all

  • Super gay. We have enough sports already, Roller Derby is awesome but leave it to the girls. They own it, leave it the fuck alone. Besides, grown men on roller skates.. really?

  • @TheUnfound So, because women play it, it is automatically "super gay" and ridiculous? Wow, that's not sexist or close-minded or anything.

  • @ldf8u Yeah, pretty much. Not everything is equal dude. I like watching women's gymnastics but i'm not about to throw on a leotard and skip with a ribbon in the name of equal rights. Women own Roller Derby, and they're damn good at it. Leave the sport alone and let them have it. No one wants to see grown men on roller skates

  • @TheUnfound Your personal opinion is not an externally valid finding with statistical significance.

  • @ldf8u Which statistics do you source? I'm sure you have credible reputable references, and not simply the membership roster for Men's Roller Derby

  • @TheUnfound Lol. I wasn't offering my own statistics, but pointing out that you should not treat your opinion as such. If you don't understand something in the future, just ask.

  • @ldf8u I understand that it's men intruding on a female sport. And there's no need. Women own Derby and made it the sport it is today, and now men want a piece of that. Leave it be, it doesn't belong to us. We're not a part of the Derby culture, nor should we be. If you want to be in Derby, ref. There's countless other sports we can play without interfering in Derby. We look stupid, we look awkward, and a dozen men on roller skates does not look masculine no matter what environment you put us in

  • @TheUnfound I agree, after watching this I feel it is missing something. The jammer looks clumsy as hell, when the jammer should be fast and graceful. It is just missing that spark that is found in female derby. I don't like it >_<

  • @TheUnfound Imagine how sexist it is to say that women have no place in hockey, basketball, baseball, or any other historically male-dominated sport. You're saying the same thing, but reversing the genders.

No group can own a sport based on gender, sexual orientation, race, creed or otherwise -- anyone's entitled to play any sport they want if they can get enough people and resources together. Good on men for doing roller derby in spite of the haters.

  • @ldf8u Actually it is pretty valid. But again, i throw it out there for someone to prove me wrong with real verifiable statistics. I'm a huge Derby fan, but i see male participation as an intrusion to the sport. There's an entire ethos and culture to Roller Derby to which men don't belong. It's a female sport, let's leave it that way instead of trying to masculinise it and poach glory from the women who've earned it.

  • I suppose the going down on one knee is a nice sign of respect but I just think it's really retarded.

  • @lasktdave It's probably to help the EMTs out a bit too because then they don't have to work around a bunch of idiots standing around and gawking.

  • The flat track is fine, the problem is these guys don't play a very exciting game..

  • one of my new heroooooos

    jajaja

    xXD ( Y )

  • Sorry just not the same as good ole bank track

  • jammers come to the rear of pack and just pass people? Is there defense in this game?

  • @jdcinsf there's supposed to be but most games I've watched there is practically none or it is very poor. The girl's leagues..and a couple of guy teams..have never been taught how to do proper defense.

  • This was gay. The women on derbeyers on YT play a lot more violent.

  • You guys play netball too?

  • I think for 'manderby' they need to widen the track and add hockey boards to enhance the physical play.

  • These are the dimensions for flat track. If they're gonna add boards, why not just build a banked track?

  • @liliodine those are WFTDA dimensions. Men are considerably bigger and require a track that reflects this.

  • Ah, I see. I had no idea. I assume cost would have something to do with it. Do you know if they skate double headers with the women's team? Looks like they have a large enough fan base to attract their own crowd.

  • Just doesn't work on the flat track...

  • Funny, when I skated derby, if someone was injured they'd just get them into the infield and we'd keep skating.

  • Currently, the derby-milieu includes co-ed, all-women's and all-men's teams representing cities world wide. There are tens of thousands of skaters and hundreds of thousands of followers of roller derby. One over-powering emotion binding all these colleagues into one kindred family is a profound passion for the sport.

  • need a banked track

  • Guys just need a bigger track, don't they?

  • This is Windy City's older venue out in Cicero. It had a very slick floor, since then they've moved to the much larger UIC Pavilion in Chicago with Sport Court for a better grip.

Most men's teams skate halftime or doubleheaders with women's leagues. Changing the size of the track midway through an event is not going to happen.

  • I would love to try out for this league

  • Do it!!

  • Liking the wide track and the physical play. Derby needs to get some more contact going.

  • I love that men are i the new style of derby too, it looks a little sloppy, but men form a better pack, and they tend to throw more defensive blocks, they cant seem to stay in bounds though! thats the power of a banked track, keeping the people from going out of bounds and back in at leasure

  • This is great to see! Roller Derby will always need the men in order to provide the male strength and power that audiences crave. GO!

  • Say that to Derringer from TXRG.

  • GO NYSE!
