There are some lenses that do not have the infinity symbol. In most cases such as this your lens will focus at infinity and there will not be any need to adjust it. My suggestion is to take a shot without doing any adjustments after you focus it to infinity or if using auto focus the camera does it. Check the shot at 100 % to see if the shot is properly focused. You can then do one by backing off just a bit and check that.
55 (mm) is related to focal lenght not to focus. Focus ring on many kit lenses (18-55's) is built in the structure that holds the outer lens (the portion of the lens where you attach your lens cap and filters). In order to manualy focus yo have to adjust the range from it. Unfortunately it has no graduation, so you can't really know at which distance you are setting you acceptable area of sharpness. My canon lenes dont have a little 8 so on my 18-55 mm lens i bring it to 55 &

@3000KJH No, 55 is a focal length on the zoom ring. Infinity is on the focus ring.
