Hi Hockeyfan I from WV and I never supported Byrd. I guess I can think for myself and not vote for a man that my parents told me to vote for. which is a very common thing that happens in WV.

Only a handful of the southern politicians who opposed civil rights back in the 50s and 60s are left, (though fortunately Byrd gained the good sense to renounce such attitudes)

I know former Alabama Gov. John Patterson is still alive. Are there any others? And have any said anything in recent years about their attitudes of the time?

Wow.....we give over 90% of the black community their bottle and they still scream RACIST when Obama is president. Im sick of these 2yr old baby liberals and the blacks who voted for Obama and the hispanics who also voted for him. True racism comes from the black and hispanic communities judging by the comments I am reading. It's basically true that a lot of people in this country complain about racism (though it parts of the country it does such as where I live, the Golden State, has a ton of racism).

Wake up and smell the coffee, man. He HAS given up his Klan ways. Senator Byrd has said time and time again that he regrets that part of his life, and he has become one of the Klan's staunchest opponents. He didn't endorse Obama because he's black. He endorsed Obama because he knew Obama and his message of change were what our country needed (and still needs) to get back on track. And history will prove him right, just like it proved him right on Iraq.

I love Sen Byrd, my West Virginia, and Sen. Obama. And yes he was a klansman but that was years ago and he has changed to be one of the best Senators ever...I hate the fact that my state of WV has voted so blindly. I can only hope that come November, my state will look past race and vote for Obama....for the best intrests of WV and America.

Robert Byrd is a perfect example of how anyone can turn around. He began as a bitter enemy of civil rights and became one of the most steadfast advocates of the rights of blacks, workers, and women. I find Byrd to be one of the most fascinating members of the Senate. I remember him as a young black child of the 1960s. His transformation and commitment to justice has been amazing!!

Well you being black I respect you for being able to forgive someone like byrd. I never really had a grudge against byrd because his act changed but i know if I was a black person growing up and watching him do what he did, and hang with the people he hung with I may have never forgiven him no matter what. But you had to live with it, so obviously you were raised to be strong emotionally and so you can forgive better than i could have. I respect that a lot.

He really is a great man - they call him the "conscience of the senate" and the "soul of the senate". I'm gonna quote a remark that I read on another of Sen. Byrd's videos - "former KKK member who has repented for that time in his life with 30 plus years of noble service vs. power hungry war mongerers beholden to the defense industry who piss on the constitution at every turn. I'll take the KKK guy."

Yeah - that is one of the best remarks I've ever read and I had to write it down.

I agree. Oprah is liked by whites because she's considered a non-theatening black person. Remember whites liked obama when he was the underdog candidate.
