It is not fair, to compare the MIG 29, with the GRIPEN JAS -39, the former is over 20 years old. The GRIPEN is in the ` same class` as the SUKHOI 35, MIG 35, Rafael and perhaps the US F-16. You can only compare things in the same Generation!
@terrygand The JAS 39 Gripen is not as fast as the MiG 29 but it can probably outturn it. And the C / D models of the Gripen can still keep upp with most modern fighters.

Main difference between those two is that Raptor has Stealth tech, where JAS does not, however JAS is still in Gen 4.5, where Raptor is in 5. Anyway, Sweden is among the Top 5 when it comes to Military Tech, and even Technology. So, Gen 5 would most likely be better than a Raptor. Anyway, Eurofighter

@rasosteva If you look at Russia, it's highly unlikely that they will buy the MiG-35 as they've already got multi-roll Sukhoi Su-35's, Su-27SB's, Su-33's and the New PAK-FA. Gripen NG however will be bought by atleast Sweden and is a very promising choice for both Brazil, Switzerland, Denmark, Croatia and Holland. The MiG-35 has thrust vectoring which makes it very maneuverable, but the Gripen NG is the most maneuverable single engine jet without the use of TVN.

@veresdani92 hahahaha that's some of the worst crap facts I've ever heard. The Gripen has more than 130 000 hours of flight time with only 5 crashes and <20 small incidents. The Gripen has a hundred times better maneuvering than the Mig-29 and there's a reason that the Gripen is the replacement of the Mig-29 in e.g. Hungarian Air Force. They do various dog-fight exercises fairly often and the Mig-29 doesn't stand a chance. not to mention the radar signature of a Gripen is that of the pilot.

The MiG-35 costs less in initial payment for the aircraft, but the engines are unreliable and extremely expensive in maintenance and operating costs. And the MiG-35 has two of them...

The F-22 and F-35 are generally considered 6th Generation because of the addition of stealth technology. Hornborgdk doesn't know what he's talking about. The F22 stealth works very well; but let him think he knows what he's talking about.

The Gripen NG (which is much more likely to be used than the MiG-35) is a 4.5 generation fighter jet with more 5th generation abilities than the F-35 itself. The Gripen NG has a RCS just above that of the F-35 due to its small size, radar reducing paint and a fairly stealthy fuselage. The MiG-35 and the Su-33 have MUCH larger RCS signatures and thus much less appropriate for BVR dogfights.
@hornborgdk: It really depends what versions of the MiG 29 you are talking about. The newest upgraded versions are comparable to the Gripen. The MiG 29 also has greater speed (Mach 2.25 v. Mach 2), combat radius (888 mi. vs. 500) and payload (21,000 kg. vs. 14,000). The Gripen has more ground attack weapons available making it more of a multi-role fighter and the MiG 29 more of an air defense plane. It all depends what your needs are.

@TheSwekebab that's pretty much the order of the day 4 any 4+ gen fighters, like the french Rafale which has RAM's and composites for reduced radar cross section.. similarly the sukhois the migs also use radar absorbing paint.. the typhoon and f-18 hornets use composites and has better avionics and jamming pods like the su-30Mki's.. i feel the gripen's size and maneuverability may make it very hard to get a lock on.. and the Pricing factor may help it!!

3) maximum speed at high altitude.
In BVR Gripen must be better than OLD MiG-29 (9/12 9/13 if u know what it is). But it's ridiculous to compare the 1983 fighter to the 1996 one.
In dogfight: JAS-39 weights less, has fly-by-wire and canards; MiG-29's advantage is superior rate of climb and thrust/weight.
So I don't know EXACTLY who would win.
But as I remember youtube comments don't affect fighter's characteristics.

@rasosteva If you look at Russia, it's highly unlikely that they will buy the MiG-35 as they've already got multi-roll Sukhoi Su-35's, Su-27SB's, Su-33's and the New PAK-FA. Gripen NG however will be bought by atleast Sweden and is a very promising choice for both Brazil, Switzerland, Denmark, Croatia and Holland. The MiG-35 has thrust vectoring which makes it very maneuverable, but the Gripen NG is the most maneuverable single engine jet without the use of TVN.

Weapon of the same size attached to JAS-39 & to MiG-29 affects Grippen more in %. JAS-39 is good (I'd say it's our days MiG-21), but Sweden doesn't make gen 4 and + engines, so Sweden had 2 buy & modify GE F404. Who would sell smth. good to a rival? JAS-39 needs better engine.

I read about it, F-414G should make it much better. But still I find calling it New Generation a bit controversial (I read somewhere that Swedish generations classification is a bit different, but still). Even F-414G is not going to have TVC (as I know), weapons bay is also not planned, but NG model has a chance to become the best "eurofighter" (Typhoon & Rafale) at least in some aspects.

It's not really any point of comparing the two planes.
They are different generations and developed years apart.
Jas also is about half the size of the MIG-29.
Both are very beutiful and manouverable planes that suits it's purpouses very well.
But remember that the MIG is not the latest and most high tech fighter out of Russia today.
So it's no point comparing them.

@veresdani92 hahahaha that's some of the worst crap facts I've ever heard. The Gripen has more than 130 000 hours of flight time with only 5 crashes and <20 small incidents. The Gripen has a hundred times better maneuvering than the Mig-29 and there's a reason that the Gripen is the replacement of the Mig-29 in e.g. Hungarian Air Force. They do various dog-fight exercises fairly often and the Mig-29 doesn't stand a chance. not to mention the radar signature of a Gripen is that of the pilot.

@rasosteva The Gripen NG has an AESA radar which, according to the Indian M-MRCA evaluators, was much better than that of the MiG-35. The MiG-35 costs less in initial payment for the aircraft, but the engines are unreliable and extremely expensive in maintenance and operating costs. And the MiG-35 has two of them...

@Thebestfoxtrot Oh my god? Weak engine are you SANE? It's one of the best engines in the world, it has only one engine compared to the MiG-29 and the Gripen goes way faster.
The Gripen is the only airplane in the world who only needs 50 metres to take off, beacuse in Sweden it can land on regular roads in the countryside, whe even have depots besides the roads.
The Gripen can also turn easily in dog fights and get behind the enemy while hunted by an enemy beacuse of the easy turn systems.

The MiG-29 has 2 engines, the Gripen has 1, that's why the Gripen has a strong engine. It also weights less, makes it more reliable in dog fight.
I've seen the Gripen during the 100 Year celebration of the Swedish Air Force show when the Gripen took of on about 50-60 metres.
Trust me, the Volvo engine for the JAS 39 Gripen C/D is very good.

And by the telling of the Libya War the Gripen is kinda good, and it's second real combat it's ever seen also.
But it all comes down to the real big wars, and I have to admit Sweden would surely as hell not win a full scale invasion, but we could make some serious damage before going down.

@rysio92 Actually, the MiG-29 is considered 4th Generation, The Gripen definitely falls into the 5th Generation along with the most advanced conventional fighters of today. The F-22 and F-35 are generally considered 6th Generation because of the addition of stealth technology. Hornborgdk doesn't know what he's talking about. The Gripen NG (which is much more likely to be used than the MiG-35) is a 4.5 generation fighter jet with more 5th generation abilities than the F-35 itself. The Gripen NG has a RCS just above that of the F-35 due to its small size, radar reducing paint and a fairly stealthy fuselage. The MiG-35 and the Su-33 have MUCH larger RCS signatures and thus much less appropriate for BVR dogfights.

@hornborgdk: It really depends what versions of the MiG 29 you are talking about. The newest upgraded versions are comparable to the Gripen. The MiG 29 also has greater speed (Mach 2.25 v. Mach 2), combat radius (888 mi. vs. 500) and payload (21,000 kg. vs. 14,000). The Gripen has more ground attack weapons available making it more of a multi-role fighter and the MiG 29 more of an air defense plane. It all depends what your needs are.

@TheSwekebab that's pretty much the order of the day 4 any 4+ gen fighters, like the french Rafale which has RAM's and composites for reduced radar cross section.. similarly the sukhois the migs also use radar absorbing paint.. the typhoon and f-18 hornets use composites and has better avionics and jamming pods like the su-30Mki's.. i feel the gripen's size and maneuverability may make it very hard to get a lock on.. and the Pricing factor may help it!!

russian mig-29ovt is mig-35 made in 2008...with new technology...it have thrust vectoring...and almost stelth.
gripen is good plane but mig is much better...
it have two powerfull engines ...better in dogfights ...

@Thebestfoxtrot @Thebestfoxtrot ... dude. i miscalculated, or just gave some rough info in general.. but what i mean is, russian air force is about 2500 airplanes... chinesse about 5000, and usa, a bit more.. so what I ment is , in war vs Russia, we fucked. in world war 3, its good enough to sabotage enemy and get killed :)
as for israeli part, If they dont want you to know about it, they would have deleted the info on internet.. that why you can´t find it.

Svara på det här videoklippet... there was a video on channel RussiaToday. where israel discusses giving Russia UAV technology in exchange for less geopolitical pressure on middle east conflict, with Iran, mainly S300 ABM defence.. also, the same UAV's they tried on russia in Georgian war 2008, The video must ahve been deleted but i will find you the link..
another interesting thing is, PAK FA design is mainly based on F22, so , they somehow acquired it by espionage, hehehe :D :D :D

@omarfaw Yes, but it's only about UAVs, as I know. Also Ru-Izrael deal during(after) Georgian conflict seems to be real.
But PAK FA seems to be a different story. Even though it's F-22 style, it doesn't mean that Russia needed any special info to build F-22 LOOKING fighter. So "If they dont want you to know about it..." =))), leave it. So we can say that aliens help Russia.

mig-29 is bigger and it can carry more weaponds and it has a longer range but it's big and gripen is small. its harder to see gripen on radar because its smaller and it turns faster than the mig, tell me then : why did the Hungarian airforce buy Gripen?
