I first met Ella in 1968, in New Orleans, through her Road Manager, Pete Cavella. We became fast friends, to the point that, she became my late son's surrogate Godmother. They both worshipped one another. I had spent many years following her wherever she appeared in the US and Europe. The saddest year for me was, 1996. Need I say more?

This song actually brings tears to my eyes because I saw Ella in person at the jazz festival of Montreux, Switzerland in 1979 (?) when I was much, much younger. She was truly bigger than life. We couldn't believe our luck, the Goddess of Jazz herself in Europe, singing for us. It was AMAZING. I know exactly what you mean, 1996 was a sad year indeed, may she rest in peace.
