i use to think it was just bad teachers, but until i started working in schools, these parents barely give a shit how their kids' grades are. i've had students who could not tell me the year they were born. the 1st 4 to 5 years of a child's life is spent with the fucking parents. they should know their birthdays, parents' name, street address where they live, etc. the parents are also failing these kids. shitty parenting=shitty kid behavior. a longer school year will not solve stupidity.
i work in a school district as a teacher's aide...and in a poor neighborhood, these kids aren't behind because of a shorter school year, they have problems beyond academics. home problems, street problems, shitty parents who don't come to parent-teacher conferences unless food is served, abused children, parents that don't spend time with their kids to make sure homework is done, lack of up to date books...some of these kids worry when they will have their next meal. fuck you Obama!!!!!!

The standard school year is frustrating enough for both students and teachers; extending the school year into the summer where none of the kids would want to be thinking so hard and where none of the teachers would want to be dealing with kids won't help anyone very much.
Most of what you learn in school has nothing to do with life anyway! Not only that, most of the educated people we do have can't find any work to do because Barak O-dumb-a can't figure out what to do with the economy. Screw longer school year, screw Barak O-dumb-a!
Before this summer vacation cutting kicks in, I think they might need to check and see how many schools actully have the ability to stay open during the summer. Some schools don't have air conditioning, and it can get rather hot in some parts. I think that can throw a wrench in a plan of actully having kids pay attention.

Absurd. Most students lose concentration past 3 pm. They'll only lose from their personal development. Sleep - School - Homework -Sleep would be a typical day. Parents will lose their children's life to the district, not to mention thousands more dollars.
My boyfriend has been honor rolling since grade school. Why should he pay the price for people who CHOOSE to fall behind? What good will more school do him but misery? This is only a good opportunity for the drop-out rate to increase.

The secondary education you would recieve to obtain the certificate, associates, or bachelor's degree would be a part of your public education and available for FREE until age 21!
I would cut summer vacations out but I would shorten or condense the primary years spent in school from K-12 to K-8. I would make it mandatory after 8Th grade to either earn a trade certificate or an associates or bachelor's degree over the next 4 years! I think kids would be intrigued with the idea of being done with school period at 14,15, or even 17 and making great money to boot!

its my belief summer vacation is needed. but in 180 days teachers ave plenty of time to teach kids twelve pages (the length of most tests i would say) its not how long we teach its how we teach. teachers should work on becoming better at teaching not being at school longer. just because a kids in school 200 days a year doesnt mean hell understand the material if its not taught correctly
You make a good point, however our educational system is based on the agricultural age or the 1840's! The reason we have summer vacations is so that children can work their parents farms before the harvest! While there are still farms in the heartland I'm pretty sure there are not that many kids working the fields! Other nations are stepping it up and we need to step it up too!

As a teacher, I'm not opposed to a longer school day (or year) if that was the fix. The reason that the Asians are ahead is simple: a deeper respect for work ethic and education. Simply read the b.s. that people are putting on here (i.e. "dont be takin away my summer"). The SUMMER BREAK was originally put there as an intent to HARVEST - not so Tiffany and Tyler can go to the pool... I do believe in quality over quantity, for sure.

As has already been stated numerous times, the issue with our education is not quantity as much as quality.
Being a junior in high school, I can safely say that school is boring enough as it is. I go from 7:25 to 2:35, and I think that's plenty of time in the classroom. Adding more hours onto the day will do zilch in terms of aiding our mediocre academic performance.
What instead needs to be done is reestablish the importance of education in today's world, and foster student's natural
drive to learn. I firmly believe that everyone, in one way or another, has a natural curiosity and desire to gain knowledge.
The problem with America's schools, especially high schools, is that they destroy that passion with tedious curriculum, boring teachers, and inane rules. Barring my AP classes, I've noticed a tendency for most teachers to simply "get by" in their job. That is, they seem like they really have no desire to be there. That alone gives the message to students that learning is
something "uncool", and reserved only for those whom they perceive to actually be smart. We need to, somehow, reinforce an ardent desire to learn in the minds of our students. How to go about that, I'm not sure, but extending hours and the year as whole is probably not the best way.

Students and teachers could be overworked as a result. Not a good idea to apply pressure to students and teachers. Why not make the extra hours OPTIONAL for students? Heck, if they did do a certain amount of extra time AT THEIR OWN DISCRETION, reward them with EXTRA CREDIT! That may actually encourage some students to decide what's best for them!

Before this summer vacation cutting kicks in, I think they might need to check and see how many schools actully have the ability to stay open during the summer. Some schools don't have air conditioning, and it can get rather hot in some parts. I think that can throw a wrench in a plan of actully having kids pay attention.

Absurd. Most students lose concentration past 3 pm. They'll only lose from their personal development. Sleep - School - Homework -Sleep would be a typical day. Parents will lose their children's life to the district, not to mention thousands more dollars.
My boyfriend has been honor rolling since grade school. Why should he pay the price for people who CHOOSE to fall behind? What good will more school do him but misery? This is only a good opportunity for the drop-out rate to increase.

I would cut summer vacations out but I would shorten or condense the primary years spent in school from K-12 to K-8. I would make it mandatory after 8Th grade to either earn a trade certificate or an associates or bachelor's degree over the next 4 years! I think kids would be intrigued with the idea of being done with school period at 14,15, or even 17 and making great money to boot!

You make a good point, however our educational system is based on the agricultural age or the 1840's! The reason we have summer vacations is so that children can work their parents farms before the harvest! While there are still farms in the heartland I'm pretty sure there are not that many kids working the fields! Other nations are stepping it up and we need to step it up too!

As a teacher, I'm not opposed to a longer school day (or year) if that was the fix. The reason that the Asians are ahead is simple: a deeper respect for work ethic and education. Simply read the b.s. that people are putting on here (i.e. "dont be takin away my summer"). The SUMMER BREAK was originally put there as an intent to HARVEST - not so Tiffany and Tyler can go to the pool... I do believe in quality over quantity, for sure.

As has already been stated numerous times, the issue with our education is not quantity as much as quality.
Being a junior in high school, I can safely say that school is boring enough as it is. I go from 7:25 to 2:35, and I think that's plenty of time in the classroom. Adding more hours onto the day will do zilch in terms of aiding our mediocre academic performance.
What instead needs to be done is reestablish the importance of education in today's world, and foster student's natural

Obama, wants to do this for a couple reasons...
1. To have input towards the thoughts of kids growing up in America-indoctrination of government ideals. That's really not new, we used to say the pledge of allegiance to the flag in school when I was a kid. He wants to teach a different set of values..
2. Poor communities with single parent families...would benefit from a surrogate parent - the teachers...and schools...and since they need it why not foist it on everyone in America.

Teachers are responsible for teaching, definitely, but it's the parents who need to instill good values into their own children. They need to grow some balls and take charge for once.

Obama is admirable in accepting that the educational system is crap, but he is definitely going about the wrong way of fixing it. Less dependence on teachers and standardized test scores, and moreso on parents and kids
And to kids who complain its because of crap teachers, guess what, college profs and bosses at work are not any different

wat the crap i dont even get 3months!!! i get 2months and about 2weeks!!!!!!! so wat the heck i am already tired and wat about the budget and after school activties and sports do we kids and teen need to be in school 24/7 NO!! and teens have jobs!! i get off winter break 2days thanksgiving springbreak and one to to days everyonce in a wile if u need help in the summer go to summer schooll and we have more school than asia then thats the teaching not the kids good ness i hope this inst pasted!

Students and teachers could be overworked as a result. Not a good idea to apply pressure to students and teachers. Why not make the extra hours OPTIONAL for students? Heck, if they did do a certain amount of extra time AT THEIR OWN DISCRETION, reward them with EXTRA CREDIT! That may actually encourage some students to decide what's best for them!

I used to support Obama. now i hate his guts! instead of doing things himself and doing wat HE thinks is good for US, he should be asking the students and teachers wat the real problems are and working together with US to come up with solutions. Unfortunately, the students are too lazy to answer that question with a clear mind. do you REALLY think that if you ask a 6th grader if they want 3 hours of school they will contemplate the effect it will have on their later life and their education? of course not. People are too lazy to see that in the long run, this is going to have a positive effect on our society as a whole.
