@whoybeen I have never had to use my defensive riding skills on any of my classic bikes which may be due to the 100+ db exhaust notes. Wish i could say the same for the modern bikes in my collection.
Great job man. I am taking delivery of my frame this weekend. I am going to attempt a belt drive to see if I can quite the chain noise down. Will be checking out your site later !
That is really cool. Great job! 1st person demo was fun. I'm surprised at all the noise complaint comments though. My Harley is loud as heck and I'd trade it for hearing all the normal machine noises that get drowned out. I see Cobra has new pipes for electrics that actually pump out recorded sound.
I love that bike. I think you did a wonderful job. I too want to build one soon, only after i pay off my coming wedding in the fall, but by next summer i want to have a street bike up and running. What kind of setup did you use for this particular project?
I've got a question for you: Have you considered putting a transmission behind the electric motor? All the motors I have seen are direct drive and I think at least a two speed tranny could be helpfull.
i've seen on here somewhere that if you add some huge capacitors that i've seen on electric go-karts, you can specifically design your system to fire them when accelerating hard enough to trigger the capacitors to fire and add some boost to the motor.
Peak oil crisis is another just another 'scare' tactic. Come on, if there really were a CRISIS in fossil fuels, we would already be using these technologies. Keep people fearing one way or another, consciously or unconsciously on all kinds of issues does the masters good.
Better science has been around for a long time... we could stop using fossil fuels tomorrow; however, some corps will go from Billions in profits, to millions, and we can't have that... they might even break even ... shame.
i think its pretty awesome.... To me it actually sounds good, specially when it revs up.. gotta hand it to you for doing this! here's to all the REAL DIYers! Keep tweaking and posting! cheers.
Why don't they ever set up gears for the electric motor? It seems you could use less power if you could just have 1 more gear in there instead of whinding out the motor all the time. Maybe shift at 45 so you have a higher gear ratio? I don't know, but what do you all think? Or is there a reason why these do not have another gear?
I have an idea to get more range. Get a very small engine like 2 hp. Attatch it to an alternator or generator that will charge the batteries. Therefore increased range.
i forget the name, but it's got a petrol engine charging the batteries. 1 gallon and an initial full charge would get you from san fran to new york.. it's from australia
Holy crap dude, get a primary and secondary clutch from a snowmobile and put it on that baby STAT. Attach the secondary clutch for the rear wheel ala belt drive mototrcycles. You can set the springs and weights to adjust for amperage pull at various gear ratios. I'm pretty sure thats why you didn't include some sort of transmission, because of the power usage right? Believe me, centrifugal is the way to go with electric!
on a motorcycle noise is a bonus, when your the size of a dot in a rearview it keeps ppl alert. Granted most ppl are just jackasses tryin to be rebels with annoyingly loud exhaust.
I think helmets are essential, but I also subscribe to the loud bike theory. My noisy KTM just spent a week in the shop, and I was loaned a whisper quiet CB250. People have driven all over me for the week, merged onto me, cut me off, pulled out in front, the lot. When your on a loud bike, motorists notice you. If you had one, you would know. In anycase, thats just my obeservation, and I still like this electric bike.
Holy crap, that chain is ungodly loud! Any thoughts to doing something about that horrible racket?
Oh, and yeah... regenerative braking would be TOO cool. My electric scooter does it (the twist-grip is more of a speed control than a throttle), it can't be that hard, it just needs to reverse the battery and motor positions automatically =P
Oh man... You really need to mass produce these and sell them in the UK. With the new fear of the oil peak crysis, and all of us looking for ways of saving the environment, these will sell like hot cakes! If they could be sold for around £1000, I would deffo' buy one.
For once, someone produces an eco friendly vehicle that actually looks good. How about writing a report on your project so that others may follow suit, there must be a lot of dead 50cc bikes around and this is well impressive. More practical than my Er5 around town???
z33zr0m is right- for a recharging to work while the bike is coasting and going on its own inertia would be a stroke of genius. We can somehow put in the mechanism it takes to recapture the energy of the wheels merely spinning.
sounds like a typical non o-ring type motocycle chain to me. If he puts on a high quality chain it would probably clear up a bit. But then, why bother, fuckin' A that things slow!
Regenerative braking would be the best upgrade for this bike. And maybe something that recharges during coasting or when the bikes motor is at rest but the bike is still moving due to inertia. E.I. coasting downhill.
wow nice bike i like it !!!

WHAT A HORRIBLE S-O-U-N-D !!!!!
- enough to discourage even the most enthusiastic EV fan ! Ouch !!!
I'm a motorcycle fanatic AND an EV enthusiast,
but this harshsounding whining straight-cut gear-machine must be some of the most unappealing electric vehicles I've ever watched ( heard ! ).
Lowest rating possible, I'm sorry.

The "loud pipe" fans all use that same line. If cagers don't/can't see hear flashing lights and sirens, you think they'll hear you?

No one can hear a bike coming from behind them. Loud pipes are about some idiot being loud, not safety.
Show me one study that says otherwise.
Funny how all the people who say "loud pipes save lives" also oppose helmet laws.

hmm try fitting flexible solar panels to the body of the bike, or get regenerative brakes.
Charles2337 4 years ago
Solar panels would do nothing for a vehicle that size.

yea u shold make a self chraging system so as u ride the stored electricity gets recycled

Next upgrade should be to add a dynamo that would top off the charge as you're rolling. That way you'd blow the 100 mile range right off the map.
