OMG! please! chushintani, i would love to know who your aikido teacher was/were! please tell me where you learned your aikido from so i might be able to seek him/her or them out and learn more.
Well first off, I'm glad to see some resistive training in ANY form in an aikido dojo, it is absolutely necessary to have a strong, and practical martial arts school.
Your students need to keep their posture better, utilize their hips and bodies more, and use their arm muscles a lot less. Also, Kuzushi is absolutely 100% necessary in any throw, just something to think about.
@HuachoPelao365SG It's kind of like learning a new language. You can know several words in another language, but when people start speaking it, quickly, conversationally, you can't tell what's happening. It takes awhile to get used to what you are hearing (in this case seeing), but eventually you're ears (eyes) will adjust, and you will understand what is happening.
@ChuShinTani I understand what you are trying to say here and being cryptic doesn't answer the poor guys statement. I can see the grounding aspects of Aikido in how hard it is for each of them to move the other, but where's the locks? Why also do you start from a stalemate position, why not where most likely the attack is coming from, which is when the attacker is trying to stab you with out being touched first?
@LittleHazey Nothing cryptic here. You don't understand it because you're not used to seeing it. You don't understand spoken language until you hear it spoken; often. As for "locks" they are a secondary part of the Aikido syllabus. A side that catches peoples attention, but makes them ignore the majority of what the forms are teaching. This drill is training once grabbed, much like Aikido forms train. We do do drills where the grab has yet to happen.
This is a useful drill when done in moderation. I would suggest using color markers (hopefully you can wash the "cuts" off your gis later) for a more telling experience.
Also, you MUST use atemi. You would strike in real life, the least you can do is properly feint strikes to distract the person during this drill.
Actually my other reply belongs here. I confused the two. You might want to try opening up to some new ideas. The guys in your videos clearly don't have solid level knowledge of traditional Aikido technique, yet they proceed to experiment with full-resistance training. I've done a bit of Judo randori myself, so I'm not a delusional Aiki bunny. I know what can be done with resistance, and what you're doing... I don't think its too useful toward learning applicable Aikido technique. Good luck.
and though you're probably older than i am, i have lived more.
if Aikido is done properly, then resistance would be futile! if you are teaching it, then you should have reallised that by now! in the class i go to, we try to resist, and we can't, because the whole point of Aikido is to NOT FIGHT! that is the reason Ueshiba O-Sensei came up with it! it is the way of Balancing Ki (hence Ai Ki Do), not honing physical strength that you are teaching these people!
The difference between martial arts theory, and the actual application of martial technique are very different "ball games". And people who haven't tried both will never believe you.

I MUST only do what my mother tells me too.
This drill took place in "real life".

Hmm, you should post a video to prove your points then.
Have you trained with my students? You seem to know a lot about them...
ChuShinTani 4 years ago
i'm with shihonage on the 'atemi' principle.
I think it helps with taking their balance, distraction and building awareness.
Interesting practice, IMO tai sabaki is really important in this kind of training.
Loving the vids tho, thanks for the post, it's a lot different from the average aikido vid.
Tho it looks more like tomiki than iwama.

I wish there was a place nearby where aikido was taught like that, instead of all that dance-dance way.
ohouapss 4 years ago
dance dance? this isnt even Aikido! i saw one of them try tripping the other up with his leg!!
the "dance-dance" way works better than this crap!
youngaikidoka 4 years ago
How very Aiki of you...
ChuShinTani 4 years ago
what are you teaching these people!?
how is that Aikido? it looks more like Judo or Jujitsu to me!
if you do aikido properly, then the opponent wouldnt be able to resist!
youngaikidoka 4 years ago
Sounds like you don't know much about life, little lone Aikido.
ChuShinTani 4 years ago
oh i know about Aikido,
and though you're probably older than i am, i have lived more.

ChuShinTani 4 years ago
Agreed...it's almost like the majority of people are "above" resistance training.
sanjuancb 4 years ago
Isn't it a whole different ball game? Hard to convince people of that though...
sanjuancb 4 years ago

ChuShinTani 4 years ago
then its more like judo though, btw why are they all white belts
SousukePanic 4 years ago
I don't see how that makes it more like Judo. I've never trained Judo, so it would kind of be impossible for me to teach it.
I don't have any black belt students yet. In a few years you can ask, "how come they're all black belts".
ChuShinTani 4 years ago
o right just making sure, cause i was sure if they were blackbelts it will make aikido seem more impressive
and in judo when you do randori both people apply ressistance so thats what i meant by that
