What the guy said near the start of the video, if a shark wants you then there's no way of stopping it, it's having you (something along those lines anyways, I'm not bothered enough to type it word for word), is wrong. People have survived awful attacks that were very, very close to being fatal by punching the sharks in the gills, and kicking it's gills.

When I've been cage diving, with mainly tigers and whites, and a couple of bulls and others, they've come up to nudge the bars. Not all of them, and not very hard. But a few have.
That shark looked curious if anything. He would have crashed into that cage head on with all its got if he intended on harming the diver. Other documentaries have said that certain sharks will nudge divers just because their curious, not because they want to necessaarily harm them. It's their way of feeling them out.
sharks have a bad profile. Yeah i wouldn't want to be in the water with one...but just because one came close to you doesn't mean it's intention was to jump over the cage and rip you to shreds. This was so overdone...

@cormermusic Not true, there have been a few people to survive bites to the abdomen. One young man in 1963 was attacked by a Great White in Australia whilst spear fishing, and he survived massive trauma to his torso and arm. His torso was in such a bad way, you could see bones and organs, and doctors and eyewitnesses said that the only thing holding him together was his wetsuit. He went on to develop the cage for cage diving, and he is still alive today :)

But that is quite rare I believe...and if it does happen, it is useful because it gives us a chance to survive.Usually though, victims of bad bites bleed to death in the water if they are relatively far out from the beach, lucky people are picked up by boats (I'm pretty sure the guy I talked about before was rescued by a boat).
@ah93704 There's actually no evidence to suggest that they "don't like how we taste" a lot of attacks are test bites. But the great white sharks predatory tactics are hit and run then come back after the prey has bled out. Since most humans aren't alone and close to either a boat or the shore we have a chance to escape. Since a lot of spear fishermen and scuba divers are actually consumed you would think they're ok with how we taste, but given that attacks are rare they prefer other food
@ah93704 A few shark species does eat us because of hunger. Like 8 of over a hundred. But not completely devour us, just eat a piece. Some of them are the great white, the tiger shark and the bull shark.
@LasseMaidalPedersen Very rarely...if a white, a tiger or a bull wanted to eat you, they'd take you down. People who lose arms and legs etc, but survive, could simply be because the shark is curious so he takes a bite, then establishes that it's not his usual prey so he runs off. A lot of victims of this type of attack never actually see the shark, it was so fast. Some fatal attacks were fatal because a curious shark just bit, and bit deep enough to sever arteries so victims bled to death.

And "taste tests" may actually be a hunting straregy, the shark takes a bite and waits for you to bleed to death.

But that is quite rare I believe...and if it does happen, it is useful because it gives us a chance to survive.Usually though, victims of bad bites bleed to death in the water if they are relatively far out from the beach, lucky people are picked up by boats (I'm pretty sure the guy I talked about before was rescued by a boat).

@ah93704 There's actually no evidence to suggest that they "don't like how we taste" a lot of attacks are test bites. But the great white sharks predatory tactics are hit and run then come back after the prey has bled out. Since most humans aren't alone and close to either a boat or the shore we have a chance to escape. Since a lot of spear fishermen and scuba divers are actually consumed you would think they're ok with how we taste, but given that attacks are rare they prefer other food

@ah93704 A few shark species does eat us because of hunger. Like 8 of over a hundred. But not completely devour us, just eat a piece. Some of them are the great white, the tiger shark and the bull shark.

@LasseMaidalPedersen Very rarely...if a white, a tiger or a bull wanted to eat you, they'd take you down. People who lose arms and legs etc, but survive, could simply be because the shark is curious so he takes a bite, then establishes that it's not his usual prey so he runs off. A lot of victims of this type of attack never actually see the shark, it was so fast. Some fatal attacks were fatal because a curious shark just bit, and bit deep enough to sever arteries so victims bled to death.

@templarknight94 Yeah, it is rare. And of course they prefer food which is more natural for them. But if they're really hungry, we are on the menu. You're right though, people don't get consumed fully (unless they're dead already, sharks are carnivores), they just bleed to death. And mostly it's just because the shark is curious or mistake us for something else, like you said.

I thought Sharks were usually curious about cages because they are metal objects and they react funny to their senses? They tend to investigate those objects. I don't think it was necessarily interested in the person behind the cage as much as the cage itself.

I kinda hate how Discovery cashes in on shark week, by playing up the hype and horror of sharks. They should be more responsible - this idea of "sharks as monsters" is one of the worst stereotypes ever, and is basically responsible for sharks being slaughtered to the point where the global shark population is down by 90% and no-one (even animal lovers) gives a shit.
