  • Gotta love that piano bit!

  • MK and his lyrics. Where did you get those Bette Davis knees?!!!!!!

    Outstanding here. Outstanding there.

  • I heard this on the radio today, driving on a lonely highway; I hadn't heard it since I was a teenager. I listened closely to the lyrics, and heard the title of the song in the chorus, remembered it, typed it into the search engine, and listened to this awesome song...

I thought to myself THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE. I can listen to almost any song anytime I want.

  • IT is a great song.. I was sad when they broke up..

  • Knopfler has no equal presently.

  • It's like the words were written in 2008!

  • There's leak in Murdoch's boardroom, and they're tryin' to trace the smell.

  • You don;t hear band's like this any more

  • hey ppl (just saying im 18 but who cares) do all you other young dire straits want a medal for being young? who fuckin caresss

  • @metalupyourass9

Not wanting to start anything but perhaps you could cut these folks a little slack. With Gaga and Beiber (and little else) being constantly shoved down their throats, they probably enjoy being "in the know" on some bands and music their peers aren't generally privy to.

  • Reading some of the comments gives me goddawmn goosebumps

    Chillin

  • For the youngster who say they love this stuff. Get yourself an instrument and carry on the ROCK.

  • Damn good Dire Straits song! More people need to understand that Dire Straits was more than Money for Nothing and Sultan of Swing. They have numerous great tunes.

  • fender city

  • I like this playing of it a lot more than the one on album. I really like the guitar part, it's creepy and cool! I'm a 16 yr. old male and in Grade 10 and I like older music like this!

  • @InterestPossession im a 17 year old girl, from a town were no-one knows of this sort of music, and this stuff is the greatest thing i have ever heard, my dad used to listen to it all the time, we still have the vinyls :D

Its good to know that there are other younger people into this too

  • the siren in the intro is baaaaad

  • He be o.k. but not a god.

  • 1:49 = pure awesomeness

  • Comment removed

  • Jack Sonni on rhythm guitar looks like he's having just too much fun! He's like that all the time on stage though. That there is a man who loves his job. Then again, if I had a chance to play next to Mark Knopfler on stage, I'd be pretty stoked about it too.

  • @skifan07 hes stoned

  • 2 men say there Jesus, 1 of them must be wrong! hahahah classic

  • @CottonDinosaur

I can tell you for sure. BOTH of them were wrong!

  • @CottonDinosaur nope there both wrong

  • 12 people have industrial disease.

  • After reading all these comments all I have to say is I don"t care if MK is bald and wears a headband, funkypants, no pants or pink pants. I don't care if he's young, old, fat or skinny, a man that can play like that can run his long beautiful fingers over me anytime. His music is orgasmic especially Lady Writer!!!!!!

  • @dwittersnacker i actually like his headband thing

  • Mark Knopfler - the inventor of foam, sausage and the super nintendo.. you WILL thank me for this pointless information, god damn it!!

  • mark knoffler has to be ranked in the top 10 guirtatist of all time makes it so easy bloody brilliant and my foreman billy as got fleas

  • This is my favorite...love this song.

  • thanx this is ]excellent

  • Great!

  • Doesn't sound like a rewrite of lady writer to me. i'm happy to be educated, but.

  • @foyourethetubedick The song is not a rewrite, he just throws in the guitar riff from Lady Writer once in the intro.

  • excellent song n video, one of the best ,but over looked by most people why!

  • Isn't this just a re-write of Lady Writer?

  • @midnighttilldawn i was thinking lady writer. But there is a riff in the beginning that is a day tripper reference.

  • "Philosophy is useless. Theology is worse."

Truer words are very seldom said.

  • I've got smokers cough from somking, brewers droop from drinking beer. . .

    but I don't care anymore

  • I really can't agree with richie2007100... but i'm not going to argue about it.

  • Mark and David Knopfler have the same receding hairline here.

  • @klotzstang In 1986 it was receding--In 2010 it's BALD--But MK is a great guitar player and a very bright person. Thru the years he has brought me much pleasure!

  • 0:45 he plays the riff to Day Tripper by The Beatles. He did a lot of this on this tour. In one version of Tunnel of Love he plays the riff to Ghost Riders in the Sky.

  • @bunfoo96 I thought I heard that, but wasn't sure. Cool!

  • @richie2007100 You no longer liking it doesn't make it rubbish, as ever with mark, if you really want to hear how it's supposed to sound you have to see him live. What's changed is how he writes songs, basically sitting in the house with an acoustic, he was getting bored of how everything DS had to be big loud stadioum stuff, then while on tour a couple of guitars got pinched and he kinda turned his back on the big gig deal

  • One of the most prophetic songs I know. I had know Idea what he was on about back then. Look at Great Britain now. Seems I was told as a wee lad in the states in the early 60's on how the Bobbys never carried a gun. Cor.

  • @richie2007100 He grew up. You might too someday ;-D

  • Love it : )

  • @richie2007100 fack you, you should show some respect to Mr Knopfler.

he just changed his style and still puts his emtions in the new albums, just in a diferent way. He is still god

  • Never realized it until now......this should have been a Kinks tune!!! Great song!!!

  • he throws a few bars of Day Tripper in there at the beginning...love it.

  • dire straits - industrial disease

  • I think this is the best Dire Straits song lyrically.

  • they enjoy playing very much

  • brilliant songwriter for the ages they should induct him into the rock and roll hall of fame to bad the hall is a crap stain that inducts bands like metallica and u2 geez what is this world coming to

  • @Cros451 For their overall body of work, Metallica and U2 put out a plethora of GREAT music, unlike Dire Straits. I agree that the Hall of Fame is otherwise a joke, but you sound rather foolish dumping on two bands.

  • @4thandinches Metallica...lmao

  • @Rpaulie53 and at the end to

  • Rocked me when i was a young boy..........Still rockin me now.

  • @donison1968 I regret every single day of my life being born in the 90's

Holy fuck I wished i have seen this kind of musical movement happening. Lucky you guys.

  • Dire Straits 4 LIFE! Man, they kick ass and bring the whole house down!!! I'd give my right arm to see them in concert...

  • i was there,drunk .' stoned........woooofukinwoo, lol

  • LMFAO!!!.....

  • i think you still are stoned and drunk lol

  • he plays with no effort at all.... i like fripp page summers marr...clapton...hendrix gilmore and slash and van halen.....but this guy please with such ease.....king of kool..makes it look easy..

    knopfler is king

  • @mattmoogstar Well put. Especially impressed that you threw Summers and Marr in amidst the crotch-rockers ;)

  • EXCELLENT CONCERT!

    MUST SEE!

  • DANKO TOP GUN

  • he totally quotes the riff from "Day Tripper"

    at 5:23.

  • and in the beginning

  • I've never seen or heard a version of this live... have seen him four times in concert, and heard many recordings of his. Thanks for posting....

  • Don't you love the brewers drip line? I don't drink beer---but it's one of the best lines ever!

  • Brewer's DROOP

    Big hanging -down dewlaps

Tom in Utica--Home of SARANAC! and Utica C.lub !

  • I don't know how you came to get that Bette Davis wheeze - but worst of all, young man, you have INDUSTRIAL DISEASE!! (my favorite line)

  • In my opinion, Knopfler's lyrics and Waters'lyrics are similar and both fantastic ! ! !

  • agreed

    Dire Straits and Pink Floyd>All

  • Goodness me could it be venerial disease

  • AS good as PInknFLOYD

  • Mark Knopfler on a world tour starting this month. Incrdible if you haven't seen him. He'll be touring in support of his new album GETLUCKY!

  • Mark Knopfler on tour starting this month!

  • Dire Straits simply the best...

  • why does he leave out saying betty davis in the 3rd verse?

  • i like the daytripper part in the begging such atribute

  • Happy Birthday Mark, you'r said it greatly ....

  • better then the best a legend a heros a

    knopfler

  • Two men say they're Jesus, one of them is wrong!!!! lol xD

  • How come the video never shows the bassist or the drummer?

  • Yes, it is a shame, not showing their great drummer...

I prefer the Wembley Arena concert in 85.

  • @ 3:55 to 4:07, the dude on Knoffler's right playing the Fender Jazz is the bass player.

  • weird aint it? it makes up for it a bit with lots of jack sonni looking awesome

  • Fucking best band ever ingenious lyrics

  • I love the lyrics of this song and everybody knows that Knopfler is a finger-picking genius on guitar. I was mad when this song was on the set list of the 91-92 tour.

  • Speakers corner sucks xD

  • Hey, don't you hear it at 3.18 - 3.20???

    That's not my opinion^^

  • ohohoh nice the Beatles "intrusion" (Day Tripper) in the intro :-)

  • i hear it its only for 2 sec r so

  • In the intro? I hear it at 524....

  • I remember listening to Dire Straits back in the late 80's when i was about 9 or 10, i'd have my portable cassette player maxed out volume wise, and my sony headphones on as i cycled around, i was in awe of their music. 20 years down the line and they are still the greatest band i've ever known. Some of my best memories of music is from them, THANKYOU Dire Straits!!!!

  • @urbanfireblade I totally agree!! I was a teen in the 80's, loved every minute of it. We grew up with the best music EVER!!!!!

  • @urbanfireblade Reading that makes me cry but in a good way. Thanks mate :)

  • I could wish I were that good playing guitar.

  • Excellent recording. Yes it is on Love Over Gold which was released in 1983. What a band!

  • You can get this song on the "Love Over Gold" album. I love this song so crazy but so awesome!!!

  • there's a bit of 'walk of life' in the song

  • can someone please tell me which album this song can be found, thanks

  • Love Over Gold

  • thank you.

  • beautyful song!

  • Has anyone noticed the "day tripper" beatles theme at 0.44 and 5.24? It fits nice.... Mater Mark!!!!

  • i certainly have!

  • Same organ part as "California Sun" by the Rivieras? To me it sounds pretty much the same! Never heard this song before, great lyrics, like it!!!

  • dig mark's funky trousers!

  • Great lyrics!!!

  • this rocks man !!! dure straits were the bizz :)

  • Ok..Bartoline..Beverley, E Yorks..rock on!

  • Yeah well...since I smashed up my right leg and my hair dropped out I am kinda in slo mo..way it is..this reminds me of a foreman in a chemical producer in E Yorks UK..the warehouse stank of organic chemicals..his face was etched with dilated capillaries..what can ya do..?

  • the greatest dire straits song of all time remember singing this at work our foremans name was billy used to love yelling out billy.s got fleas lol

  • funny about the fleas...lol. I think it's skateaway as the greatest song though but I understand where you are coming from. Dire Straits is probably the most underrated band ever.

  • Two men say they're Jesus, one of them's gotta be wrong....

  • 2 jesuses (jesi?) - it's a miracle!

  • Yeah, 2 jesuses... one of them is Mark, the other is the fake one!

  • This is from 23 years ago, of course he's a bit less active. Wouldn't of said dreary thought, he's still more than a benchmark!! (pun intended)

  • well, I think he´s never been too vital, heh, its kind of his own style, always calmed, never forcing his voice and bla bla...

And I think its great, love it

  • Dire Straits at the top of their game......

  • exellent!!!!inmortality song.

  • indémodable = French for : will never be old fashioned.

  • it`s jack sonny.

    incredible lyrics.

  • i thought it was hal lindes! where did he come in to it

  • he joined before the bia lp

  • didnt hal do the original recording though?

  • Yes hal was on the album recording but jack sonnie was on the 1985/6 brothers in arms tour.

  • i think hal was the one who did the talkbox style intro in the recording

  • waw mark le geni de la guitare

  • 'History boils over theres an economics freeze' yes, again in 2008 : )

  • Dire Straits had great lirics!

  • great vid...thanks!

    Most under-rated DS song ever.

  • Chalk it down!

  • spooky :D intro
