I heard this on the radio today, driving on a lonely highway; I hadn't heard it since I was a teenager. I listened closely to the lyrics, and heard the title of the song in the chorus, remembered it, typed it into the search engine, and listened to this awesome song...
I thought to myself THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE. I can listen to almost any song anytime I want.
Not wanting to start anything but perhaps you could cut these folks a little slack. With Gaga and Beiber (and little else) being constantly shoved down their throats, they probably enjoy being "in the know" on some bands and music their peers aren't generally privy to.
Damn good Dire Straits song! More people need to understand that Dire Straits was more than Money for Nothing and Sultan of Swing. They have numerous great tunes.
I like this playing of it a lot more than the one on album. I really like the guitar part, it's creepy and cool! I'm a 16 yr. old male and in Grade 10 and I like older music like this!
@InterestPossession im a 17 year old girl, from a town were no-one knows of this sort of music, and this stuff is the greatest thing i have ever heard, my dad used to listen to it all the time, we still have the vinyls :D
Its good to know that there are other younger people into this too
Jack Sonni on rhythm guitar looks like he's having just too much fun! He's like that all the time on stage though. That there is a man who loves his job. Then again, if I had a chance to play next to Mark Knopfler on stage, I'd be pretty stoked about it too.
After reading all these comments all I have to say is I don"t care if MK is bald and wears a headband, funkypants, no pants or pink pants. I don't care if he's young, old, fat or skinny, a man that can play like that can run his long beautiful fingers over me anytime. His music is orgasmic especially Lady Writer!!!!!!
@klotzstang In 1986 it was receding--In 2010 it's BALD--But MK is a great guitar player and a very bright person. Thru the years he has brought me much pleasure!
0:45 he plays the riff to Day Tripper by The Beatles. He did a lot of this on this tour. In one version of Tunnel of Love he plays the riff to Ghost Riders in the Sky.
@richie2007100 You no longer liking it doesn't make it rubbish, as ever with mark, if you really want to hear how it's supposed to sound you have to see him live. What's changed is how he writes songs, basically sitting in the house with an acoustic, he was getting bored of how everything DS had to be big loud stadioum stuff, then while on tour a couple of guitars got pinched and he kinda turned his back on the big gig deal
One of the most prophetic songs I know. I had know Idea what he was on about back then. Look at Great Britain now. Seems I was told as a wee lad in the states in the early 60's on how the Bobbys never carried a gun. Cor.
brilliant songwriter for the ages they should induct him into the rock and roll hall of fame to bad the hall is a crap stain that inducts bands like metallica and u2 geez what is this world coming to
@Cros451 For their overall body of work, Metallica and U2 put out a plethora of GREAT music, unlike Dire Straits. I agree that the Hall of Fame is otherwise a joke, but you sound rather foolish dumping on two bands.
he plays with no effort at all.... i like fripp page summers marr...clapton...hendrix gilmore and slash and van halen.....but this guy please with such ease.....king of kool..makes it look easy..
I love the lyrics of this song and everybody knows that Knopfler is a finger-picking genius on guitar. I was mad when this song was on the set list of the 91-92 tour.
I remember listening to Dire Straits back in the late 80's when i was about 9 or 10, i'd have my portable cassette player maxed out volume wise, and my sony headphones on as i cycled around, i was in awe of their music. 20 years down the line and they are still the greatest band i've ever known. Some of my best memories of music is from them, THANKYOU Dire Straits!!!!
Yeah well...since I smashed up my right leg and my hair dropped out I am kinda in slo mo..way it is..this reminds me of a foreman in a chemical producer in E Yorks UK..the warehouse stank of organic chemicals..his face was etched with dilated capillaries..what can ya do..?
funny about the fleas...lol. I think it's skateaway as the greatest song though but I understand where you are coming from. Dire Straits is probably the most underrated band ever.
What a fantastic live version of this song - one of the best that Mark Knopfler has ever written. A pity that it has never made it to a live record/cd
