I'm thinking it was a ploy by the bands management - to try to recapture some of The Sweet's market- the bands had the same management ( Chinn and Chapman)  The Sweet were hugely popular a few years before Smokie...great band!

@englishsandy,cool..I actually spent most of my life in the industry- check out my youtube posts if you wish!......I think both bands are FANTASTIC..hugely talented and underrated...they had a similar image,,The Sweet were huge in the early 70's..started 'glam rock' ...Then lost success when they managed themselves and became heavier -hard rock...they were the wild, wild angels...Their singer Brian got injured in a fight (throat) and was never the same after that...more next time!

@wonenergy The Sweet undoubtedly influenced Bands like Def Leppard , Motley crue...even Kiss ..and definitely Smokie

.Smokie came out a few years later and were similar in that all four members sang vocals and were really talented .Apart from having a similar image (all good looking)and same management initially) .the bands however were really different..Smokie were much easier listening less crash bang...brilliant

Playback, like all others of Smokie's '70's performances. The strange thing is that they started to play live before Chris left Smokie, 'cos in their 1980-1986 perfomances, they played live. They also played (very rarely) live at concerts sometimes in the period 1975-1979.

They played live all through the early 60's/70's and 80's and still play live now including Chris. The reason they are lip syncing on these are because it was the done thing on TV shows back then like it still is now for a lot of shows.
